It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book excerpt: Corrosion fatigue is a generic term that is used to describe the phenomenon of cracking (including environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth) in materials under the combined actions of an applied cyclic stress and a corrosive (aggressive) environment. Quantitative characterization and understanding have been hampered by the complexity of the problem, difficulties in separating the effects associated with crack initiation and crack growth, and by the absence of a truly interdisciplinary attack of the problem. With the development of fracture mechanics technology and sophisticated techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction analysis, quantification of environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth has now been placed on a reasonably firm basis in terms of both steady-state and transient responses. Understanding of the chemical processes that control environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth is beginning to emerge from coordinated mechanical, metallurgical, and chemical studies. A fundamental approach that underlies these studies and recent progress using this approach are described. Areas and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors present current research in the study of the mechanisms, behaviour and analysis of fatigue crack growths. Topics discussed in this compilation include the unified fatigue crack growth rate model; practical tools for statistical fatigue design; probablistic algorithms performance evaluation and application in multi-fractured structures; three dimensional effects in the fracture mechanics of bi-dimensional specimens; fatigue crack propagation mechanism in porous open pore metal foams; lifetime predictions for short fatigue crack's initiation-propagation by basic mechanical properties; variable amplitude fatigue crack growth in selected aluminium alloys; fatigue threshold R-curves for analysis of short fatigue cracks; and multiaxial fatigue life prediction for lateral notched round bars made of high strength steel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accumulation of damage and the development of fatigue cracks under the influence of loads is a common phenomenon that occurs in metals. To slow down crack growth and ensure an adequate level of safety and the optimal durability of structural elements, experimental tests and simulations are required to determine the influence of various factors. Such factors include, among others, the impact of microstructures, voids, notches, the environment, etc. Research carried out in this field and the results obtained are necessary to guide development toward the receipt of new and advanced materials that meet the requirements of the designers. This Special Issue aims to provide the data, models and tools necessary to provide structural integrity and perform lifetime prediction based on the stress (strain) state and, finally, the increase in fatigue cracks in the material.
