Among others to whom grateful thanks are tendered are Mrs. Davidson, Mr. Clark, Mr. Dallimore, and Mr. S. W. Fitzherbert. Some of the chapters have already appeared in the Garden, with the object of making known as widely as possible the importance of the most beauti ful trees and shrubs for English woodland and pleasure-grounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planting and Care of Shade Trees The reader is reminded that none of the papers pretends to be exhaustive of its subject; each deals in the briefest possible way with the things that concern the trees of the State, and aims to tell what to avoid as well as what must be done. The bulletin will serve as a manual to those who are accustomed to working with trees, and will guide those who seek to travel an unknown, though it may be an attractive, path. More detailed information will be found in the books listed on page 123, though for any important work tree owners are advised to seek the assistance of a reputable tree planter, tree doctor, arborist or forester. The Agricultural Experiment Station and the Forest Com mission have lists of such and will furnish them upon request. Finance Both offices are prepared to give advice bv md' mail on any matter relating to trees, and, when necessary, either will have a competent man make an ex amination and report. Any municipal body, as a shade tree commission, or the managers of a public institution, will be aided without charge; individuals will ordinarily be re quired to pay the consultant's expenses, but not his salary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade and Ornamental Trees of California While highways, to be sure, are of extreme importance to motorists, an importance which' can scarcely be overestimated, highways are not merely for motorists. Travelers from the East constantly comment upon a California phenomenon never seen in Eastern cities - the long strings of men and girls pouring out of our cities and towns on holidays, clad in hiking costumes and filing along the roadways - for the roads lead to the trails and the trails to the hills. I The work of our State Department of. Forestry in planting and decorating the highways assumes, therefore, more than a special or group interest. While such improvements increase the pleasure and contentment of the traveler and add large economic values to the regions traversed by the roads, the work serves an additional purpose in giving expression to the spirit of our people, their feeling for the out-of-doors - for the hills, valleys and mountain ranges of this state. For these roads will not merely carry the traffic load of trade, binding city to city, but ably planned and adorned they will be silvan threads worthy to join the wonderlands of California each to each and these in turn with the centers of population. In this manner such work will give a visible sign of the mental attitude and Spirit of the Californians. Willis Linn Jepson. University of California, June 18, 1921. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New England Trees in Winter The text with keys is an outgrowth of outlines that one of the authors has developed and used with various modifications for the last four years in his college classes in Botany and Forestry. The photographic illustrations are all originals, most of them by the other author. Although one Of us is responsible for the text and for the selection of the material photographed and the other for the photographs, we have freely consulted and the bulletin is therefore to be considered a joint publication. The order of arrangement of the species in the text and the scientific names follow the usage Of the seventh edition of Gray's Manual and the latter are in accord with the rules laid down in the Vienna Congress. The figures and descriptions given are of trees for the most part growing wild in New England. A few rarer species which occur in New England only very locally or in isolated instances have been omitted from illustration. In their places, however, some of the more frequently cultivated trees, have been included because of their value for forestry planting in New England or because of their familiarity in city ornamental plant ings. The varieties of cultivated forms are so numerous that it is Obviously possible to take account of only the most common types. Their inclusion, it is believed, will add to the value of the publi cation especially for its use in cities. The keys can be absolutely relied upon only for the species just mentioned from New England. New England, including as it does the meeting ground between the northern and southern fioras, is extremely rich in the species of trees represented. The bulletin, therefore, especially in its descriptive text and illustrations should prove of service outside of the geographically restricted region described. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles, Vol. 1 In the case of nomenclature of species, I have with few exceptions clung to what is known as the Kew rule of giving a plant the specific name first published in conjunction with the proper genus. In the preparation of this work I have had the enormous advantage of being able to make full use, not only of the magnificent collections of living plants at Kew, but also of the herbarium of trees and shrubs which has been in course of formation there for thirty years, at first by the late Mr Geo. Nicholson, and during the last thirteen years by myself. There are very few of the descriptions that have not been made from authentic material - living or dried. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tree-Lifter, or a New Method of Transplanting Forest Trees Among the advantages of transplanting with the Tree-lifter may be reckoned its cheapness. Its simplicity is such that the whole may be performed, and even single-handed, by a common day labourer. One man may plant one tree per day, of from twenty-five to thirty feet in height. To transplant trees without the ball of earth requires great care, labour, and expense in tracing out the small fibres of the roots, which after all are nearly valueless. All transplanted trees are the better for being watered; but with the ball of earth this is by no means neces A 2sary. To transplant without the ball of earth, and not to water, for at least two summers, is hopeless. This is a great expense, besides staking, and tying, which plants with the ball of earth do not need. The growth of trees trans planted with a ball of earth is not checked; but without a ball of earth, trees trans planted with Whatever care, or at whatever expense, are checked in their growth for eight or ten years, and if they do not die, they become living scarecrows.
