This volume summarises the main results obtained during the Project, with each Section addressing a different class of problems, to which many research Units have contributed. Download or read book Seal Wars written by Paul Watson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seal Wars: Twenty-Five Years on the Front Lines is the bold and sprawling memoir of Canadian rebel Paul Watson. To some a hero, to others a 'fokking seal-loving piece of merde,' Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson recounts his 25 years on the front lines in the war to stop the slaughter of the Canadian harp seal. The memoir begins with an incident in 1995 when Watson was holed up in a hotel in the Magdalen Islands with actor Martin Sheen. An angry mob of sealers stormed the hotel and Watson had to be taken out by police and airlifted to safety. Watson then remembers the childhood experiences that shaped his adult consciousness. He runs through a history of the seal hunt, and moves into the campaigns he has fought in, starting in 1976 with a Greenpeace crew off Laborador, including forays onto the ice floes with Brigitte Bardot, Farley Mowat and Pierce Brosnan. Captain Paul Watson grew up on Canada's east coast. He was a founding member of Greenpeace, is an active supporter of North American native peoples and a veteran of Wounded Knee. He is the founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. And he has been the captain of a succession of ships dedicated to the protection of the world oceans, most recently Whales Forever.
Book Synopsis Europe Under Napoleon by : Michael Broers
Download or read book Europe Under Napoleon written by Michael Broers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Bonaparte dominated the public life of Europe like no other individual before him. Not surprisingly, the story of the man himself has usually swamped he stories of his subjects. This book looks at the history of the Napoleonic Empire from an entirely new perspective – that of the ruled rather than the ruler. Michael Broers concentrates on the experience of the people of Europe – particularly the vast majority of Napoleon's subjects who were neither French nor willing participants in the great events of the period – during the dynamic but short-lived career of Napoleon, when half of the European content fell under his rule.
Book Synopsis Innovative Learning Models for Prisoners by : Francesca Torlone
Download or read book Innovative Learning Models for Prisoners written by Francesca Torlone and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prison education should be a top priority issue in most societies. Prison conditions must not infringe human rights and dignity and must offer meaningful treatment programmes in order to support inmates in their rehabilitation and reintegration in society. The use of ICTs within a penitentiary context plays a crucial role in that. The present Volume looks at the learning potential in prisons and reports on innovative (e-)learning pathways for basic skills education as designed and tested in Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Romania. Research investigated on what counts as ‘educational’ in such a complex context and how to combine relevant pieces in a ‘learning mosaic’ (the broad range of any learning opportunity across it). This Volume argues that such an approach may be adopted in a wider European perspective within the frame of dynamic security.

Book Synopsis Napoleon's Integration of Europe by : Stuart Woolf
Download or read book Napoleon's Integration of Europe written by Stuart Woolf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of the Napoleonic period are almost exclusively biographies of the man, or political-military accounts of his wars. But such wars were only the first stage in a far more ambitious programme; the establishment of a rational state which would force the pace of modernising society. Through an examination of the experiences of French domination, Napoleon's Integration of Europe explores the implications of such a project for France and its relationship with the rest of Europe. It examines the problems of ruling a progressively expanding empire, as seen through the eyes of a trained corps of bureaucrates who were convinced that their scientific methods would enable them to understand and govern the mechanisms of society. However it also looks at the populations subjected to French rule, at the nature of their resistance and adaptation to the principles of the Napoleonic project. This book is the first overall comparative study of Europe in the Napoleonic years. It is a study not only of an early exercise in imperialism, but of the conflict that is aroused between the rationalising tendencies of the modern state and the spatial and cultural heterogeneity of individual societies. As well as a history of France, it is also a history of Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Poland and Spain at a crucial moment in the history of each nation state.
