Download or read book The Hitopadesa written by Narayana and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed between 800 and 950 AD, Narayana's Hitopadesa is one of the best-known of all works in Sanskrit literature. A fascinating collection of fables, maxims and sayings in verse, it combines a wide variety of writings from earlier authors in one volume - a 'garden of pleasing stories' created to provide guidance, wisdom and political advice to the reader. With elegance and great humour, Narayana weaves a framework for the classic tales, here narrated by animals who quote from and reflect on stories from the Pancatantra and other traditional sources. At once an anthology of folk wisdom and an original and satirical work in its own right, the Hitopadesa has been deeply admired and widely read for more than a thousand years for its humorous and profound reflections on human lives, loves, follies and philosophies.

Download or read book The Pancatantra written by Sarma, Visnu and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First recorded 1500 years ago, but taking its origins from a far earlier oral tradition, the Pancatantra is ascribed by legend to the celebrated, half-mythical teacher Visnu Sarma. Asked by a great king to awaken the dulled intelligence of his three idle sons, the aging Sarma is said to have composed the great work as a series of entertaining and edifying fables narrated by a wide range of humans and animals, and together intended to provide the young princes with vital guidance for life. Since first leaving India before AD 570, the Pancatantra has been widely translated and has influenced a cast number of works in India, the Arab world and Europe, including the Arabian Nights, the Canterbury Tales and the Fables of La Fontaine. Enduring and profound, it is among the earliest and most popular of all books of fables.

Book Synopsis Trans-Colonial Modernities in South Asia by : Michael S. Dodson
Download or read book Trans-Colonial Modernities in South Asia written by Michael S. Dodson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting cutting-edge scholarship dedicated to exploring the emergence and articulation of modernity in colonial South Asia, this book builds upon and extends recent insights into the constitutive and multiple projects of colonial modernity. Eschewing the fashionable binaries of resistance and collaboration, the contributors seek to re-conceptualize modernity as a local and transitive practice of cultural conjunction. Whether through a close reading of Anglo-Indian poetry, Urdu rhyming dictionaries, Persian Bible translations, Jain court records, or Bengali polemical literature, the contributors interpret South Asian modernity as emerging from localized, partial and continuously negotiated efforts among a variety of South Asian and European elites. Surveying a range of individuals, regions, and movements, this book supports reflection on the ways traditional scholars and other colonial agents actively appropriated and re-purposed elements of European knowledge, colonial administration, ruling ideology, and material technologies. The book conjures a trans-colonial and trans-national context in which ideas of history, religion, language, science, and nation are defined across disparate religious, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries. Providing new insights into the negotiation and re-interpretation of Western knowledge and modernity, this book is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Studies, as well as of intellectual and colonial history, comparative literature, and religious studies.

Book Synopsis BEYOND FRAGMENTATION: Interdisciplinary Thought-provoking Theories by : Mr. Vinod Asudani
Download or read book BEYOND FRAGMENTATION: Interdisciplinary Thought-provoking Theories written by Mr. Vinod Asudani and published by Rudra Publications. This book was released on with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Holistic Ontological Framework of Existence) Nothing exists by itself and nothing perishes by itself. Everything is in relation to others and can be grasped only as such. Be it truth, Enlightenment, the world or humans. All inhere not in and of themselves, but as a function of all others. Einstein came up with the physical theory of relativity, and I won't be off the mark if I say that Dr. Vinod Asudani has, in this triad of theories inaugurated an evoke which would culminate in the ontological theory of relativity, nay relatedness. Dr. Vinod Asudani, though not a philosopher formally, nonetheless is a litterateur of national repute. A litterateur in my opinion is by virtue of the art of words depicting life in a prismatic manner, a philosopher, psychologist, and a sociologist combined.
Book Synopsis Animal Narratology by : Joela Jacobs
Download or read book Animal Narratology written by Joela Jacobs and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Narratology interrogates what it means to narrate, to speak—speak for, on behalf of—and to voice, or represent life beyond the human, which is in itself as different as insects, bears, and dogs are from each other, and yet more, as individual as a single mouse, horse, or puma. The varied contributions to this interdisciplinary Special Issue highlight assumptions about the human perception of, attitude toward, and responsibility for the animals that are read and written about, thus demonstrating that just as “the animal” does not exist, neither does “the human”. In their zoopoetic focus, the analyses are aware that animal narratology ultimately always contains an approximation of an animal perspective in human terms and terminology, yet they make clear that what matters is how the animal is approximated and that there is an effort to approach and encounter the non-human in the first place. Many of the analyses come to the conclusion that literary animals give readers the opportunity to expand their own points of view both on themselves and others by adopting another’s perspective to the degree that such an endeavor is possible. Ultimately, the contributions call for a recognition of the many spaces, moments, and modes in which human lives are entangled with those of animals—one of which is located within the creative bounds of storytelling.
