Book Synopsis Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place by : National Research Council
Download or read book Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of the U.S. decennial census depends critically on the accuracy with which individual people are counted in specific housing units, at precise geographic locations. The 2000 and other recent censuses have relied on a set of residence rules to craft instructions on the census questionnaire in order to guide respondents to identify their correct "usual residence." Determining the proper place to count such groups as college students, prisoners, and military personnel has always been complicated and controversial; major societal trends such as placement of children in shared custody arrangements and the prevalence of "snowbird" and "sunbird" populations who regularly move to favorable climates further make it difficult to specify ties to one household and one place. Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place reviews the evolution of current residence rules and the way residence concepts are presented to respondents. It proposes major changes to the basic approach of collecting residence information and suggests a program of research to improve the 2010 and future censuses.

Download or read book Growing Up Alone written by Maggie Black and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child attaches key importance to the family¿s role in nurturing & raising the child. The child¿s interests are best served by staying with the family, even in times of war or misfortune, unless the home is abusive. Despite this widely accepted principle, increasing numbers of children are growing up alone. The cause of this epidemic is the acute poverty endured by millions of families in Africa, Asia, Latin Amer. & Central & Eastern Europe -- reinforced by causes such as warfare & the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Contents: What is the scale of the problem?; Experiencing growing up alone; Bolstering families; Programs for family well-being; Speaking out for children growing up alone; & A UK agenda for action. Book Synopsis Domestic Net Migration in the U. S. by : Marc J. Perry
Download or read book Domestic Net Migration in the U. S. written by Marc J. Perry and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is playing a larger role in population redistribution within the U.S. With birth & death rates currently low & largely similar across the country, natural increase (the excess of births over deaths) exerts less influence than it used to in explaining why some regions, states, or counties have faster population growth than others. This report describes recent patterns of population redistribution reflected in the domestic net migration component of population estimates data. Analysis focuses on net migration for a number of different kinds of geographic areas, including regions, divisions, states, metropolitan & micropolitan statistical areas, & counties. Charts & tables.

Book Synopsis Extracting Electron Densities in N-Type Gaas from Raman Spectra: Theory by : Herbert S. Bennett
Download or read book Extracting Electron Densities in N-Type Gaas from Raman Spectra: Theory written by Herbert S. Bennett and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the theory for calculating Raman line shapes as functions of the Fermi energy and finite temperatures in zinc blende, n-type GaAs for donor densities between 10 to the 16th cm -3 and 10 to the 19th cm -3. Compared to other theories, this theory is unique in two respects: (1) the many-body effects are treated self-consistently; and (2) the theory is valid at room temperature for arbitrary values of the ratio R = (Q to the 2nd/alpha), where Q is the magnitude of the normalization wave vector and alpha is the normalized frequency used in the Raman measurements. These calculations solve the charge neutrality equation self-consistently for a two-band model of GaAs at 300 K that includes the effects of high carrier concentrations and dopant densities on the perturbed densities of states used to calculate the Fermi energy as a function of temperature. This article discusses the establishment by the U.N. of the Internat. Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (1990-2000) & its primary goal -- to devise strategies to reduce loss of life, property damage, & social & economic disruption from natural hazards. Photos.
