The importance of the human, economic and social issues caused by the question of generations’ solidarities led the International Society of Family Law to choose this theme for its XVIth World Congress (Lyon, July 19-23rd 2011). More than 200 speakers from 50 countries studied these questions from the legal angle, but also philosophic, economic and anthropological. This work collects a part of these papers about two great issues: the child, as the center of family solidarities; and the support for elders by family. Phenomena such as increasing life expectancy, population urbanization, labor-market entry barriers, decline of traditional family patterns, mark in depth our contemporary world and involve old solidarity disappearance and new solidarity emergence, reshaping relations between generations while bringing up the problem of the fate of the most vulnerable: children, the sick, disabled, and especially elderly people. – What then is the role of families and communities in protecting these people? – What is the relationship between public and private solidarity? – What are the rights and freedoms of people placed by age, illness or disability in a dependence situation? These are the issues addressed by the authors of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In FELICIE, the focus is on the health of the elderly, and on the resources at their disposal to cope with the severe impairments liable to affect their quality of life. Not only personal resources - economic well-being and educational attainment - but also the potential support of close kin, i.e. their partner, of course, and their children, if available. This leads to the more specific question of care. One major conclusion of the FELICIE study is that the disabled older adults of the future will fare better, on average, than those of today, both on a personal level, thanks to higher levels of education, and on a social level, thanks to the more frequent presence of their spouse and, at least potentially, their children. The conclusions are based on the experience of nine countries across Europe (north: Finland, Netherlands; west: Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom; south: Italy, Portugal; east: Czech Republic). In terms of both demographic and social indicators, the participating countries are fairly representative of their region."--Publisher.

Book excerpt: This authoritative collection sets out the critical role and application of evaluation in identifying and developing good practice in a range of dementia care settings. The contributors discuss the evaluation of care at different levels and in various settings, particularly long stay care, covering evaluation methods, ethics, use of technology and the user's role in the evaluation process itself. Their contributions on evaluating aspects of dementia care ranging from life story work and environmental considerations to medication and dementia care mapping is a useful basis for the discussion of future challenges in evaluation of dementia care. Practical and theoretical, this wide-ranging text is essential reading for dementia care practitioners at all levels, as well as students and researchers interested in dementia care practice.

Book excerpt: As a focus for academic and professional study, dementia has moved rapidly from the margin to the mainstream during the last decade. Understanding of this distressing condition, its aetiology and recognition, has become much more widespread and sophisticated. Building on such clinical knowledge, this book challenges the reader - to think ethically and in a person-centred way about the implications of dementia at a personal, planning and service provision level - to consider consumer perspectives, not only those of carers but also the much neglected views of individuals with dementia - to explore less well documented areas such as dementia and Down's Syndrome, depression and early onset dementia. In conclusion, the book illuminates selected topical developments in service provision such as community care, advocacy and aspects of the built and social care environment.

Book excerpt: This book offers a new critical framework for understanding the processes of politicising and gendering care for older people and their manifestations in several European contexts. It interrogates how care for older adults varies across time and place while searching for an in-depth comprehension of how it becomes an arena of political struggle and the object of public policy in different countries and at various societal and political levels. It brings together multidisciplinary contributions that examine the issue of care for older people as a political concern from many angles, such as problematising care needs, long-term care policies, home care services, institutional services and family care. The contributions reveal the diversity of situations in which the processes of politicising and gendering care for older adults overlap, contradict or reinforce each other while leading to increased gender (in)equalities on different levels.

Originally focusing on higher education institutions, the research themes have over the years been extended to the health sector, local government, tourism, logistics, banking services. Around a hundred delegates from about twenty different countries participate each year and nearly one thousand research papers have been published over the last ten years, making of the conference one of the major events in the field of quality in services.
