Book excerpt: Considering the current state of global environmental issues, the construction industry is expected to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by establishing environmental design systems for concrete structures and by developing the necessary technologies. The goal of sustainable environmental design is to reduce impacts on nature, society and humans by evaluating and verifying the environmental performance of the design. Environmental performance can be evaluated using indices such as resources, waste, energy, emission, etc. The necessary performance requirements for the verification of environmental performance are determined based on legislative regulations or on the particular objectives of specifiers, designers or owners. The purpose of fib Bulletin 47 is to provide the principles and procedures for designing concrete structures that integrate environmental aspects. It establishes general principles concerning the integration of environmental impacts in the design, construction, use, maintenance/ management, demolition, disposal and reuse after demolition of a concrete structure. Although the operation of buildings consumes the greatest energy through heating and cooling equipment, this is not covered in Bulletin 47, nor are the environmental impacts related to land use and general ecological systems. This report is applicable to both new and existing concrete structures.

However, due to the high production of concrete, the final negative environmental impact of concrete structures is significant. Any improvement of concrete design principles, methodologies of assessment, construction and demolition technologies, and management of operation and use of concrete structures thus provides a very significant contribution to the general goal: the achievement of a development process in the sustainable way. The objective of this state-of-art report is provide the framework of so-called environmental design, to document "Best Available Technology" (BAT) for concrete structures from an environmental point of view and to summarize methodologies for environmental impact evaluation and optimization of concrete structures. Although the authors of the report were from Europe and Japan, it was attempted to collect information as widely as possible.

The aim was to set up basic methodology to be helpful in development of design and assessment tools focused on sustainability of concrete structure within the whole life cycle. Integrated Life Cycle Assessment (ILCA) represents an advanced approach integrating different aspects of sustainability in one complex assessment procedure. The integrated approach is necessary to insure that the structure will serve during the whole expected service life with a maximum functional quality and safety, while environmental and economic loads will be kept at a low level. The effective application and quality of results are dependent on the availability of relevant input data obtained using a detailed inventory analysis, based on specific regional conditions. The evaluation of the real level of total quality of concrete structure should be based on a detailed ILCA analysis using regionally or locally relevant data sets.
