Both are very toxic to aquatic organisms. Consequently, their presence may bias dredged material toxicity bioassays that are designed to evaluate the toxicity of persistent contaminants such as heavy metals and petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The purpose of this technical note is to summarize published information on sediment pore water ammonia and sulfide concentrations that occur in situ. In a subsequent technical note, this exposure information will be coupled with ammonia and sulfide toxicity data to estimate the potential influence of these constituents on dredged material toxicity bioassays.

Book excerpt: During spring 1977, water was sampled in the Grand River, which runs through the State of Michigan, to estimate the increased loads of polluting and enriching substances caused by dredging the river channel near its mouth at Lake Michigan. Results indicate that sedimentary material disturbed during the dredging process is carries out to the lake. On an annual basis, the increase in loading is approximately 1 percent for all variables measured; however, during the period of dredging (about 1 week), the increases are approximately 30 percent. The effects of these events on the nearshore ecology are not known at present.

Book excerpt: Natural processes in aquatic ecosystmes tend to concentrate heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, pesticides, nutrients, and oil and grease compounds in bottom sediments. These contaminants are not very soluble in water under the conidtions that normally occur in oxygenated uncontaminated surface waters. Therefore, introducing high concentrations of these contaminants into aquatic ecosystems will generally result in an equilibrium condition where most of the contaminant will be sorbed (adsorbed and absorbed) by suspended particulate material and then deposited on the bottom when the suspended material settles. The time necessary to achieve the equilibrium condition depends upon the physicochemical conditions in the aquatic system and the quantity and duration of the contaminant introduction. Dredged Material Research Program (DMRP) reports and other literature indicate that dredging operations have the potential to temporarily mobilize or release some contaminants from the sediments. During disposal operations, the anaerobic sediments are mixed with aerated surface water, and a complex chemical interaction occurs. Heavy metals, such as cadmium, copper, chromium, lead, and zinc, are stabilized in the oxygen-free sediments as insoluble sulfides.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is authorized to develop and implement sediment quality criteria (SQC) under Section 304(a) of the Clean Water Act. Under this authority the EPA is proceeding with development of SQC for nonpolar organic compounds and metals. A major assumption in the current approach to SQC is that truly dissolved concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in sediment pore water can be computed by assuming that K(sub DOC) (partition coefficient normalized to colloidal plus dissolved organic carbon, DOC) equals K(sub OC) (partition coefficient for sediment organic carbon). jg p.1.
