Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature in the Eighteenth Century This volume contains the substance of a course of lectures delivered in Cambridge, and repeated in part in Philadelphia, during the winter of 1881-82. This statement will, it is hoped, incline the reader to overlook the direct appeals to his memory and attention, which may be permissible to one reading aloud to a friendly audience, although less pardonable in the formality of print. In preparing this book for the press I have endeavored to make the references to the works of other writers as full and as exact as possible, but I would once more explicitly acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. J. A. Symonds, whose volumes on Italian literature have been of constant service; to Mr. Leslie Stephen, whose "History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century" is a thorough exposition of many subjects barely mentioned by me; to Mr. Karl Hillebrand's profound "German Thought," and to Mr. Alexandre Beljame's "Le Public et les Hommes de Lettres." This last-mentioned book I have made use of continually, especially in the pages on the periodicals that preceded the Tatler, on Pope, and on Addison. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Historical Outline of English Literature: From the Origins to the Close of the Eighteenth Century This brief outline of the history of English Literature is intended simply for class use. The bibliographical refer ence is made largely with the Mt. Holyoke College Library in mind, and with the hope that the shelf numbers may lighten the difficulties of looking for books when a student wishes to save all the time for reading. The aim has been not to multiply the numbers of authorities, historical and critical, and the number of authors proper, but to diminish them so far as the subject permitted, thus simplifying the work of the student. The Special Topics, too, have been limited. It has not been an easy task to do this, as subjects of interest in any period are countless, and to select wisely an impossibility. It is hoped, however, that both Bibliographical Reference, in which Miss Bertha E. Blakely has given invaluable assist ance, and Special Topics may prove not only helpful in an Historical Outline Course, but also an incentive to further work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Romanticism in the Eighteenth Century Historians of French and German literature are accustomed to set off a period, or a division of their subject, and entitle it Romanticism or the Romantic School. Writers of English literary history, While recognizing the importance of Eng land's share in this great movement in European letters, have not generally accorded it a place by itself in the arrangement of their subject-matter, but have treated it cursively, as a tendency present in the work of individual authors; and have maintained a simple chronological division of eras into the Georgian, the Victorian, etc. The reason of this is perhaps to be found in the fact that, although Romanticism be gan earlier in England than on the Continent and lent quite as much as it borrowed in the international exchange of literary commodities, the native move ment was more gradual and scattered. It never reached so compact a shape, or came so definitely to a head, as in Germany and France. There never was precisely a romantic school or an all-pervading romantic fashion in England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and Society in the Eighteenth Century: Ford Lectures MY dear herbert, - I had prepared these Lectures for delivery, when a serious breakdown of health made it utterly impossible for me to appear in person. The University was then good enough to allow me to employ a deputy; and you kindly undertook to read the Lectures for me. I have every reason to believe that they lost nothing by the change. I need only explain that, although they had to be read in six sections, and are here divided into five chapters, no other change worth noticing has been made. Other changes probably ought to have been made, but my health has been unequal to the task of serious correction. The publication has been delayed from the same cause. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century The principles governing the choice of selections may be briefly explained. In the first place, it was thought well to re present the half-dozen (more or less) most important prose writers of the century by fairly generous and complete speci mens of their work, approximating some twenty to thirty thou sand words each. These selections cover, in the experience of the editor, the assignments of prescribed reading set for one or two weeks, in college courses dealing with the century as a whole. The authors thus largely represented are Defoe, Swift, Steele, Addison, Johnson, Boswell, and Burke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Scene, in the Eighteenth Century To attain the object in view it was necessary that the treatment of the subject should be at once broad and simple; to enter minutely into details, to offer illustrations of every statement of fact or of opinion, would lessen clearness of outline. It would have been equally inappropriate to load the following pages with references, since a view presented in a few lines is frequently the result of the consideration of many facts, and of numerous authorities. Some references have, however, been inserted, chiefly to enable a reader who desires to follow a particular subject at length, to have at hand some guide when he begins his quest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century At no time since his death has Shakespeare not been placed upon a pinnacle by himself as the greatest of all English writers. But each age has its own point of View, its own special interests, its characteristic method of treatment; and no age can ever say the last word on anything that is a living and life-giving force. Say the last word on Shakespeare, and Shakespeare is dead. There can never be finality in the criticism of a great author. The truth and the beauty embodied in his work exercise the taste and the acumen of one critic, and remain undiminished and untarnished for the next. All the best criticism of the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Literature: An Oxford Miscellany There is an essay of Goldsmith's, on the theatrical productions of his time, which a writer on the Sentimental Comedy would like to quote in extenso. And for this reason - that this kind of comedy, which Goldsmith described with great humour but with perfect justice in the piece in question, is a thing exceedingly difficult to define. Perhaps it is too near to us. We know it too well to be able to define it. Every one can recognize it at a glance. If you dip into a play written after 1710 or so, and find such a passage as this: - Oh, my child! my child! [Embraces her, and a comic servant or trusted butler sheds manly tear.] Child. All-gracious Heaven! is it possible! Do I embrace my father? you will know without the need of any definition that you have struck a genuine spring of that dolorous fountain of sham tears and sham wit - La Comedie Larmoyante, The Comedy of Sighs (that shall be changed to cries of joy in the Fifth Act), the subject of our essay - The Sentimental Comedy invented by the great essayist Sir Richard Steele. This is how Goldsmith describes it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The familiar tradition is fully represented by selections from such poets as Pope, Swift, Tomson, Gray, Smart, Goldsmith, Cowper, Burns, and Blake. In addition, the anthology includes verse by many forgotten writers, both men and women, from all levels of society. Although they have never figured in conventional literary history, they wrote humorous, idiosyncratic, and graphic verse about their personal experience and the world around them, in a way that should challenge received ideas about the period's restraints and inhibitions.
