Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary Flipping the Translation in Popular Science is a collection of Dr. Tsai’s research and teaching experiences over the years as an instructor of courses on popular science and translation, and on translation practice in both directions between Chinese and English. The research material covers the latest science articles published through 2014-2016, providing translation examples with updates of technological development and new information on scientific matters. The book looks into common errors made by translation students, categorizes the reasons for such analysis error, and offers practical solutions and principles for translators to practice translation on scientific subjects. Key Features The author of the book has both a linguistics and a neuroscience background, providing a cross-disciplinary perspective to the discipline of translation. The participants in the study are graduate students of a translation and interpreting program, thus the discussion in the book avoids basic grammar and spelling errors that beginning learners of English would make. Data provided in this study are specific to translation as an academic research subject, not translation as a medium in English teaching. The book provides real-life translation examples from two directions, from English to Chinese, and from Chinese to English. Information about the Author Dr. Pei-Shu Tsai is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation, National Changhua University of Education, Taiwan. She received a MA in linguistics at National Taiwan University and obtained training in cognitive neuroscience for her PhD study at National Yang-Ming University. Her research interests cover linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, psycholinguistics, and first/second-language acquisition, with a focus on semantics and ambiguity at lexical, sentential, pragmatic, and cultural levels. The book covers theories of equivalence, purpose, description, uncertainty, localization, and cultural translation. This second edition adds coverage on new translation technologies, volunteer translators, non-lineal logic, mediation, Asian languages, and research on translators’ cognitive processes. Readers are encouraged to explore the various theories and consider their strengths, weaknesses, and implications for translation practice. The book concludes with a survey of the way translation is used as a model in postmodern cultural studies and sociologies, extending its scope beyond traditional Western notions. Features in each chapter include: An introduction outlining the main points, key concepts and illustrative examples. Examples drawn from a range of languages, although knowledge of no language other than English is assumed. Discussion points and suggested classroom activities. A chapter summary. This comprehensive and engaging book is ideal both for self-study and as a textbook for Translation theory courses within Translation Studies, Comparative Literature and Applied Linguistics.

Book excerpt: Translation Studies and linguistics have been going through a love-hate relationship since the 1950s. This book assesses both sides of the relationship, tracing the very real contributions that linguists have made to translation studies and at the same time recognizing the limitations of many of their approaches. With good humour and evenhandedness, Fawcett describes detailed taxonomies of translation strategies and deals with traditional problems such as equivalence. Yet he also explains and assesses the more recent contributions of text linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and psycholinguistics. This work is exceptional in that it presents theories originally produced in Russian, German, French and Spanish as well as English. Its broad coverage and accessible treatment provide essential background reading for students of translation at all levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant power is exercised through webs created between different systems of national law, influenced by governments but also by transnational actors such as global corporations and transnational NGOs, and often with an overlay of formal international law or of substantial influence from international institutions. Studying the procedures used by competition institutions (dealing with specific cases concerning monopolies, mergers, anti-competitive practices) this volumes uses a template to study practices of many national institutions and the EU, and examines the interactions among these and with prescriptions of influential international bodies. Together these form a web, with existing procedural rules and practices in a particular institution criticized and alternatives championed and transmitted partly by prescription and partly by arguments of major global law firms, of global corporations, and of consultants dispatched by the ICN and other agencies. This whole process, examined for the first time in this book, is the real global governance of the procedural law and practices of market supervision under competition rules. Delving deeply into their jurisdictions and internationally, the contributors illuminate the inner workings of the systems and expose the procedure, process, and performance norms embedded within. Case studies are drawn from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, South Africa, the USA, and the EU, as well as four leading international institutions involved in antitrust, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the International Competition Network. The results reveal a convergence of these norms across the very different systems, a procedural norms convergence that offers a necessary counterpart to studies on substantive rule convergence. These results provide benchmarks for the field, suggest possibilities for future development, and offer lessons for all interested in competition law and global governance.

Book excerpt: "The Translator's Dialogue: Giovanni Pontiero" is a tribute to an outstanding translator of literary works from Portuguese, Luso-Brasilian, Italian and Spanish into English. The translator introduced authors such as Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira, Clarice Lispector and Jose Saramago to the English reading world.Pontiero's essays shed light on the process of literary translation and its impact on cultural perception. This process is exemplified by Pontiero the translator and analyst, some of the authors he collaborated with, publishers' editors and literary critics and, finally, by an unpublished translation of a short story by Jose Saramago, "Coisas."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with the most topical questions of the time, Sofia Tolstaya’s artistic works—from parables to short stories, novellas, and memoirs—show deep insights into the social context of nineteenth-century Russia. In his lengthy review of My Life (along with other Tolstaya publications) in Canadian Slavonic Papers, the eminent Tolstoy scholar Hugh McLean (2011) laments the fact that it has taken so long (almost a century after her death) to focus academic attention on Sofia Tolstaya, and that there has been no unified publication of her works, scattered as they are among dated journals or not published at all. This book aims to help fill this lacuna by offering a critical introduction to her literary output as a writer in her own right, and presenting, for the first time, an anthology of her main artistic works, some in fresh English translation, and others never translated before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1920, three ships steamed into the port of Famagusta in the British colony of Cyprus with sick and wounded officers and men of the White Russian army, together with their families and other civilians fleeing the victorious Bolsheviks at the end of the Civil War, which had raged through the country after the 1917 Russian Revolution. Britain had offered transport and temporary sanctuary in its nearest territory. 1,546 desperate men, women, and children from two of the ships were housed in a WWI Turkish prisoner-of-war camp to wait for other countries to offer asylum; the other ship sailed on to Egypt and another camp. In Cyprus, some died and some moved on, but a group of about seventy saw opportunities for a new life on the island. They formed the core of a Russian community which attracted other migrs over the decades but whose story is largely unknown or forgotten, even on the island. One of them was the authors grandfather. The author has tracked down official documents and historical sources and interwoven them with her own notes and diaries to tell her personal and human account of a Russian family in Cyprus, through three generations and fifty years of dramatic events.
