Regular concrete is therefore normally uses reinforcement steel bars to increase the tensile strength. It is becoming increasingly popular to use random distributed fibers as reinforcement and polymeric fibers is once such kind. In the case of polymeric fibers, due to hydrophobicity and lack of any chemical bond between the fiber and matrix, the weak interface zone limits the ability of the fibers to effectively carry the load that is on the matrix phase. Depending on the fiber's surface asperity, shape, chemical nature, and mechanical bond characteristic of the load transfer between matrix and fiber can be altered so that the final composite can be improved. These modifications can be carried out by means of thermal treatment, mechanical surface modifications, or chemical changes The objective of this study is to measure and document the effect of gamma ray irradiation on the mechanical properties of macro polymeric fibers. The objective is to determine the mechanical properties of macro-synthetic fibers and develop guidelines for treatment and characterization that allow for potential positive changes due to exposure to irradiation. Fibers are exposed to various levels of ionizing radiation and the tensile, interface and performance in a mortar matrix are documented. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on irradiated fibers to study fiber strength and failure pattern. SEM tests were carried out in order to study the surface characteristic and effect of different radiation dose on polymeric fiber. The interaction of the irradiated fiber with the cement composite was studied by a series of quasi-static pullout test for a specific embedded length. As a final task, flexural tests were carried out for different irradiated fibers to sum up the investigation. An average increase of 13% in the stiffness of the fiber was observed for 5 kGy of radiation. Flexural tests showed an average increase of 181% in the Req3 value and 102 % in the toughness of the sample was observed for 5 kGy of dose.

In order to improve their interfacial properties, fibers were subjected to chemical treatments, namely, mercerization, silane treatment, benzoylation, and peroxide treatment. Selective removal of non-cellulosic compounds constitutes the main objective of the chemical treatments of flax fibers to improve the performance of fiber-reinforced composites. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of pre-treated flax fibers on the performance of the fiber-reinforced composites. Short flax fibers were derived from Saskatchewan-grown flax straws, for use in fiber-reinforced composites. Composites consisting of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) or HDPE/LLDPE mix, chemically treated fibers and additives were prepared by the extrusion process. Extrusion is expected to improve the interfacial adhesion significantly as opposed to simple mixing of the two components. The extruded strands were then pelletized and ground. The test samples were prepared by rotational molding. Three main strategies were investigated: 1) use of supplementary cementitious materials; 2) use of nano-particles; and 3) use of deformed fibers. A multi-scale investigation involving the evaluation of non-fibrous UHPC mortar phase (matrix), fiber-matrix interface phase, and then UHPC composite material was undertaken to determine microstructural characteristics, fiber bond to matrix, and key mechanical properties of the UHPC matrix and UHPC. Test results indicate that the incorporation of 10%-20% silica fume effectively improved the fiber-matrix bond and mechanical properties due to increased C-S-H content and decreased porosity. The flexural and tensile strengths of UHPC were found to increase by approximately 15%-30% and 35%-70%, respectively. Optimal nano-CaCO3 and nano-SiO2 contents were found to be 3.2% and 1.0%, respectively, by mass of binder. High nano-particle content decreased the fiber-matrix bond and mechanical properties of matrix and UHPC due to the increased porosity and introduction of weak zone at fiber-matrix interface. The use of deformed fibers enhanced bond given additional mechanical interlocking and enhanced friction. Compared to straight fibers, the corrugated and hooked fibers improved the bond strengths by approximately three and seven times, respectively. Such values were three and four times greater for pullout energy. The flexural strengths of UHPC made with 2% corrugated and hooked fibers were enhanced by approximately 10%-30% and 15%-50%, respectively. The tensile/flexural strengths of UHPC can be predicted based on the composite theory given fiber-matrix bond strength, strength of matrix, and fiber characteristics"--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: Contact resonance force microscopy (CR-FM) is a valuable technique for evaluating the interphase of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites and for characterizing the elastic properties of cell wall layers of natural fibers. The nanoscale spatial resolution of CR-FM, combined with its ability to provide quantitative modulus images, makes it possible to investigate the mechanical properties of interphases as narrow as 30 nm in NFRPCs and thin cell wall layers in natural fibers. The nanoscale characterization of interphase and its effects on the bulk mechanical properties in this study shows that an increased interphase thickness is very essential for the improved tensile strength in lyocell/polypropylene (PP)/maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) composites. An optimum amount of MAPP increase the interphase thickness to the maximum of 100 nm and further addition only decreased the interphase thickness and adversely affected the strength properties. The average impact strength was found to decrease with the increasing concentration of MAPP and our results showed that matrix properties were also a determinant factor on the impact strength. After comparing the results obtained from CR-FM, tensile testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), it was quite clear that [Beta] transition was not a strong indicator of the filler --matrix interaction within these composites. For lyocell/PP/maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (MA-SEBS) composites, tensile strength was not a direct reflection of interfacial bonding. The impact strength was found to increase with addition of MA-SEBS. Interphase region showed gradient of modulus values that ranged between the modulus values of the fiber and the matrix for both lyocell/PP/MAPP and lyocell/PP/MA-SEBS composites. The interphase region showed a gradient in modulus that could be described to first order by a linear fit, with a gradual decrease in modulus from fiber to matrix. Also, it was quite evident that the interphase thickness accounts for the majority of property variations within the interphase for different treatments. This result defies the earlier perception of a flexible interphase with low modulus than the matrix formed by the elastomers in composites.
