Students will read Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief, a high-interest novel about a sixth-grade boy on a hero's journey, as well as complex informational texts that explain the archetypal storyline of the hero's journey and other elements of myths. As a whole class, students will closely read several complex Greek myths. They then will work in small groups to build expertise on one of those myths. A series of writing lessons will scaffold students to their final performance task in which they will apply their knowledge about the hero's journey and the elements of mythology to create their own hero's journey stories.

Paths to College and Career's instructional resources address the needs of all learners, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and gifted and talented. The curriculum is flexible, user friendly, engaging, and purposefully built to prepare students for career, college, and life. What are "rules to live by"? How do people formulate and use "rules" to improve their lives? How do people communicate these "rules" to others? In Module 2 of Grade 6, students consider these questions as they read the novel Bud, Not Buddy, Steve Jobs' 2005 commencement address at Stanford University, President Barack Obama's Back-to-School Speech, "If" by Rudyard Kipling, and informational research texts. Students write a literary argument essay in which they establish a claim about how Bud uses his "rules," substantiating their claim using specific text-based evidence. Then they shift their focus to their own rules to live by and conduct a short research project. As a final performance task, students use their research to write an essay to inform about one important "rule to live by" supported with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, and examples.

The curriculum is flexible, user friendly, engaging, and purposefully built to prepare students for career, college, and life. In Module 3 of Grade 6, student study how an author develops point of view and how an author's perspective, based on his or her culture, is evident in his or her writing. Students will read Lawrence Yep's Dragonwings, a high-interest novel about an eight-year-old boy from China who joins his father in San Francisco in the early 1900s. As they read the novel, students also will read excerpts of Lawrence Yep's biography The Lost Garden in order to determine how his culture and his experiences shaped his perspective. Students analyze how point of view and perspective is conveyed in excerpts of "Comprehending the Calamity," a primary source account written by Emma Burke about her experiences of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires, and compare the point of view of Emma Burke of the immediate aftermath of the earthquake to the point of view of Moon Shadow in Dragonwings. Students finish the module by researching to gather factual information and eyewitness accounts about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire in order to write their own newspaper articles containing multiple perspectives about how the earthquake and fires affected the people of San Francisco.

In Module 4 of Grade 6, students explore the benefits and harmful consequences of the use of the controversial pesticide DDT. Students read the novel Frightful's Mountain by Jean Craighead George, citing evidence and drawing inferences from this compelling text as they begin to think about the interactions between people and the natural world. They also will read informational texts and watch videos to gather evidence and trace arguments about the uses, benefits, and harmful consequences of DDT. Students also will engage in a research project, continuing to explore the central question of the module, synthesizing all their reading in order to make and present their own evidence-based claim about the use of DDT. As the final performance task, students share their findings by creating a scientific poster and presenting that poster to peers during a hosted gallery.
