Book Synopsis England's Great Transformation by : Marc W. Steinberg
Download or read book England's Great Transformation written by Marc W. Steinberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With England’s Great Transformation, Marc W. Steinberg throws a wrench into our understanding of the English Industrial Revolution, largely revising the thesis at heart of Karl Polanyi’s landmark The Great Transformation. The conventional wisdom has been that in the nineteenth century, England quickly moved toward a modern labor market where workers were free to shift from employer to employer in response to market signals. Expanding on recent historical research, Steinberg finds to the contrary that labor contracts, centered on insidious master-servant laws, allowed employers and legal institutions to work in tandem to keep employees in line. Building his argument on three case studies—the Hanley pottery industry, Hull fisheries, and Redditch needlemakers—Steinberg employs both local and national analyses to emphasize the ways in which these master-servant laws allowed employers to use the criminal prosecutions of workers to maintain control of their labor force. Steinberg provides a fresh perspective on the dynamics of labor control and class power, integrating the complex pathways of Marxism, historical institutionalism, and feminism, and giving readers a subtle yet revelatory new understanding of workplace control and power during England’s Industrial Revolution.

Book Synopsis Law, Politics and Society in Early Modern England by : Christopher W. Brooks
Download or read book Law, Politics and Society in Early Modern England written by Christopher W. Brooks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law, like religion, provided one of the principal discourses through which early-modern English people conceptualised the world in which they lived. Transcending traditional boundaries between social, legal and political history, this innovative and authoritative study examines the development of legal thought and practice from the later middle ages through to the outbreak of the English civil war, and explores the ways in which law mediated and constituted social and economic relationships within the household, the community, and the state at all levels. By arguing that English common law was essentially the creation of the wider community, it challenges many current assumptions and opens new perspectives about how early-modern society should be understood. Its magisterial scope and lucid exposition will make it essential reading for those interested in subjects ranging from high politics and constitutional theory to the history of the family, as well as the history of law.

Book Synopsis The Law of Treason in England in the Later Middle Ages by : J. G. Bellamy
Download or read book The Law of Treason in England in the Later Middle Ages written by J. G. Bellamy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Bellamy places the theory of treason in its political setting and analyses the part it played in the development of legal and political thought in this period. He pays particular attention to the Statute of Treason of 1352, an act with a notable effect on later constitutional history and which, in the opinion of Edward Coke, had a legal importance second only to that of Magna Carta. He traces the English law of treason to Roman and Germanic origins, and discusses the development of royal attitudes towards rebellion, the judicial procedures used to try and condemn suspected traitors, and the interaction of the law of treason and constitutional ideas.
