Since Jiménez’s lyrical output covers the poetic tradition from Romanticism through Symbolism to the Avant-Gardes, his work can be regarded as a condensation of the modern paradigm. Julio Jensen investigates the lyrical subject appearing in Jiménez’s poetry as exemplary of the notion of modern subjectivity. He does so by assuming a historical correlation between literature and philosophy in the sense that if philosophical discourse conceptualizes the prevailing understanding of the human being at a given moment, literary discourse represents it. Modern thought does not accept any other foundation than subjectivity. At the same time, the awareness of the subject’s finitude engenders pessimism with respect to its status as world-generating principle. One of the primary aims of this study, then, is to show how Jiménez poignantly enacts this vacillation between self-enthronement and self-eradication. With insightful readings of Jiménez’s poetry, the author opens a rich vein in the work of a writer who would serve as a central reference for later Spanish-language poets such as Federico Garcá Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.

Más de uno, en alguna ocasión me ha propuesto publicarlas, compartirlas de una manera más amplia, y es lo que hago ahora, impulsado fundamentalmente por mi esposa. Las poesías las he agrupado por el tipo de sentimiento que las motivó, o los momentos personales, y estados de ánimo, que las provocaron. En cada grupo aparecen en el orden temporal en que fueron escritas. Momentos de "Imposibles" hay siempre en la vida de cualquiera: deseos que son irrealizables por una u otra circunstancia, y de muy variados tipos. Los Momentos de "Ensueños" reflejan las ilusiones de mi etapa adolescente. "Ansiedades" están ligadas a algún tipo de angustia, llevaderas unas, asfixiantes otras. "Añoranzas" se producen al recordar momentos que dieron felicidad. Momentos de "Familia" se corresponden con recuerdos familiares. "Reflexiones" resultan de los momentos en que hacemos un poco de filosofía personal. "Variedades" son poesías circunstanciales que no encajan en los grupos anteriores. "Dicha", al ver la que tengo en mi recta final y en lo que está por venir.

Book excerpt: La mirada de Aquiles es un libro que recoge, describe y analiza el gran acorde que representa la poética de Robert Lowell en la coyuntura de la literatura norteamericana contemporánea. Así concentramos nuestra mirada sobre la secuencia poética de Life Studies (1959), que interpretamos como epicentro irradiador del sistema imaginario de este poeta. Una secuencia que también supuso un punto de inflexión en la vida pública desde una yoidad que impulsó su universo íntimo y profundamente elegíaco hacia el exterior. Desde aquí se procede a profundizar en For the Union Dead (1964), para reflexionar sobre lo que denominamos como conflictividad axiológica estructural inherente al sistema imaginario de Lowell. Desde esta perspectiva se parte de la edición norteamericana que incluye ambas secuencias poéticas y que contiene la importante sección en prosa titulada '91 Revere Street'. La profundización en estas dos secuencias líricas implica la revisión previa de un mapa de relecturas que afecta no sólo a la obra anterior de Lowell sino a toda la modulación de su sistema imaginario desde su temprana etapa creativa. Es un camino hacia y desde el mito buscando llenar el vacío de las crisis religiosas tanto del propio Lowell como del pensamiento occidental, tal como indica George Steiner. El poeta accede a Aquiles como referente. Así, desde la asimilación del mito construye su cosmovisión a partir de la palabra poética.
