Book excerpt: "England's Treasure by Foreign Trade" is the best example of mercantilist commitment to a national project to increase production and wealth through trade. It also most effectively demonstrates the moral value that mercantilists place on such a project. In this book, Mun begins by arguing that trade activities are superior - both economically and morally - to the idle life of landowners who live off rents. In this sense, trade is the path to civilization. 'There is more dignity and financial gains in an Industrious life than in a great inheritance that was wasteth for want of virtue,' he writes. The author of this book concludes by asserting that no currency changes, trade restrictions, or other restrictions will ever prevent the following rule from being followed:'so much Treasure only will be brought in or carried out of a Commonwealth as the Foreign Trade doth over or under balance in value.' Foreign trade is more than just "the sinews of our wars" and "the means of our treasure." It is also referred to as "The School of Our Arts," "The Employment of Our Poor," and "The Improvement of Our Lands." This is why foreign trade must be safeguarded against our adversaries.

Book Synopsis The Currency of Empire by : Jonathan Barth
Download or read book The Currency of Empire written by Jonathan Barth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Currency of Empire, Jonathan Barth explores the intersection of money and power in the early years of North American history, and he shows how the control of money informed English imperial action overseas. The export-oriented mercantile economy promoted by the English Crown, Barth argues, directed the plan for colonization, the regulation of colonial commerce, and the politics of empire. The imperial project required an orderly flow of gold and silver, and thus England's colonial regime required stringent monetary regulation. As Barth shows, money was also a flash point for resistance; many colonists acutely resented their subordinate economic station, desiring for their local economies a robust, secure, and uniform money supply. This placed them immediately at odds with the mercantilist laws of the empire and precipitated an imperial crisis in the 1670s, a full century before the Declaration of Independence. The Currency of Empire examines what were a series of explosive political conflicts in the seventeenth century and demonstrates how the struggle over monetary policy prefigured the patriot reaction to the Stamp Act and so-called Intolerable Acts on the eve of American independence. Thanks to generous funding from the Arizona State University and George Mason University, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other Open Access repositories.
Book Synopsis The Great Rebalancing by : Michael Pettis
Download or read book The Great Rebalancing written by Michael Pettis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How trade imbalances spurred on the global financial crisis and why we aren't out of trouble yet China's economic growth is sputtering, the Euro is under threat, and the United States is combating serious trade disadvantages. Another Great Depression? Not quite. Noted economist and China expert Michael Pettis argues instead that we are undergoing a critical rebalancing of the world economies. Debunking popular misconceptions, Pettis shows that severe trade imbalances spurred on the recent financial crisis and were the result of unfortunate policies that distorted the savings and consumption patterns of certain nations. Pettis examines the reasons behind these destabilizing policies, and he predicts severe economic dislocations that will have long-lasting effects. Demonstrating how economic policies can carry negative repercussions the world over, The Great Rebalancing sheds urgent light on our globally linked economic future.
