Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Misrule in Ireland, Vol. 1: A Course of Lectures in Reply to James Anthony Froude The idea of an "Irish-American Library," similar to the "Library of Ireland," which Davis originated for his and our native land, suggested itself to us many years ago, and would have been put into practical execution before now, but that circumstances did not permit us to subtract from other and more pressing duties the time and personal attention that were required to make the experiment not only successful, but worthy of the National idea it would represent. The necessity of some such collection of works relating to our people, - in their connection with their native and adopted countries, - has, however, never been absent from our mind. And recent events have so strongly demonstrated the urgency of that need, that our resolution was at once taken to do what lay in our power to supply the want, and at least to make a beginning of what may hereafter be a work of some consequence to our people in this New World. The Irish-American element, at the present day, in this Republic, is second to no other in importance as a component portion of the community. Its status in the history of the country, from the earliest dates of which we have any authentic or reliable records, has never been insignificant. Yet, with the exception of two volumes (both the work of men who, however able, were very imperfectly acquainted with the subjects on which they treated), we have met no work that even pretended to deal with the connection of the Irish race with this Republic, or preserve to futurity the record of what Irish-Americans have done, and are doing, for the advancement of the land in which so many of them have found citizenship and hospitable welcome. Yet this deficiency does not spring from lack of material fit for authentic history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brilliantly innovative synthesis of narrative and analysis illuminates how British colonialism shaped the formation and political cultures of what became Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State. A Treatise on Northern Ireland, Volume I provides a somber and compelling comparative audit of the scale of recent conflict in Northern Ireland and explains its historical origins. Contrasting colonial and sectarianized accounts of modern Irish history, Brendan O'Leary shows that a judicious meld of these perspectives provides a properly political account of direct and indirect rule, and of administrative and settler colonialism. The British state incorporated Ulster and Ireland into a deeply unequal Union after four re-conquests over two centuries had successively defeated the Ulster Gaels, the Catholic Confederates, the Jacobites, and the United Irishmen—and their respective European allies. Founded as a union of Protestants in Great Britain and Ireland, rather than of the British and the Irish nations, the colonial and sectarian Union was infamously punctured in the catastrophe of the Great Famine. The subsequent mobilization of Irish nationalists and Ulster unionists, and two republican insurrections amid the cataclysm and aftermath of World War I, brought the now partly democratized Union to an unexpected end, aside from a shrunken rump of British authority, baptized as Northern Ireland. Home rule would be granted to those who had claimed not to want it, after having been refused to those who had ardently sought it. The failure of possible federal reconstructions of the Union and the fateful partition of the island are explained, and systematically compared with other British colonial partitions. Northern Ireland was invented, in accordance with British interests, to resolve the 'hereditary animosities' between the descendants of Irish natives and British settlers in Ireland. In the long run, the invention proved unfit for purpose. Indispensable for explaining contemporary institutions and mentalities, this volume clears the path for the intelligent reader determined to understand contemporary Northern Ireland.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Misrule in Ireland, Vol. 1: A Course of Lectures in Reply to James Anthony Froude In selecting for the first issue of this series the lectures of Father Burke in refutation of the sophistries of the English historian Froude, we have been influenced not merely by the intrinsic merit and beauty of those discourses, and their value as a defence of our national character, but also by the consideration of that tendency of the American mind which impels it to deal immediately and directly with what is present, and to leave the remote past for more leisurely consideration. The value of these lectures, both as a defence of our people against a most flagrant attack, and as a future source of reference in relation to many important portions of our history, will be materially enhanced by the Appendix which we have added, and which contains all the most authentic historical quotations relating to the matters which Mr. Froude has so artfully misrepresented or mystified. Book excerpt: Writing the Frontier: Anthony Trollope between Britain and Ireland is the first book-length study of the great Victorian novelist's relationship with Ireland, the country which became his second home and was the location of his first personal and professional success. It offers an in-depth exploration of Trollope's time in Ireland as a rising Post Office official, contextualising his considerable output of Irish novels and short stories and his ongoing interest in the country, its people, and its always complicated relationship with Britain. Trollope's Irish novels were long neglected but are vital to any understanding of his entire oeuvre and when given their just place alter our overall view of the writer and his take on the world. Uniquely among his fellow English novelists, Trollope consciously occupied a mediating position, believing he knew Ireland better than any other Englishman and better than most Irishmen and used his novels to represent that Ireland to an English public. Trollope's Irish works constitute a vital and distinct group of works, add significantly to our vision of the writer, change the prevalent view that he is always safe and "English", and represent a rich and underestimated contribution to the canon of the nineteenth century Irish novel tout court, complicating the sometimes arbitrary divisions that are drawn between the English and the Irish traditions.
