Book excerpt: Objectives: To explore the efficacy of a new digital signal processing strategy (DSP) by comparing speech intelligibility in noise measures across different sound strategies. Introduction: Hearing aids are of limited benefit for the perceptual consequences that arise from a loss of frequency selectivity. By eliminating inaudible sound energy, and reducing ‘masking’ noise around speech peaks based on individual spreading functions, the new DSP effectively acts as a masking suppressor to enhance spectral contrast between speech peaks and dips. It is hypothesised that a combination of wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) and DSP will show greatest improvement in objective measures of speech intelligibility in noise. It is also hypothesised that no difference in subjective sound quality will be found. Methods: Twenty current hearing aid wearers (60-75 years) with symmetrical, normal/mild, sloping to a moderate/severe sensorineural hearing loss were recruited. Treble increase at low levels (TILL) prescription templates were used to achieve an approximation of real-ear, prescribed WDRC. An estimate of critical bandwidth (CB) was obtained using a consonant-nucleus-consonant (CNC) in white-noise tournament with different DSP types. Objective (QuickSINTM) and subjective (soundscape quality) speech intelligibility in noise results were compared across four sound strategies: No-Processing, DSP, TILL and DSP + TILL. Results: DSP type 1.0 had the highest CNC in white-noise phoneme and word score overall, but was not significantly different from No-Processing. Both DSP and DSP + TILL had significantly higher mean total QuickSINTM scores than No-Processing. Mean DSP + TILL QuickSINTM scores at +5 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) were significantly higher than No-Processing. DSP + TILL also had a significantly higher mean score at +20 dB SNR than No-Processing or TILL. No significant difference in sound quality between strategies was found. Conclusions: This study suggests speech intelligibility can be enhanced in background noise using the new DSP either alone, or in combination with WDRC. The method used to estimate individual CB could be implemented clinically. The new DSP could also be incorporated at the front-end of WDRC hearing aid processing. Future directions include the possibility of integrating a more accurate, objective measure of auditory filter characteristics with the new DSP, and exploring the effects of an acclimatisation period on speech intelligibility in noise.

Book excerpt: The three manuscripts presented here examine concepts related to speech perception in noise and ways to overcome poor speech intelligibility without depriving listeners of environmental sound recognition. Because of hearing-impaired (HI) listeners’ auditory deficits, there is a substantial need for speech-enhancement (noise reduction) technology. Recent advancements in deep learning have resulted in algorithms that significantly improve the intelligibility of speech in noise, but in order to be suitable for real-world applications such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, these algorithms must be causal, talker independent, corpus independent, and noise independent. Manuscript 1 involves human-subjects testing of a novel, time-domain-based algorithm that fulfills these fundamental requirements. Algorithm processing resulted in significant intelligibility improvements for both HI and normal-hearing (NH) listener groups in each signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and noise type tested. In Manuscript 2, the range of speech-to-background ratios (SBRs) over which NH and HI listeners can accurately perform both speech and environmental recognition was determined. Separate groups of NH listeners were tested in conditions of selective and divided attention. A single group of HI listeners was tested in the divided attention experiment. Psychometric functions were generated for each listener group and task type. It was found that both NH and HI listeners are capable of high speech intelligibility and high environmental sound recognition over a range of speech-to-background ratios. The range and location of optimal speech-to-background ratios differed across NH and HI listeners. The optimal speech-to-background ratio also depended on the type of environmental sound present. Conventional deep-learning algorithms for speech enhancement target maximum intelligibly by removing as much noise as possible while maintaining the essential characteristics of the target speech signal. Manuscript 3 tests a new form of time-frequency masking that is designed to leave a small amount of background noise intact. The purpose of the unremoved background noise is to allow for environmental sound awareness while still providing significantly increased intelligibility. It was found that this type of processing resulted in significantly improved intelligibility and high environmental sound recognition performance for both types of listeners. It was also found that the same level of maximum attenuation provided the optimal balance of intelligibility and environmental sound recognition for both listener types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degraded speech intelligibility in background noise is a common complaint of listeners with hearing loss. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect of spectral enhancement of the second formant frequency (F2) on speech identification in noise for older listeners with hearing loss (HI) and with normal hearing (NH). This study also aims to explore whether F2 enhancement improves speech perception in noise across languages such as American English and Mandarin Chinese. Target words (e.g., color and digit) were selected and presented based on the paradigm of coordinate response measure (CRM) corpus of English and Chinese versions. Speech recognition thresholds with original and F2-enhanced speech in two-talker and six-talker babble were examined for English and Chinese listeners with NH and HI. As expected, listeners with NH had better performance on speech perception in noise than listeners with HI in almost all listening conditions. More importantly, thresholds of both NH and HI groups were improved for enhanced speech signals across languages, primarily in two-talker babble, but not in 6-talker babble. Compared with the NH group, listeners with HI showed significantly greater benefits in the most challenging condition (e.g., low signal-to-noise ratios). F2-enhancement benefits did not significantly correlate with memory abilities. Moreover, the speech intelligibility index (SII) model interpreted the F2-enhancement benefits for the two language groups in multi-talker babble. That is, the perceptual improvement was mainly associated with the greater availability of acoustic cues of speech with F2 enhancement in the two-talker babble, but not in the six-talker babble. Overall, speech sounds with F2 enhancement may improve listeners’ speech perception in noise across different languages, possibly due to a greater amount of speech information available.

