Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the diagnosis of irreversible destruction of both forests and their biodiversity actually mask a wide range of patterns? Based on the results of natural and social scientists, this book attempts to answer fundamental questions such as: what is deforestation and how do we mesure it? What changes result from deforestation and how do human societies manage these changes? It explores the many and varied aspects of deforestation, a process whose effects are not always as negative as perceived.

Book excerpt: This study explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia and rejects the exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness'. This study, charting the construction of a Catalan identity from the nineteenth-century cultural renaissance until the present day, explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia. Drawing on postcolonial and multicultural literary theories, it argues that Castilian- and Catalan-language narratives are expressions of the same culture. Through detailed analyses of texts by Terenci Moix, Francisco Candel, Ignasi Riera, Montserrat Roig, Juan Marsé, Ramon Pallicé, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, among others, the author demonstrates that such writers share similar preoccupations and points of view and also engage in a complex literary and cultural dialogue that cuts across the established linguistic divisions that characterise cultural politics in Catalonia. The Catalan literary establishment's exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness' ischallenged and the author proposes redefining traditional understandings of Catalan literature to take into account texts produced by all members of Catalan society. Stewart King is a lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Monash University, Australia.

Book excerpt: This annual publication examines political, legal, social, and educational issues concerning indigenous peoples around the world in 1998-99. Part I highlights news events and ongoing situations in specific countries. In North America, these include court decisions on the legal status of Alaska Native tribal governments, indigenous subsistence rights and whaling by the Inuit of Nunavut and the Makah of Washington, political developments in Nunavut and the remaining Northwest Territories, and conflicts over Native land rights in the United States. Other sections cover the Arctic, Mexico and Central America, South America, Australia and the Pacific, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Africa. Issues in these regions include deteriorating economic and health conditions and educational needs in Russia's far north, conflicts over development of natural resources in indigenous territories by national and multinational companies, relationships between indigenous peoples and their national governments, intellectual property rights to traditional knowledge, indigenous educational policy in Brazil and elsewhere, language loss and cultural assimilation, and human rights violations and forced relocation. Part II examines indigenous women's issues and organizations in the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Part III includes two articles: "The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Is Still Intact" (Andrew Gray) and "The Ad Hoc Working Group on the Establishment of a Permanent Forum for Indigenous Peoples in the UN System" (Lola Garcia-Alix). Maps and photographs are included. (SV).

Despite regular attention in the media and numerous academic studies the Brazilian Amazon is rarely appreciated as a historical place home to a range of different societies. Often left invisible are the families who are making a living from the rivers and forests of the region. Broadly characterizing these people as peasants Amazon Peasant Societies in a Changing Environment seeks to bring together research by anthropologists, historians, political ecologists and biologists. A new paradigm emerges which helps understand the way in which Amazonian modernity has developed. This book addresses a comprehensive range of questions from the politics of conservation and sustainable development to the organization of women’s work and the diet and health of Amazonian people. Apart from offering an analysis of a neglected aspect of Amazonia this collection represents a unique interdisciplinary exercise on the nature of one of the most beguiling regions of the world.
