Book excerpt: Countries have been competing against each other in order to attract financial investment and human capital for decades. However, emerging economies have a long way to go before they achieve the same levels of competitiveness as a developed economy. Lack of firm institutions, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of trust in the legal system are urgent and unavoidable factors that emerging economies must address. The Handbook of Research on Increasing the Competitiveness of SMEs provides innovative insights on integrating, adapting, and building models and strategies compatible with the development of competitiveness in small and medium enterprises in emerging countries. The content within this publication examines quality management, organizational leadership, and digital security. It is designed for policymakers, entrepreneurs, managers, executives, business professionals, academicians, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of the 21st century are immense: implementing a more sustainable development model, maintaining markets and societies as open as possible, deploying entrepreneurial dynamism in the service of the common good, boosting employment, reindustrializing Western countries while promoting the development of emerging countries. ... How can we better focus our extraordinary creative capacity to meet the challenges ahead? If there is a key trend in our time, it is that of the progress of science and technology. This trend has become a steamroller, whatever the vagaries of history and economic conditions. It is enterprise that transforms, often as soon as they emerge, scientific knowledge and technologies into products and services. By mastering the methods and tools of techno-science, it has the power of knowledge behind its economic strategies. Techno-science constantly provides new opportunities and more powerful competitive weapons. Enterprise is therefore the main mediator between science and society. Yet is it an agent of progress? This essay explores the key role enterprise could play in the transformation of the economic system. By changing its culture, it can be a powerful tool to better meet the global challenges of our century. De Woot proposes that a spirit of enterprise, creativity and innovation are necessary responses to societal challenges. Although the current economic model is the source of major deviations, enterprise in the broadest sense can help correct many of them. From *problem* it can become *solution*.

Book excerpt: Global Competitiveness is a combination of concepts, case studies and practical ways on how to achieve and enhance competitiveness in any organisation. Achieving and enhancing competitiveness will lead companies to achieve high level of excellence. The book attempts to answer the 'What, who, when, and how' of Excellence, i.e. 'what' is excellence, 'who' are considered as excellent companies, 'when' a company is prepared to use tools/ frameworks and models to achieve excellence, 'how' strategic competitiveness can be enhanced using one of the most widely used tools, viz., Benchmarking. Business cases from across the globe of different industries have been used to demonstrate how companies have achieved competitiveness and thus enhanced their long-term competitive advantage to become excellent companies. The book has three parts, viz., concepts, business cases and tool for competitiveness. Competitiveness has been widely used in companies, but the understanding of the concept is not consistent across industry and academia. For instance, there are many models and frameworks across the globe, which generally companies use for evaluating and enhancing their competitiveness. Companies often tend to get drifted into the ocean of various models and frameworks and on one fine day adopt a model or framework, only to repent after few quarters or years, as the case may be. It follows what is called 'operation successful, but patient died' syndrome. Although all are good, the judgment of applying 'which' model/ framework and 'when' is very critical. This book throws light on how to choose and not choose various models and frameworks, which generally depends on the company's maturity level, context, and most importantly inherent culture of the company. This book has been designed in a way that it will help a reader to first understand the concept of competitiveness, get an idea of what companies have been doing across the globe to become competitive and then how it can use tools such as benchmarking and other models/ frameworks to build and enhance their own competitiveness. It has been written in a very simple language so that it can be easily read and applied as also can serve as a direction for prompting future thought processes in companies in their journey towards excellence.

This book was released on 2011-11-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the pioneering work of Joseph Schumpeter (1942), it has been assumed that innovations typically play a key role in firms’ competitiveness. This assumption has been applied to firms in both developed and developing countries. However, the innovative capacities and business environments of firms in developing countries are fundamentally different from those in developed countries. It stands to reason that innovation and competitiveness models based on developed countries may not apply to developing countries. In this volume, Vivienne Wang and Elias G. Carayannis apply both theoretical approaches and empirical analysis to explore the dynamics of innovation in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on R&D in manufacturing firms. In so doing, they present an alternative to Michael Porter’s Competitive Advantage Model—a Competitive Position Model that focuses on incremental and adaptive innovations that are more appropriate than radical innovations for developing countries. Their research addresses such questions as: Do innovations advance the competitive positions of manufacturing firms in developing countries? Does the pace of innovation matter, in particular, in socio-economic and socio-political contexts? To what degree can national innovation systems and policies influence development? To what extent do a firm’s innovation commitments correlate with the protection of intellectual property rights? What roles do foreign direct investment and relationships with clusters and networks play? The resulting analysis not only challenges traditional theoretical approaches to innovation, but provides suggestions for improving business practice and policymaking.

Some people say, in fact, that the Internet itself may well suggest a future corporate organization. Under these circumstances, how is the corporate culture, which is integral to the organization, to be duly taken? What is an appropriate culture to the would-be future business organization, which will necessarily be all the more supported and strengthened by information technology? In the author's view, the cultures fit in well with the structure of enterprise competitiveness can readily evolve into the 21st century organization. Such a culture would, with no difficulty, find an arena of its own in the future organization and eventually become integral to the company.
