Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the Lagoa Santa Karst, which has been internationally known since the pioneering studies of the Danish naturalist Peter Lund in the early 1800s. It covers the speleogenesis, geology, vegetation, fauna, hydrogeology, geomorphology, and anthropogenic use of the Lagoa Santa Karst and is the first English-language book on this major karst area. The area, which has been at the heart of the debate on the origin and age of human colonization in the Americas, is characterized by a classical and scenic karst landscape with limestone cliffs, karst lakes and karst plains, in addition to numerous solution dolines. More than 1,000 caves have been documented in the area, many with significant archeological and paleontological value. Despite its great importance, the Lagoa Santa Karst faces severe environmental threats due to limestone mining and the expansion of the metropolis of Belo Horizonte and its surrounding towns. The growing recognition of the area’s remarkable significance has led to increasing concern, and a number of protected areas have now been established, improving the conservation status of this landmark karst area.

Book excerpt: Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, especially in developed countries where the knowledge and resources are available to (at least potentially) provide better management systems for farm animals, as well as companion, zoo and laboratory animals. The key requirements for adequate food, water, a suitable environment, appropriate companionship and good health are important for animals kept for all of these purposes. There has been increased attention given to farm animal welfare in many co- tries in recent years. This derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of nancial reward and ef ciency, to satisfy market demands, has led to the devel- ment of intensive animal production systems that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries. In developing countries, human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that p- vision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human needs. Animal welfare is usually a priority only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In principle the welfare needs of both humans and animals can be provided for, in both developing and developed countries, if resources are properly husbanded. In reality, however, the inequitable division of the world’s riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and a- mals alike in many parts of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We have been living on the edge of a small village in the south of Portugal for over nine years. Sometimes, in the stress of the irregular hours and eccentric episodes that make up our life here, we ask ourselves how it all began, simply to find a culprit . . ." Under the Bright Wings tells the story of a pioneering work in the beautiful but ravaged Portuguese Algarve. Keenly aware of their Christian responsibility for the environment and towards their neighbours, Peter and Miranda Harris learn from scratch about cross-cultural evangelism, community living and conservation. The A Rocha Christian Field Study Centre and Bird Observatory has now welcomed hundreds of visitors from all over the world. Lavishly illustrated with evocative line drawings, this is a refreshing, honest and humorous look at how the gospel makes a practical difference to conservation. "In the developing ministry of A Rocha an exciting, contemporary form of Christian mission has come alive." (The Rev Dr. John Stott) "A remarkable commitment to conservation, a joyful appreciation of Portugal's wildlife and a deep sense of community: read this book." (Tim Cleeves, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds)

Book excerpt: The creation of Dolly the sheep in the 1990s was for many people the start of a new era: the age of genetically modified animals. However, the idea was not new for in the 1920s an amateur scientist, Hans Duncker, decided to genetically engineer a red canary. Though his experiments failed, they paved the way for others to succeed when it was recognised that the canary needed to be both a product of nature and nurture. This highly original narrative, of huge contemporary relevance, reveals how the obsession with turning the wild canary from green to red heralded the exciting but controversial developments in genetic manipulation.

Book excerpt: Aromatherapy as a form of healing has been around for thousands of years. However, mention the words 'essential oil' to a parrot owner and they are inclined to grab their precious bird and run! But in 'Aromatherapy for Parrots,' the author shows that aromatherapy can indeed be safe for companion birds as long as one is given the right tools. She explains the therapeutic power of pure essential oils and how they have helped parrots around the world with problems including such things as feather destructive behavior and relief from PDD symptoms.

It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions. The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it is intended as a conservation tool, a provider of baseline information to measure conservation progress and as a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.
