Book excerpt: Data were collected during the winter and spring of 1979 at Morristown, Chimney Bay and Tibbits Creek, to determine the character of the St. Lawrence River fisheries in these areas. Species abundance and distribution were found to vary by location, time of year and depth of sampling. The number of species of fish collected in gill nets were generally greater in shallow water as compared with deep water stations. Increased adult species abundance and diversity during the spring, relative to the winter, probably reflected increased fish movement associated with spawning and feeding. Ichthyoplankton abundance and species increased progressively throughout the spring. Mean lengths at age for northern pike and yellow perch generally indicated the existence of sexually dimorphic growth. Feeding appeared to be an important activity northern pike and yellow perch during both winter and spring, as evidenced by stomach content analyses. (FR).

Book excerpt: The FY 1979 Navigation Season Extension Demonstration Program was part of an on-going program to determine the practicability of permanently extending the Seaway navigation season on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway System. As part of the program, the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. proposed to modify existing ice booms at Ogdensburg-Prescott and Galop Island in the St. Lawrence River and conduct a limited number of vessel transits in a demonstration corridor. The purpose of the proposed tests was to demonstrate the feasibility of navigating through ice booms while maintaining the stability of the ice cover and the hydraulic integrity of the river. This present report appraises a study entitled 'Environmental Assessment of the FY 1979 Winter Navigation Demonstration on the St. Lawrence River', prepared by the New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Their report comprised a summary volume and two volumes of technical reports. The present report concludes that :1) although the summary volume purports to summarize the 15 technical reports, it makes conclusions in many cases based on unsubstantiated and often erroneous interpretation rather than on facts presented in the technical reports which it was to summarize; and 2) much of the environmental assessment strays to discuss aspects of an operational extension of the season and its impacts on the 120-mile international portion of the St. Lawrence River, rather than addressing the proposed ice boom demonstration with one vessel in a 15 to 20 mile demonstration corridor. Book excerpt: Although aerial ice reconnaissance and aerial photomapping of the St. Lawrence River during winter have been carried out for a number of years, little attention has been directed to pools as a winter habitat for birds. These studies are a first attempt at describing those pools. On the basis of pool characteristics, the section of the St. Lawrence River influenced by possible demonstration voyages was classified into five glaciological reaches. These are: 1) Brockville Narrows, 2) Morristown Point to Ogdensburg, 3) Ogdensburg Ice Boom, 4) Galop Island Ice Boom, and 5) Iroquois Dam. The pools have three principle origins. One is upwelling currents, caused by deep rough, river bed conditions, as well as by the presence of islands and shoals in deep shallower areas. Another is currents; where currents were approximately 3.0 to 5.0 ft/sec, pools were found. Lastly is the placement of engineering structures, e.g., ice booms and dams.
