Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the Schools Here, as in the less important matter of form-study, and with less reason, lack of inflection is made the ground of a charge that English syntax is not amenable to logical methods. This is a grave indictment, and, if true, condemns our lan guage, not only for training purposes, but apparently also for human nature's daily use. Our relations as intelligent, social beings go on the supposition that our language is a logical me dium of communication, and it had been doing its work fairly well until these minute classic philosophers sought to blast its scholastic pretensions and threaten its practical usefulness with this notable discovery. The pressing necessities of our case, the absolute demand for English in all departments of life, and the despair of supplying its place must excuse the mother tongue for not stepping down and out at the bidding of these philological Mrs. Guppys, who so domineeringly order lan guages out of their own homes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the Preparatory Schools This lack of proper training in the use of English is due largely to two causes; first, the want of some efficient method in the teaching of English and, second, the reluctance shown by our best teachers to engaging in this branch of work. Possi bly the second reason may be the result of the first; possibly it is the result of some inherent prejudice, or some unconfessed doubts as to the dignity of this kind of work. As to these last reasons, it must be acknowledged that, under the existing methods, the work is far from agreeable or inspiring to either teacher or taught, and no teacher can justly be blamed for pre ferring to avoid it whenever possible. The question may well be asked, however, whether this very reluctance is not one main cause why this important branch of work has been so long neglected, and whether, if our best-equipped and most earnest teachers were to apply themselves to a solution of the problem, it would not soon be solved as easily as were numerous other knotty problems in educational methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English for Schools, Colleges, and Private Study Observed that either individuals or nations normally start with science. Another error, which has been a long-standing cause of the unfruitfulness so often seen in English teaching, is the attempt to bring the facts and idioms of the language into conformity with the rules of Latin. But what have they now in common? Once, indeed, our English was in flected; but not till long after it began to cast itself into its present simple mould was a constructive grammar given it - then a grammar whose rules and nomenclature were taken from the Latin, with which it had scarcely any formal affinity, to which it bore no formal likeness, and from which, though it has borrowed words, it has bor rowed no principles. 'parts of speech' are recognized in the one, as Of Old, by the inflection test; in' the other, no longer thus, but by the junction Of ideas. A teacher should know what he is going to teach and how he is going to teach it before he begins his work. Scanty knowledge of a subject, and imma ture and indefinite methods Of presenting it to a class, can not yield satisfactory results. Teaching that does not lead the pupil to see clearly the important principle or fact in the lesson and its relation to principles and facts already known is mere recitation hearing - a soulless formalism. An ex planation that pupils cannot understand, on account of the teacher's scanty knowledge of the subject and the verbose and Slovenly language used, discourages pupils. To teach effectively, the teacher must know his subject, and must use clear and concise language in explanations and illustra tions. What a teacher knows only superficially he cannot clearly present to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The teacher should always bear in mind that no pupil can write until he has something to say, a fact which has been kept constantly in view in the presentation of the constructive work contained in this book. The author desires to acknowledge her indebted ness to certain of her friends whose suggestions and criticisms have been invaluable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working Course in English for the Public Schools A well-rounded presentation of reading requires the subject to be approached from two distinct points of view. In the first, methods are used to give the children a mastery of the technique of pronounciation. In this approach the New Education System or the Ward System of Rational Reading may be taken as a basis. In as much as drill in reading based on the phonetic method is apt to develop mere formal work, unaccompanied on the part of the child by an understanding of the sense, a wholly different approach to the reading lesson must at times be made. This approach is an attempt to lead the child into the lesson by making him appeciate its thought. The child should be induced to "sense" the thought behind the words. An appeal must be made to his experience to make him realize the thought. He should be led to see vividly the scenes portrayed by the sentences. Lessons in which the words convey even by their very sounds a large part, at least, of their meaning should be chosen as often as possible for this second phase of the work. The child is to be made to see, to feel, to picture the central idea of the sentence. Having done this, he is ready to utilize the formal articulation of words, gained through the study of words phonetically, in the clear and live expression of the thought as he reads the sentence. "How to Teach Reading," by S. H. Clark (S. F. & Co.), deals at length, in chapter viii, with the expression of the central idea of the sentence. School reading naturally divides itself into three heads; first, the regular recitation work in the State Series Reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recommended English Readings for High Schools The purpose of this book is to provide for each half year in the four years of the high school course a list of books adapted to the age of the pupils and so grouped as to suggest a special interest every term. Conditions vary so widely, that teachers will often wish to direct their pupils in one term to the groups suggested for another term. No book can take the place of per sonal contact between teacher and pupil. It has seemed, how ever, in the main, that much time could be saved for busy teachers by providing for every pupil an outline such as this. Dictation of lists is a waste of class time; copying posted lists is a waste of pupils' time outside of class. Questions will naturally arise as to the reason for choosing certain groups for certain terms. While the arrangement is not intended to be hard and fast, and the Index will make it easy for the teacher to select groups in whatever order he desires, there have been definite purposes in view. Pupils should be led, first, in the light of their own experience, to study the simple facts of language, and then to investigate the more difficult matters of construction and inflection until they arrive at the general laws' which govern its structure. In other words, pupils should be helped to help themselves. And yet it is next to impossible to present inductive lessons throughout a text-book. Lessons must be prepared for classes of pupils; and no one but the teacher can know to What extent each child needs illustrative exercises, or when he is prepared to take the next step. This book is prepared on a plan somewhat different from that followed in most Grammars for schools. There are certain facts of grammar which must be learned before the mastery of other facts becomes possible. But although it is necessary, for example, to know something of the nature of nouns and verbs before beginning to analyze a sentence.
