Book excerpt: The Paris Climate Change Agreement has necessitated the global energy transition, whose goal is to ensure environmental sustainability within the context of green house gas emissions mitigation, in order to arrest the global warming threat. Energy transition has occurred in the past, but developed organically, from biomass, whale oil, coal and to oil and gas. Another energy transition is on, this time, to renewable energy. While previous transitions were driven by price and availability, the current one is driven mainly by climate change and energy security concerns. This book, complete with references, in-text citations and weblinks, discusses the renewable and non-renewable energy transition from fossil fuel, as well as the much needed strategies, technological innovations and policies, which are required to make the switch not only to renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydropower and biofuels, but also to non renewables like hydrogen, geothermal energy and nuclear power, including mitigation technologies such as energy efficiency, carbon capture and storage, electric vehicles deployment and afforestation for natural carbon sequestration. The investments of big energy players in these sectors are also discussed. A full chapter is dedicated to the life cycle environmental impacts of all the renewable energy and low carbon non renewable sources and mitigation technologies in order to draw the reader's attention to the environmental footprints of 'clean' energy, including certain levels of GHG emissions. The Kyoto Protocol established two project-based mechanisms, the Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and one trading mechanism, the Emission Trading Mechanism. The CDM allows developed nations, to invest in, and develop emission reduction projects in developing nations, in order to facilitate sustainable development in the host nations, while offsetting investing nation carbon emissions. The JI projects enables developed nation's parties to execute similar projects, in other developed nations that are signatories to the protocol, resulting in excess emissions offsets of investing parties. Thirdly, the Emissions Trading Mechanism platform (ETM) was introduced in order to promote annually assigned emissions trading, saved by protocol members, to those that have exceeded their limits. The GHG as defined by the Kyoto protocol (UNFCCC, 2008), include, in addition to CO2, CH4 (methane), N2O (nitrous oxide), HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons), PFCs (perfluorocarbons) and SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride). Of the 55.3 GtCO2e of total GHG emitted in 2018, CO2 from fossil fuel due to energy production and industrialization, contributed 37.5 GtCO2 (UNEP, 2019), with energy production taking the lead - an increase of 2% as against 1.5% in the past decade for both total GHG and fossil fuel CO2. The IPCC recommends a 1.5 °C global warming limit mitigation as against current levels. So far, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and reforestation, has been responsible for most emission reductions. It is important to make use of the full spectrum of renewables and carbon free/low carbon non renewables, already mentioned along with appropriate strategies and policies. They won't work in isolation, but in tandem with each other where feasible, and have to be governed and directed by appropriate policies and strategies. Furthermore, although the initial start of energy transition in a society might be expensive, with continuous usage, cost drops, effective efficiency is achieved and best of all, environmental sustainability is practiced.
