Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the Preparatory Schools This lack of proper training in the use of English is due largely to two causes; first, the want of some efficient method in the teaching of English and, second, the reluctance shown by our best teachers to engaging in this branch of work. Possi bly the second reason may be the result of the first; possibly it is the result of some inherent prejudice, or some unconfessed doubts as to the dignity of this kind of work. As to these last reasons, it must be acknowledged that, under the existing methods, the work is far from agreeable or inspiring to either teacher or taught, and no teacher can justly be blamed for pre ferring to avoid it whenever possible. The question may well be asked, however, whether this very reluctance is not one main cause why this important branch of work has been so long neglected, and whether, if our best-equipped and most earnest teachers were to apply themselves to a solution of the problem, it would not soon be solved as easily as were numerous other knotty problems in educational methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English for Schools, Colleges, and Private Study One of the most gratifying tokens of progress in the present age is the deep interest that both scholars and people are manifesting in the study of our noble English, originating, it has been well suggested, in an intelligent comprehension of what is good and what is great in national history, national institutions, national character. We have seen this study transferred from the nursery to the college curriculum, while there is an ever increasing class of persons so heterodox as to believe that one may be fairly educated without knowing even Shakespeare's 'small Latin and less Greek, ' and to advocate that English, which hitherto has sat with exceeding humility in the lower seats of the synagogue, should be bidden, universally, to come up higher. 'I may avow, ' says President Eliot, of Harvard, 'as the result of my reading and observation in the matter of education, that I recognize but one mental acquisition as an essential part of a lady or a gentleman - namely, an accurate and a refined use of the mother-tongue.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the Schools It is a thousand years since the great Alfred declared that English children should be taught English, and yet the claims of the mother-tongue are just beginning to be recognized. Mother-tongue is indeed but a poor name to conjure with among English-speaking peoples, whose literary life from infancy to early maturity has been fostered chiefly by the step-mother classic tongues that have usurped control over English schools and English literature. The mother-tongue goes a-begging to school, college, and university for permission to nurse its own offspring. The aptest theme for speakers and writers treating of English study is the neglect of it; for this phrase finds ample illustration both among the people and in the schools. The revival of English study, - revival is the wrong word, - the birth of English study is a thing of to-day, and a small weak thing it is as yet. An inquiry into the status of English in the schools and colleges will show that its gains are noticeable, not because they are anyway commensurate with its demands or deserts, but rather in comparison with the lack of recognition that has been its lot in the past. Any little thing seemed gain alongside of nothing. Its own place in our educational system the English has yet to win. At present the mother-tongue has but found the Archimedean fulcrum-point from which it is to move the English world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation English the Expression of Ideas Two demands, seemingly conflicting, have made a new first-year book in English for high schools a necessity, the first being the demand of the college for better written English on the part of the entering students; the second being the demand of the public for a more democratic distribution of courses than a college preparatory school offers. An examination of the two demands will show, however, that they are after all not diametrically opposed. Right thinking, clear and adequate expression, efficiency, are the reasonable and just demands both of the public and of the college. Neither is concerned with the method of doing the work, so long as desired results are obtained. The demand of the college for efficiency of expression has led to compulsory courses in English in our high schools, with a corresponding increase in the number of hours required for the study. No longer is it felt that only the gifted few can write; it is demanded that all shall write. The demand of the public, on the other hand, has led to the reduction of the elementary courses from nine years to eight, and the introduction into the high schools of the so-called vocational courses. The result has been to increase enormously the size of our first-year classes. These people also must be taught to write. In its way, then, the demand of the college is as utilitarian as the demand of the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Public Latin School A preparatory school should naturally be established before a col lege: so it is not strange that this School antedates Harvard College by two or three years, justifying the remark of a distinguished gradu ate oi both, that the Latin School dandled Harvard College on her knees. From the earliest times the pupils of the one have passed on to the other in a stream whose flow, occasionally narrowed or widened, has never been intermitted; and the names of not a few of the most eminent graduates of the College are borne on the rolls of the School. The Latin School has always been a democratic institution. Its privileges have been confined to no class. The minister's and the tallow-chandler's sons have sat side by side on its forms, and engaged in friendly rivalry in schoolroom and on play-ground, and equally enjoyed its privileges. Its honors have been given for merit. And all have had the same chance to gain them. In establishing this School, our fathers provided at the very beginning a school for teaching the higher branches, instead of one for mere elementary instruction. An interesting article in a volume of the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society shows that the establishment of this school is largely due to John Cotton, who brought to this country a knowledge of the High School which was founded by Philip and Mary in I 554 in Boston, in Lincolnshire, England, in which Latin and Greek were taught. Cotton came to this country in 1633, and was one of the ministers of the First Church. Two years later, the Free School was established; and his will provides that under certain contingencies half his estate should go to Harvard College, and half to the Free School of Boston, which confirms the impression that he was prominent in founding it. A house for the master to live in free of rent, a feature of the English school reproduced here, strengthens this impression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation English the Expression of Ideas As high school teachers we have been slow to arise to the occasion. Our teaching has often been too aca demic; we have copied the college methods without examining them to see whether they were pedagogically sound as high school methods. The consequence has been that we have allowed our classes to drift along, with the burden of real preparation placed on the pupils of the upper classes. Such slipshod work as this not only has failed to prepare classes properly for college, but has left out of account those pupils who are not preparing for college, as well as those who leave school before the course is completed. We are beginning to see, how ever, that English as well as other branches of study can be taught in a definite and logical manner; that the proper time for beginning the work, whether in prepara tion for college or for the world at large, is in the first year; that, sound as college methods may be for the col lege, they may;r not be sound for the high school; that the whole of rhetoric should not be taught in the first year, or in any year, any more than the whole of algebra or the whole of Latin; that a book containing all the prin ciples of rhetoric is, at this early stage, in the highest degree confusing; and that practice under direction is essential to coherent expression.
