Book excerpt: This paper studies the intertemporal relationships among population growth, income distribution, inter-generational social mobility, skill composition of the labor force, and household income in an overlapping generations general equilibrium model that aggregates household decisions regarding fertility, savings and investment in human capital of children. It shows that as a consequence of endogenous fertility, the equilibrium path attains steady state from the second generation. Income tax transfer, child taxation, and social security taxation policies that can be devised to affect these variables are also analyzed. The model provides a structural explanation for the inverse household income-child quantity and negative child quality-quantity relationships that are observed in developing countries. It also shows that group interests may hinder the emergence of perfect capital markets with private initiatives.

Survival rates for children and adults are incorporated into an overlapping generations model featuring endogenous fertility and altruism from workers towards their retired parents. The main nding is that a simultaneous increase in child and adult survival decreases fertility and increases savings and productivity growth. The analysis illustrates the key role of health in the demographic transition.

The economy is comprised of overlapping generations of rational and identical individuals and identical competitive firms producing with a constant-returns-to-scale technology with no externalities. From a theoretical perspective, the distinguishing feature of this work is that endogenous fertility per se is able to explain the existence of low and high development regimes. It provides alternative reasons (history driven or expectations driven) why some countries enter development trajectories with high GDP and low fertility and others experience under-performances with low GDP and high fertility. The model is also able to reproduce fertility fluctuations and explain the baby busts and baby booms observed in the last century in some developed countries.

Parents receive utility from the quantity and quality of their offspring. An increase in the wage rate leads to higher opportunity costs of child-rearing time, thus implying lower fertility and higher quality per child. This causes intergenerational persistence in fertility decisions and wages. Controlling for the initial distribution of wealth, we show that economic growth increases inequality and fertility differentials. Furthermore, we endogenize redistribution by implementing a median voter system. Due to fertility differentials, the median voter moves from higher to lower income percentiles.

There is an endogenous population of reproductive agents who belong to dynastic families of overlapping generations connected through altruism. In addition to choosing savings and births, parents may reduce (infant) deaths by incurring expenditures on health-care which is also provided by the government. A generalised production technology accounts for long-run endogenous growth with short-run transitional dynamics. The analysis yields testable time series and cross-section implications which accord with the empirical evidence on the relationship between demography and development.

Book excerpt: We developed the Overlapping Generations model based on the endogenous growth theory, incorporating Human Capital Stock and conducted some simulations under the alternative population growth patterns and some sensitivity analysis with respect to some key parameters. The main results are as follows: 1) the endogenously determined growth rate of human capital offsets the negative population growth rates. 2) the individual has an incentive to allocate his/her time into schooling investment for accumulating his/her human capital in the phase of declining population growth. 3) there is a negative correlation between the growth rate of labor supply and human capital.

Book excerpt: We re-examine the issue of optimal population in the basic overlapping generations model of neoclassical growth with endogenous fertility and time cost of children in both closed and small open economies. In the former case, we show that the golden rule of population growth can be achieved by a benevolent government in a market setting whose purpose is to maximize the steady-state individual lifetime welfare, using either a child subsidy or a child tax. In the latter case, the child subsidy (tax) can be used as an exclusive instrument to replicate the command optimum.

Book excerpt: Using an endogenous-growth, overlapping-generations framework in which human capital is the engine of growth, we trace the dynamic evolution of income and fertility distributions and their interdependencies over three endogenous phases of economic development. In our model, heterogeneous families determine fertility and children's human capital, and generations are linked via parental altruism and social interactions. We derive and test discriminating propositions concerning the dynamic behavior of inequalities in fertility, educational attainments, and three endogenous income inequality measures - family-income inequality, income-group inequality, and the Gini coefficient. In this context, we also reexamine the Kuznets hypothesis concerning the relation between income growth and inequality.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the interrelationship between capital accumulation, fertility, and growth by introducing an endogenous fertility decision into Diamond's (1965) neoclassical growth model. Under the assumptions that children provide old age support and that individuals incur a variable time cost of raising children, it investigates the potential for cyclical fluctuations in the capital-labor ratio and fertility, as well as for development trap phenomena to be observed. It is shown that when capital and labor are highly substitutable in production, there is a unique steady state equilibrium, and either damped or undamped oscillations in fertility and the capital-labor ratio may occur. However, when the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor is less than one, two steady state equilibria may exist: one with a high capital-labor ratio and a high rate of population growth, and the other with a lower capital-labor ratio as well as a lower population growth rate. The former is a saddle, while the latter may be either a source or a sink. In the latter case development traps are possible.

Book excerpt: In the second half of the 20th century, most industrialized countries experienced declining fertility, rising life expectancy and a slowdown of population growth. Standard models of R&D-based growth predict that a decline in population growth reduces economic growth. We argue that this implication hinges on the assumption of infinitely lived individuals. The semi-endogenous growth model with overlapping generations that we propose implies a negative relationship between population growth and economic growth during a substantial part of the transitional dynamics if the decline in population growth is accompanied by an increase in life expectancy as observed in industrialized countries.