Remarkable amount of quality improvement has been reported in literature using these methods in the presence of background noise. However, research done in recent years show that these algorithms cannot improve speech intelligibility and in some cases they decreases the intelligibility rate, as compared with the noisy speech signal. This dissertation will address the reasons why current speech enhancement methods are not able to improve intelligibility rate. Also, a new method will be presented, using Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) estimator and pre- and post- signal processing filters. Moreover, an estimator will be proposed which is able to minimize speech distortion and can be used as an alternative for MMSE estimator. Based on the subjective and objective experiments, the proposed algorithms are able to improve speech quality and intelligibility in the presence of a variety of background noises and SNR levels from 0 to 10 dB.

Book excerpt: The masking release (MR; i.e., better speech recognition in fluctuating compared to continuous noise backgrounds) that is evident for normal-hearing (NH) listeners is generally reduced or absent in hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. In this study, a signal-processing technique was developed to improve MR in HI listeners and offer insight into the mechanisms influencing the size of MR. This technique compares short-term and long-term estimates of energy, increases the level of short-term segments whose energy is below the average energy, and normalizes the overall energy of the processed signal to be equivalent to that of the original long-term estimate. In consonant-identification tests, HI listeners achieved similar scores for processed and unprocessed stimuli in quiet and in continuous-noise backgrounds, while superior performance was obtained for the processed speech in some of the fluctuating background noises. Thus, the energy-normalized signals led to larger values of MR compared to that obtained with unprocessed signals.

These distortions can be detrimental to speech intelligibility and quality, and also pose a serious problem for many speech-related applications, including automatic speech and speaker recognition. The objective of this dissertation is to enhance speech signals distorted by reverberation and noise, to benefit both human communications and human-machine interaction.

Book excerpt: Being intelligible to a listener means getting your message across and improving speech intelligibility is one of the most common goals for clients working with a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Improving Speech Intelligibility in Adults: Clinical Application of Evidence-Based Strategies is a professional resource for practicing SLPs working with adults with communication disorders, such as dysarthria, acquired apraxia of speech, and voice disorders. This book incorporates current research findings to support the use of evidence-based strategies in clinical situations. While other books may focus on “drilling” and “practicing” a list of words, sentences, and topics to use with a client to change their behaviors, Improving Speech Intelligibility in Adults uniquely focuses on the speaker and the listener in tandem. The author takes a noteworthy approach in how the listener can change behaviors to assist with understanding. The text presents a comprehensive approach to improving speech intelligibility by including ways to enhance the communication environment during in-person or teletherapy exchanges to enhance understanding between speaker and listener.
