Download or read book The Science and Applications of Synthetic and Systems Biology written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many potential applications of synthetic and systems biology are relevant to the challenges associated with the detection, surveillance, and responses to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. On March 14 and 15, 2011, the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Forum on Microbial Threats convened a public workshop in Washington, DC, to explore the current state of the science of synthetic biology, including its dependency on systems biology; discussed the different approaches that scientists are taking to engineer, or reengineer, biological systems; and discussed how the tools and approaches of synthetic and systems biology were being applied to mitigate the risks associated with emerging infectious diseases. The Science and Applications of Synthetic and Systems Biology is organized into sections as a topic-by-topic distillation of the presentations and discussions that took place at the workshop. Its purpose is to present information from relevant experience, to delineate a range of pivotal issues and their respective challenges, and to offer differing perspectives on the topic as discussed and described by the workshop participants. This report also includes a collection of individually authored papers and commentary.

Download or read book Cell-Free Protein Expression written by James R. Swartz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell-free protein synthesis is coming of age! Motivated by an escalating need for efficient protein synthesis and empowered by readily accessible cell-free protein synthesis kits, the technology is expanding both in the range of feasible proteins and in the ways that proteins can be labeled and modified. This volume follows "Cell-Free Translation Systems", edited by Professor Alexander S. Spirin in 2002. Since then, an impressive collection of new work has emerged that demonstrates a substantial expansion of capability. In this volume, we show that proteins now can be efficiently produced using PCR products as DNA templates and that even membrane proteins and proteins with multiple disulfide proteins are obtained at high yields. Many additional advances are also presented. It is an exciting time for protein synthesis technology.

Book Synopsis Ribosomes Structure, Function, and Dynamics by : Marina V. Rodnina
Download or read book Ribosomes Structure, Function, and Dynamics written by Marina V. Rodnina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ribosome is a macromolecular machine that synthesizes proteins with a high degree of speed and accuracy. Our present understanding of its structure, function and dynamics is the result of six decades of research. This book collects over 40 articles based on the talks presented at the 2010 Ribosome Meeting, held in Orvieto, Italy, covering all facets of the structure and function of the ribosome. New high-resolution crystal structures of functional ribosome complexes and cryo-EM structures of translating ribosomes are presented, while partial reactions of translation are examined in structural and mechanistic detail, featuring translocation as a most dynamic process. Mechanisms of initiation, both in bacterial and eukaryotic systems, translation termination, and novel details of the functions of the respective factors are described. Structure and interactions of the nascent peptide within, and emerging from, the ribosomal peptide exit tunnel are addressed in several articles. Structural and single-molecule studies reveal a picture of the ribosome exhibiting the energy landscape of a processive Brownian machine. The collection provides up-to-date reviews which will serve as a source of essential information for years to come.

Download or read book RNA written by Henrik Nielsen and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent insight into the transcripts generated from the mammalian genome (i.e. the transcriptome) has revealed that transcription is a far more complex phenomenon than previously thought. In RNA: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers provide the procedures and methods used to describe the structure of messenger RNAs and non-coding RNAs that are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as the immediate gene products in mammalian cells. Focused on the structure of the RNA products of “gene X” and the mapping of proteins associated with these RNAs, the volume presents appropriate information for non-specialists in RNA biology. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, many chapters contain introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and practical, RNA: Methods and Protocols views the transcriptional landscape with an appreciation for the role that proteins play in the processing and interpretation of genetic information in an attempt to further our crucial knowledge of the many products and sophisticated regulatory networks that result from it.
Book Synopsis Minimal Cells: Design, Construction, Biotechnological Applications by : Alvaro R. Lara
Download or read book Minimal Cells: Design, Construction, Biotechnological Applications written by Alvaro R. Lara and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the design, generation and characterization of minimal cell systems. Written by leading experts, it presents an in-depth analysis of the current issues and challenges in the field, including recent advances in the generation and characterization of reduced-genome strains generated from model organisms with relevance in biotechnology, and basic research such as Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium glutamicum and yeast. It also discusses methodologies, such as bottom-up and top-down genome minimization strategies, as well as novel analytical and experimental approaches to characterize and generate minimal cells. Lastly, it presents the latest research related to minimal cells of serveral microorganisms, e.g. Bacillus subtilis. The design of biological systems for biotechnological purposes employs strategies aimed at optimizing specific tasks. This approach is based on enhancing certain biological functions while reducing other capacities that are not required or that could be detrimental to the desired objective. A highly optimized cell factory would be expected to have only the capacity for reproduction and for performing the expected task. Such a hypothetical organism would be considered a minimal cell. At present, numerous research groups in academia and industry are exploring the theoretical and practical implications of constructing and using minimal cells and are providing valuable fundamental insights into the characteristics of minimal genomes, leading to an understanding of the essential gene set. In addition, research in this field is providing valuable information on the physiology of minimal cells and their utilization as a biological chassis to which useful biotechnological functions can be added.
