Book Synopsis Civil Engineering Materials by : Peter A. Claisse
Download or read book Civil Engineering Materials written by Peter A. Claisse and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil Engineering Materials explains why construction materials behave the way they do. It covers the construction materials content for undergraduate courses in civil engineering and related subjects and serves as a valuable reference for professionals working in the construction industry. The book concentrates on demonstrating methods to obtain, analyse and use information rather than focusing on presenting large amounts of data. Beginning with basic properties of materials, it moves on to more complex areas such as the theory of concrete durability and corrosion of steel. - Discusses the broad scope of traditional, emerging, and non-structural materials - Explains what material properties such as specific heat, thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity are and how they can be used to calculate the performance of construction materials. - Contains numerous worked examples with detailed solutions that provide precise references to the relevant equations in the text. - Includes a detailed section on how to write reports as well as a full section on how to use and interpret publications, giving students and early career professionals valuable practical guidance.

Book Synopsis Engineering Materials for Efficient Energy Storage and Conversion by : Shukla, Anoop Kumar
Download or read book Engineering Materials for Efficient Energy Storage and Conversion written by Shukla, Anoop Kumar and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world grapples with the transition to sustainable energy sources, the demand for materials with high-performance electrodes, electrolytes, and catalysts has become paramount. The energy transition necessitates materials with increased energy and power density for advanced energy storage devices, while the emergence of future fuels like hydrogen requires economically viable electrocatalysts for mass production. In response to these challenges, Engineering Materials for Efficient Energy Storage and Conversion addresses these pressing concerns through an interdisciplinary lens that combines materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Within the pages of Engineering Materials for Efficient Energy Storage and Conversion, a comprehensive exploration unfolds, delving into cutting-edge R&D in energy technologies. The book takes a deep dive into critical areas such as fuel cells, thermal battery materials, hydrogen storage, and materials for thermal management. By providing in-depth insights into the electrochemical, physicochemical, and structural aspects of energy technologies, the book aims to advance functional materials and devices crucial for the sustainable future of energy storage and conversion. This compendium not only presents theoretical frameworks but also offers the latest empirical research findings, contributing significantly to the evolution of the field.

Book Synopsis Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications by : National Research Council
Download or read book Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armor plays a significant role in the protection of warriors. During the course of history, the introduction of new materials and improvements in the materials already used to construct armor has led to better protection and a reduction in the weight of the armor. But even with such advances in materials, the weight of the armor required to manage threats of ever-increasing destructive capability presents a huge challenge. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications explores the current theoretical and experimental understanding of the key issues surrounding protection materials, identifies the major challenges and technical gaps for developing the future generation of lightweight protection materials, and recommends a path forward for their development. It examines multiscale shockwave energy transfer mechanisms and experimental approaches for their characterization over short timescales, as well as multiscale modeling techniques to predict mechanisms for dissipating energy. The report also considers exemplary threats and design philosophy for the three key applications of armor systems: (1) personnel protection, including body armor and helmets, (2) vehicle armor, and (3) transparent armor. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications recommends that the Department of Defense (DoD) establish a defense initiative for protection materials by design (PMD), with associated funding lines for basic and applied research. The PMD initiative should include a combination of computational, experimental, and materials testing, characterization, and processing research conducted by government, industry, and academia.
