This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through South Africa With the British Association During the course of the trip described in these pages I kept a fragmentary diary of the chief events as they occurred. I also wrote letters home, descriptive of those details of the journey which I thought would interest my family. On my return it was suggested that I should combine the diary and the letters into a more complete story of what had been a most interesting and unique trip. This I have attempted to do in the following pages. At intervals I have added certain re ections that were impressed upon me during the journey, when the incidents that brought them up were fresh in my mind. For any Opinions so expressed I am alone responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Years in South Africa: Only Complete and Authentic History of the British German Legion in South Africa and the East Indies We thanked him very much for his kindness, and af ter receiving the above articles we made haste to put as much space between ourselves and this farmer as possible. Late in the evening we reached a city and pretty soon we made ourselves comfortable in a tavern usually frequented by men of our style. In a few hours there came two more wandering mechanics, like ourselves, into the tavern, who complained loudly of the way they had been abused and their clothes ruined by dogs upon the premises of a farmer, be cause some other tramps had spoilt his rubber boots by pouring pea soup into them. We of course knew all about it, but were smart enough not to say anything. Occasionally I would strike a town and ask for work, and I may say that I never had any trouble getting work. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of British South Africa In this book I have tried to describe in a simple way the main geographical features of British South Africa. In doing so it is impossible to avoid altogether the history of past quarrels, but in mentioning them I have endeavoured to be fair, and to keep clear of political controversies which are still hot. I have not thought it wise to go into any statistics. These pass out of date almost as speedily as they slip from the memory. But the physical features of the land, its climate and resources, the character of its inhabitants, its flora and fauna, its industries and occupations are more or less abiding. To these I have given most space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The increasing luxury and the rise in the price of the necessities of life drove our public men to seek sources of revenue which their forefathers would have scorned. The sale of public offices, of seats in Parliament, and of influence, had created a system of jobbery so gigantic that it is to-day almost impossible to appreciate its far-reaching effects. The Paymaster of the Forces thought it no disgrace to use hundreds of thousands of pounds Of the public money for private ends; Ministers did not Shrink from Open bribery, from receiving fees and percentages, and from sharing the profit on contracts of every kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lost Legionary in South Africa Before saying anything about this present work I think it is my bounden duty to tender my hearty and sincere thanks to the innumerable critics, both British and Colonial, who so unanimously reviewed my first attempt at literature, With the Lost Legion in New Zealand, with a kindness that has greatly surprised me and in a manner, so obviously to myself, closing their eyes to the manifold faults in the work and most probably actuated by their sportsmanlike wishes to help a worn-out old war dog along the rough road of his declining years, have held out a helping hand, tried to lighten his swag and cheer him along the line of march by making the most of the few good things in his book and treating with leniency its many failings. I hereby again gratefully thank the members of the Press and many of my old comrades for their generous sympathy and warm support. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of South Africa The new rulers of the Cape soon found themselves at loggerheads with the colonists - not only with the old-established Dutch burghers, who naturally had no sym pathy with the regime, but also with the British settlers who were now streaming into the country. The Albany settlers of 1820, who had been accustomed in England and Scotland to relatively democratic institutions, were in no mood to submit to the dictates of autocratic governors; and, after an heroic struggle to establish themselves in the new land, many of them played an important part in a prolonged agitation for freedom of the Press and representative institutions - demands which the government was forced to concede, inch by inch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain's Title in South Africa: Or the Story of Cape Colony to the Days of the Great Trek This work, although now cast into the form of an independent history, was originally only a review of the important points in Dr. Theal's representation of British rule in Cape Colony, and part of a series of lectures delivered at a conference of Alumni. I have, however, developed the topics sufficiently to present a connected view of the political history of the colony from its occupation by the British to the time of the great trek. Download or read book South Africa, Vol. 6 written by A. Wyatt Tilby and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Africa, Vol. 6: 1486-1913 The present volume brings to a close the first part of this history of the English People Overseas. It is my intention, or at least my hope, that at some future date I may be able to justify more completely the title of this work by adding, to these already issued, other volumes recording the growth of the English people in the United States - still the greatest of all English colonies - in Canada from 1867 to the present day, and in India since 1828, the period at which the second volume of this book concludes. The fulfilment of so considerable an undertaking must inevitably occupy several years, but I cannot help thinking that it will be worth while to have a complete record in one easily accessible work of the activities of the English people in all parts of the world, (I may say in parenthesis, and in answer to certain critical inquiries from Scotland, that I have used the term English throughout, not from any desire to disparage our masters north of the Twood, but as indicating English-speaking - a habit to which the best of Scots must plead guilty. The term English may in this sense be applied to the United States, whereas British would be entirely out of place; nor am I conscious of having done any injustice to Scottish enterprise within the limits of the British Empire, or anywhere outside the title of this book.
