Book excerpt: In To Be an Entrepreneur, Julia Qermezi Huang focuses on Bangladesh's iAgent social-enterprise model, the set of economic processes that animate the delivery of this model, and the implications for women's empowerment. The book offers new ethnographic approaches that reincorporate relational economics into the study of social enterprise. It details the tactics, dilemmas, compromises, aspirations, and unexpected possibilities that digital social enterprise opens up for women entrepreneurs, and reveals the implications of policy models promoting women's empowerment: the failure of focusing on individual autonomy and independence. While describing the historical and incomplete transition of Bangladesh's development models from their roots in a patronage-based moral economy to a market-based social-enterprise arrangement, Huang concludes that market-driven interventions fail to grasp the sociopolitical and cultural contexts in which poverty and gender inequality are embedded and sustained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of small entrepreneurship in a developing country like Bangladesh has paramount importance in socioeconomic development of the country. The reasons can be attributed by the balanced growth and the inclusion of general masses in the development process of the country. However, this development process is hindered by a number of unfavorable factors which are primarily concerned with personal, economic, social, environmental, political, and legal in nature. Access to the resources of the small entrepreneurs of the country should be ensured to initiate and run the small business in Bangladesh. Hence, this paper aims at exploring the factors that hinder the development of small business entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. This study follows both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Two hundred ten small entrepreneurs in different business sectors of Bangladesh such as, food processing, rice farming, freight forwarding, tea production, barbing salon, water refill station, grocery business, fish selling, cattle farming, etc. were interviewed with a structured questionnaire. Factor analysis was conducted to identify the factors impede the small entrepreneurial businesses in Bangladesh. Regression analysis was carried out to examine the relationships between the hindering factors and the overall development of small business entrepreneurship in Bangladesh. The results show that the lack of local support for starting and running business, lack of knowledge on information technology, lack of business experience, and lack of entrepreneurship training are important factors or barriers for the development of small entrepreneurial businesses in Bangladesh. This study suggests that the policy makers should focus more on stimulatory, supporting and sustaining activities to develop small business entrepreneurship in Bangladesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assess the roles of entrepreneurship and social innovation for socio-cultural changes. It also evaluates farmers’ performance in disaster risk management at a community level toward sustainable regional development in a rural haor region of Bangladesh. To achieve the purpose of the research, both a qualitative method (Trajectory Equifinality Modeling, TEM) and a quantitative method (Structural Equation Modeling, SEM) are introduced, based on the results of case studies on local entrepreneurs, interview and focus group discussions with stakeholders, and questionnaire surveys of farm households. First, the results clarify that social capital is critically important both for male and female entrepreneurs in the haor region, and that education is more important to women for empowerment and technology adoption in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the haor region of Bangladesh. In addition, it makes clear that the Common Interest Group approach plays a role for women’s empowerment in the target region. Furthermore, it identifies the multi-causal relationships among the factors affecting farm households’ performance in disaster risk management at the community level. This book helps readers to understand regional development through social and cultural transformation in a rural community where poverty and gender discrimination are path-dependent problems.

It explores the historical, economic, social and political impacts of trade and commerce in this region to give insight into how it has learned the lessons of failure from the past and is poised to capitalize on them. Bangladesh is considered an Emerging Tiger as one of the fastest-growing economies in South Asia, having witnessed exponential growth in exports. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is still recovering from its civil war and FDI makes up a very small percentage of its GDP. Nevertheless, it also represents a unique opportunity for investors looking to do business in this growing region. Identifying the key drivers of South Asian economic growth and development, this book is aimed at scholars who seek to learn more about what must be done to take advantage of the opportunities in both countries to move into the future.

Book excerpt: The major objective of this book is to introduce social business models to face the challenge of social issues in emerging countries. Each chapter clarifies business strategies based on diligent field surveys in developing nations, focusing on Bangladesh and the Philippines, where social issues in the age of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are concentrated. The field surveys enable the effective construction of a sophisticated hybrid value chain by connecting a sustainable business ecosystem of local value chains with global value chains. Joint social business entities formed between local NGOs and foreign companies, multinational corporations with global value chains, among others, appear to be the keystones. In Part I, the case of Grameen Euglena in Bangladesh and that of Sari-Sari stores leveraging micro-financing in the Philippines, along with other interesting cases, are analyzed as effective social business models. Analysis also shows that the IT service industry in emerging countries helps to enlarge formal sectors so as to absorb younger generations into informal sectors. The e-health service business in Bangladesh and the business process outsourcing (BPO) IT service industry in the Philippines are examined in each part of the book. Part II, particularly, shows that IT and the digital technology-based service industry can lead to a new industrial development path in these countries instead of the conventional one based on manufacturing. In other words, digital technology-based service industries, as formal sectors, can absorb working people from informal sectors. As a result, poverty issues which form a key issue in SDGS will be alleviated. This book is highly recommended not only to academicians but also to businesspeople who seek an in-depth and up-to-date overview of new sustainable and inclusive businesses in the age of SDGs.
