This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poetry in Its Relation to Painting and the Other Arts, Vol. 8 All the arts of man spring from a single well of inspiration. They spring from the deep impulse and desire to create an ideal world more true to our real selves, more adequate to our innate conceptions, than anything we can achieve in actual existence. In the affairs of life, circumstances are so obstinate and hindering, human relations so intricate, that even the finest and the strongest spirits have to accept much compromise and failure. But in the innocent and disinterested world of art mankind breathes freer, sees clearer, and comes nearer to the life it would like to live. The unifying principle of all the arts is rhythm; for the movement of life, unimpeded by circumstances, is naturally rhythmical, and art expresses life at its fullest and most intense. Book Synopsis The Art of English Poesy by : George Puttenham
Download or read book The Art of English Poesy written by George Puttenham and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Puttenham's Art of English Poesy is a foundational work of English Renaissance criticism and literary theory. Rich in detail about the nature, purpose, and functions of poetry as well as the poet's character and goals, it is also a valuable historical document, offering generous insight into Elizabethan court culture, implicitly on display in the attitudes and values of the writer. His illustrative anecdotes enable us to watch European courtiers negotiating their social and political relationships with one another as well as with rulers and social inferiors. This new critical edition of The Art of English Poesy contains the first modernized and fully annotated edition of Puttenham's 1589 text; a substantial introductory essay by Frank Whigham and Wayne A. Rebhorn; a comprehensive bibliography; several glossaries and appendixes; and an index. The editors' masterly essay introduces Puttenham to modern readers and situates The Art of English Poesy in the context of the rhetorical theory, poetics, and courtly conduct of its time. The introduction also includes a concise biography of Puttenham based on a variety of new and unfamiliar data: he married an older and much richer woman whom he badly mistreated; indulged habitually in a life of sexual predation; was repeatedly sued, arrested, and imprisoned; survived several supposed attempts on his life; and died, nearly indigent, in 1591. For scholars and students of the English Renaissance, the Cornell edition of The Art of English Poesy should prove the definitive edition of Puttenham's major work.

Book Synopsis Blake's Composite Art by : W.J. Thomas Mitchell
Download or read book Blake's Composite Art written by W.J. Thomas Mitchell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can poem and picture collaborate successfully in a composite art of text and design? Or does one art inevitably dominate the other? W.J.T. Mitchell maintains that Blake's illuminated poems are an exception to Suzanne Langer's claim that "there are no happy marriages in art—only successful rape." Drawing on over one hundred reproductions of Blake's pictures, this book shows that neither the graphic nor the poetic aspect of his composite art consistently predominates: their relationship is more like an energetic rivalry, a dialogue between vigorously independent modes of expression. W.J.T. Mitchell is Professor of English and Art and Design at the University of Chicago and editor of Critical Inquiry. Originally published in 1978. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Reading Cy Twombly by : Mary Jacobus
Download or read book Reading Cy Twombly written by Mary Jacobus and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book on the central importance of literary sources in the paintings of Cy Twombly Many of Cy Twombly's paintings and drawings include handwritten words and phrases—naming or quoting poets ranging from Sappho, Homer, and Virgil to Mallarmé, Rilke, and Cavafy. Enigmatic and sometimes hard to decipher, these inscriptions are a distinctive feature of his work. Reading Cy Twombly poses both literary and art historical questions. How does poetic reference in largely abstract works affect their interpretation? Reading Cy Twombly is the first book to focus specifically on the artist’s use of poetry. Twombly’s library formed an extension of his studio and he sometimes painted with a book open in front of him. Drawing on original research in an archive that includes his paint-stained and annotated books, Mary Jacobus’s account—richly illustrated with more than 125 color and black-and-white images—unlocks an important aspect of Twombly’s practice. Jacobus shows that poetry was an indispensable source of reference throughout Twombly’s career; as he said, he "never really separated painting and literature." Among much else, she explores the influence of Ezra Pound and Charles Olson; Twombly’s fondness for Greek pastoral poetry and Virgil’s Eclogues; the inspiration of the Iliad and Ovid’s Metamorphoses; and Twombly’s love of Keats and his collaboration with Octavio Paz. Twombly’s art reveals both his distinctive relationship to poetry and his use of quotation to solve formal problems. A modern painter, he belongs in a critical tradition that goes back, by way of Roland Barthes, to Baudelaire. Reading Cy Twombly opens up fascinating new readings of some of the most important paintings and drawings of the twentieth century.
