Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English, Vol. 1 The vogue of the Reed and Kellogg series of textbooks in language and grammar, extending over more than a generation, is one of the remarkable facts in the history of American school texts. The continuing popularity of the series and its immense sales prove that the books have an amazing vitality and adaptability. Teachers and pupils pay them the high tribute of satisfaction and confidence. With the rearrangement and enrichment of the elementary course in English, there came a time when many teachers felt that the essential soundness of the Reed and Kellogg series and its power of interesting and enlightening should be systematically adapted to present practices and needs. New methods and new programs of education required some eliminations and the additions of whatever of value has been established by the enthusiastic attention to English teaching in the last two decades. At the same time, it was obviously desirable to retain all those merits of the books which have helped hundreds of thousands of students to a better grasp of our language. It is in the teaching of composition that the greatest advances in Elementary English instruction have been made in recent years. The increasing use of literature, both prose and poetry, not only as models but as a means of stirring the imagination and freeing tongue and pen, is reflected in this revision. The use of pictures, the relation of expression work to life, the harmonizing of the book problems with the child's world, are here emphasized. It has not been forgotten, however, that every good text in this field must be in large measure a drill book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Lessons, Vol. 1 Each week's work contains four daily exercises in com position and one in the application of some of the Simpler principles and forms of the English language. The authors are indebted to the late Dr. E. E. White for the suggestion of this grouping, his idea being to keep the child on one line of work until a good degree of proficiency is attained. The most effective school work in composition is done by inciting pupils to speak and to write with the utmost freedom, without hampering them in the beginning with rules. The composition exercises given are not intended to teach reading, natural history, or spelling, but if pos sible to induce the pupil to tell or to write something. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English, Vol. 1: Elementary Lessons in English The two books of the Modern English Course are closely related, not only in a common purpose to arouse interest in the correct use of the English of to-day, but in the means by which this purpose is to be attained. Both books aim to make pupils able to express their own thoughts with freedom and satisfaction, to understand with ease the thoughts of others, and to appreciate when such thoughts are expressed with power, beauty, or grace. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher, who should have a deep interest in the language and be master of its forms and uses. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in the Speaking, and Writing of English, Vol. 1: Book One Language Lessons The study of English is of supreme importance to the people of the United States. With no other subject in the curriculum is the national well-being so intimately connected. The very existence of the republic depends in no small measure upon the possession and use of a language that carries the same meaning clearly and unequivocally to every citizen, of whatever race or traditions. This would be true even if language were merely an instrument of communication which left unchanged the mind and character of its user. But, as everyone knows, no language can be used habitually without modifying profoundly the forms of thought, the knowledge, the beliefs, the traditions, the ideals, and the character of anyone who uses it. The English language is therefore the most potent single force now transforming our heterogeneous population into a homogeneous and unified people. But this is not all. Language, not as an instrument of use, but as an object of study, is unsurpassed for the development of the thinking powers. True of all languages, this is especially true of English, the whole organization and meaning of which exercise the logical and rational faculties. Whatever may be the case with other languages, English cannot be studied as a purely formal discipline. The content is of greater importance than the form; and the content of language is as varied as human life and almost as educative. It is desirable, therefore, that English should be taught in our schools not only in such ways as will provide a uniform in strument of clear and exact communication, but also in such ways as will cultivate the power of clear and exact thinking, and establish noble ideals of life and character. Success in this arduous but inspiring task lies in the hands of the teachers of our common schools and of those who have the power to lighten or make heavy their task by providing or with holding the proper conditions and means of labor. O Every lesson has been developed in actual teaching both by the author and by teachers under his supervision. The lessons come as the result of experiment under conditions varying from the un graded rural school to the most advanced graded schools. To provide for these varying conditions with a language series that is rich in content, well-organized, definite, yet exible, and at the same time practical and teachable, has been the great problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method of English, Vol. 1: For Secondary Schools This little book professes to be, not an English Grammar, but a course of English Lessons for the junior forms of Secondary Schools. It contains, indeed, all the grammar that is of any importance, but it contains other things too, and is written with a certain definite intention. It is intended for children who already Speak and write English fairly well, and who are beginning to learn another lan guage. Now, it is notorious that such children are apt to pre sume on their knowledge, and to neglect and despise the English lesson. Yet they cannot follow a long sentence, or understand poetical diction, and when they come to the syntax of a foreign language they blunder sadly from mere ignorance of the functions of words in their own language. Who, for instance, has ever taught the' use of prepositions with the infinitive in French, or of at with the subjunctive in Latin, without finding that he had to give a lesson in English grammar as well? In truth, the higher work of schools is perpetually hampered by the neglect of English in the lower classes. It is often said, and is sometimes true, that, sooner or later, pupils learn English grammar through Latin, but many of them learn neither, and the process is in any case unreasonable.
