Download or read book Freshwater Ecology and Conservation written by Jocelyne Hughes and published by Techniques in Ecology & Conservation. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical manual of freshwater ecology and conservation provides a state-of-the-art review of the approaches and techniques used to measure, monitor, and conserve freshwater ecosystems. It offers a single, comprehensive, and accessible synthesis of the vast amount of literature for freshwater ecology and conservation that is currently dispersed in manuals, toolkits, journals, handbooks, 'grey' literature, and websites. Successful conservation outcomes are ultimately built on a sound ecological framework in which every species must be assessed and understood at the individual, community, catchment and landscape level of interaction. For example, freshwater ecologists need to understand hydrochemical storages and fluxes, the physical systems influencing freshwaters at the catchment and landscape scale, and the spatial and temporal processes that maintain species assemblages and their dynamics. A thorough understanding of all these varied processes, and the techniques for studying them, is essential for the effective conservation and management of freshwater ecosystems.

Book Synopsis The Codex of the Endangered Species Act, Volume II by : John F. Organ

This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is one of the most cherished and reviled laws ever passed. It mandates protection and preservation of all the nation’s species and biodiversity, whatever the cost. It has been a lightning rod for controversy and conflicts between industry/business and environmentalists. In this volume, leading Endangered Species Act experts interpret and propose legislative and administrative changes to prepare the ESA for future challenges. They explore regulations on avoiding harm to and producing benefits for species, cooperation between state and federal agencies, scientific analyses, and the necessary politics to enact their ideas. This is a call to action to chart an enlightened future for the Endangered Species Act that embraces the nation’s moral commitment of 50 years ago to address species extinction constructively, mindful of biodiversity, and as a fixture among the nation’s values and needs. The interconnected web of life includes all living species that depend on each other for survival, us among them. The stakes—our very future—are too high to ignore.
Book Synopsis Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River by : National Research Council
Download or read book Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between wildlife protection under the Endangered Species Act and water management in the Platte River Basin has existed for more than 25 years. The Platte River provides important habitat for migratory and breeding birds, including three endangered or threatened species: the whooping crane, the northern Great Plains population of the piping plover, and the interior least tern. The leading factors attributed to the decline of the cranes are historical overhunting and widespread habitat destruction and, for the plovers and terns, human interference during nesting and the loss of riverine nesting sites in open sandy areas that have been replaced with woodlands, sand and gravel mines, housing, and roadways. Extensive damming has disrupted passage of the endangered pallid sturgeon and resulted in less suitable habitat conditions such as cooler stream flows, less turbid waters, and inconsistent flow regimes. Commercial harvesting, now illegal, also contributed to the decline of the sturgeon. Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River addresses the habitat requirements for these federally protected species. The book further examines the scientific aspects of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's instream-flow recommendations and habitat suitability guidelines and assesses the science concerning the connections among the physical systems of the river as they relate to species' habitats.

Book Synopsis Endangered Species by : Danny C. Reinke
Download or read book Endangered Species written by Danny C. Reinke and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endangered Species: Legal Requirements and Policy Guidance was developed as a tool to assist environmentalists in the use of existing source materials related to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), and to help them better understand what is expected and required for ESA and MMPA compliance. The book contains an introduction and overview of the threatened and endangered species programs, the statutes and applicable regulations, guidance memoranda, an excerpt from the Interagency Consultation Handbook, and a summary of selected precedent-setting or recent legal cases that interpret the ESA and MMPA and implementing regulations. The guide also contains definitions of numerous terms and a cross-index to trace particular issues throughout all of the source materials. The official documents are presented without editing of content or format, allowing one to follow an issue(s) through the laws, regulations, guidance, and court cases. This tool allows a student or an environmental professional to quickly and efficiently pull together all of the official guidance on a large number of common and some not-so-common endangered species issues. Available in both book and CD format.
Book Synopsis The Endangered Species Act by : Harold B. Carleton
Download or read book The Endangered Species Act written by Harold B. Carleton and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Endangered Species Act (ESA) protects species identified as endangered or threatened with extinction and attempts to protect the habitat on which they depend. It is administered primarily by the Fish and Wildlife Service and also by the National Marine Fisheries Service for certain marine and anadromous species. Dwindling species are listed as either endangered or threatened according to assessments of the risk of their extinction. Once a species is listed, legal tools are available to aid its recovery and to protect its habitat. The ESA can become the visible focal point for underlying situations involving the allocation of scarce or diminishing lands or resources, especially in instances where societal values may be changing, such as for the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the waters in the Klamath River Basin, or the polar environment. This book discusses the major provisions of the ESA, both domestic and international, and also discusses some of the background issues, such as extinction in general, and the effectiveness of the statute.
