Book excerpt: This book addresses the design and analysis of Error Control Codes (ECC) and modulation techniques for energy efficient wireless sensor networks. It examines the advantages of choosing right ECC -Modulation pair to optimise the energy saving during the operation of a wireless sensor node. In this book, a system-level methodology is presented for exploring various ECCs with different modulation schemes while taking into account the transmit signal energy, the circuit energy, the encoder energy, as well as the decoder energy of a wireless sensor network node. Based on the energy tradeoffs between radio and computation functions, we find an energy-optimal ECC that reduces node energy consumption and hence increases the wireless sensor node battery life. In this book, a methodology for exploring various ECCs based on their energy consumption for sensor nodes have been proposed. For this exploration, an integrated framework that computes the radio energy, as well as the computation energy, has been built. Various configurations of Hamming codes, RS codes, and CCs have been explored.

Book excerpt: The combination of Space-Time (ST) coding and Continuous-Phase Modulation (CPM) produces a low power, energy efficient communication scheme suitable for wireless transmission. Space-time coding increases the reliability of transmission, and continuous-phase modulation (CPM) has the potential to provide considerable energy savings. CPM is a modulation technique that involves the transmission of a signal with continuous-phase and a constant envelope, where the continuous-phase property produces a very bandwidth efficient signal, and the constant-envelope property enables non linear (and thus energy efficient) signal amplification. The ST-CPM code is of special interest for wireless sensors because in the wireless sensor network environment energy consumption is highly constrained. The combination of ST codes and CPM is non-trivial and thus ST-CPM codes based upon block-based orthogonal and diagonal signal matrices are presented. These codes are forms the basis of a distributed ST-CPM code. The distributed ST codes are designed to operate in wireless networks containing a large set of nodes, of which only a small a priori unknown subset will be active at any time. The devised distributed ST-CPM scheme combines the ST-CPM code with a diagonal signaling matrix, (commonly assigned to all relay nodes) with signature vectors(uniquely assigned to nodes). The energy consumption of the proposed distributed ST-CPM scheme is compared with that of a distributed ST linear modulation (LM) scheme. The distributed ST-CPM scheme is shown to outperform the distributed ST-LM scheme for all but short-range transmission. Finally, a serially concatenated code for ST-CPM is proposed. The concatenated code consists of the diagonal signalling matrix as the inner code, and a class of double parity check (DPC) codes as the outer code. The resulting concatenated codes that are formed from the ST-CPM code and a DPC code are shown to provide performance close to capacity, and to provide performanc.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to develop a framework of transmission timing-based modulation framework for improving energy efficiency, security, and information transfer capacity in embedded wireless networks with very thin energy budgets. The key idea is to modulate both intra-PDU (Protocol Data Unit) and inter-PDU timing for addressing energy, security, and information transfer capacity in wireless embedded networks. As for energy efficiency, we developed a novel pulse position-coded PDU (PPCP) paradigm. The core idea is to encode a protocol data unit (PDU) in terms of the silence duration between two sets of delimiter pulses, whose positions are modulated based on the value of the PDU. This PPCP architecture achieves significant energy savings by using a lesser amount of bit/pulse transmissions, and by eliminating long multi-bit preambles and headers, which are normally used in traditional packets. The proposed multi-access pulse-based PDU scheme enables medium sharing among many sensor nodes without requiring per-PDU frame synchronization. As for security, we developed the concept of a novel chaotic pulse position coded protocol data unit (CPPCP) for secure embedded networking. The core idea of CPPCP is to encode a protocol data unit (PDU) with a wideband pulse train with chaotically-varied inter-pulse intervals. The architecture ensures communication security by introducing randomness between data symbols, noise-like frequency spectrum, and significant energy savings by using a smaller number of pulse transmissions compared to existing secure coding schemes such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Compared with the traditional key-based cryptographic techniques, CPPCP suppresses decipherable information by eliminating symbol periodicity. The mechanism can also be piggy-backed on traditional cryptography solutions to achieve higher levels of security. Finally, for enhancing the information transfer capacity, we developed a data packet position modulation (DPPM) paradigm. Packet transmissions in low duty cycle networks are often scheduled as TDMA slots, whose periodicity is determined based on application sampling requirements and the energy in-flow, often in the form of energy harvesting. The key idea of DPPM is to modulate the inter-packet spacing for coding additional information without incurring additional transmission energy expenditures. We first developed a have a DPPM based networking solution for single-hop transmit-only networks in which a number of low-energy nodes transmit data to an aggregator. The architecture is developed for a two-node point-to-point link, followed by a multipoint-to-point multi-access network. Detailed analytical and simulation models are developed to demonstrate the performance of a symmetric and an asymmetric version of DPPM.
