Book excerpt: Ports are a vital part of the global economy, connecting the world through maritime transport networks, promoting international trade, and supporting global economic growth. However, port communities are increasingly concerned about the local environmental problems associated with air pollution from increased port activities. Efforts are increasingly being made into the reduction of human-induced changes to the global environment, and one of the target areas is to reduce air emissions from international shipping. It appears that management of the port sector has entered into a new era, not only because environmental concerns are increasingly being expressed surrounding the ports themselves, but also because many of the new environmental measures associated with the shipping trade have to be enforced when ships are in port. Ports and the Environment assembles research focusing on the management of ports, and the environmental issues associated with both the shipping trade and the ports themselves. By examining contemporary concerns from the perspectives of maritime policy, port management, and industrial efficiency, this book will be provide important reference for future research and policy-making in this area. This book was originally published as a special issue of Maritime Policy & Management.

Book excerpt: The future safety of maritime transportation in the United States-a major factor in the nation's international trade and economic well-being-will depend heavily on the quality of port and waterways information systems. Many U.S. ports and waterways lack adequate information services, although certain elements of advanced systems are now available in some locations. Barriers to improvements in information systems include the division of responsibilities for waterways management among multiple agencies at all levels of government, a lack of coordination among the federal agencies responsible for waterways management, inadequate budgets for some critical maritime programs, the high costs of some specialized technologies, stakeholder opposition to user fees, limited access to certain key data, the incompatibility of many independently developed systems, and the absence of standards for some attractive technologies. In this report, the second phase of a three-year study by the Committee on Maritime Advanced Information Systems of the National Research Council, a strategy is presented for overcoming the major barriers and deficiencies and providing a minimum level of maritime safety information nationwide. In this phase of the study, the committee concentrated on maritime information systems that promote safety, which is the area of greatest need. The committee did not examine in detail the relationship between navigation safety and maritime transportation efficiency or evaluate information systems that promote efficiency; the committee believes, however, that these issues deserve further attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive introduction to the issues surrounding the use of the marine environment, the contribution of the maritime sector, specifically shipping and ports, to global environmental impacts is explored in depth. Using an ecosystem-based approach, the author reviews these impacts and considers their relative significance. The book begins with a broad overview of the marine and coastal environment, including ecological, social, political and legal aspects of its resources and its uses. It presents the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of environmental management as a means of mitigating or adapting to environmental impacts, placing it in the context of the maritime industry. The author proceeds to explore the environmental impacts of the maritime industry in detail, with in-depth treatments of the shipping and ports sectors. The book then outlines a range of practical tools employed in maritime environmental management such as risk assessment, impact assessment and environmental accounting. It describes the nature and role of relevant organisations, both national and international, and includes the latest regulations and agreements as well as highlighting a range of corporate responses such as management systems and corporate sustainability reporting. Effective marine management and responsible use of the marine environment by the maritime sector is increasingly demanded by society. This book considers the success of current systems in place, including the questions of value and specific mechanisms of funding. Finally, a horizon scanning view of marine and maritime environmental management summarises possible future developments and scenarios facing the maritime world.

Book excerpt: While efficient ports are vital to the economic development of their surrounding areas, the related ship traffic, the handling of the goods in the ports and the hinterland distribution can cause a number of negative environmental impacts. This book examines the environmental impacts of international maritime transport, and looks more in detail at the impacts stemming from near-port shipping activities, the handling of the goods in the ports and from the distribution of the goods to the surrounding regions. It focuses on five ports: Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, the United States; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Port Metro Vancouver, Canada; and Busan, Korea. The book provides examples of the environmental problems related to port activities (such as air pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases, water pollution, noise, spread of invasive species, etc.) and highlights a number of different policy instruments that can be used to limit the negative impacts. It is a valuable resource for policy makers and researchers alike. Further reading Globalisation, Transport and the Environment (2010)
