Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other family, the Verney's - a dynasty of Buckinghamshire squires - embody the tragic conflicts and divided loyalties of the English Civil War. The family patriarch, Sir Edmund Verney, was a courtier and former close friend of King Charles I, even accompanying Charles on his fruitless marriage mission to Madrid when he attempted to woo the Spanish Infanta. However, as MP for Wycombe, Verney often found himself in opposition to Royal policy - and as a staunch Protestant particularly deplored Charles' devotion to High Anglicanism and Bishops. However, when the push of Parliamentary politics came to the shove of Civil War, Verney reluctantly placed his loyalty to the Crown above his conscience, telling a friend: 'For my part I do not like the quarrel and do heartily wish that the King would yield and consent to what they [Parliament] desire... [but] I have eaten his bread and served him near thirty years, and will not do so base a thing as to forsake him; and choose rather to lose my Life (which I am sure I shall do) to preserve and defend those things, which are against my conscience to preserve and defend'. Sure enough, in accordance with his own prophecy Verney did die in the Civil War's first battle, Edgehill. According to legend, he defended the Royal Standard so stoutly that his severed hand was found still clutching it after the battle. Verney's eldest son and heir, Sir Ralph, also an MP, was a stout Parliamentarian; but his younger brother, Edmund junior. was a passionate Royalist who died at the hands of Cromwell's troops in the massacre that followed the storming of Drogheda in Ireland. This two-volume family history, published in 1892, and much drawn upon by Civil War historians, tells the story of the conflicted family's fortunes - and the tragic wounds inflicted on close families who find themselves 'by the sword divided'.

Book excerpt: In Modern China and the West: Translation and Cultural Mediation, the authors investigate the significant role translation plays in the act of cultural mediation. They pay attention to transnational organizations that bring about cross-cultural interactions as well as regulating authorities, in the form of both nation-states and ideologies, which dictate what, and even how, to translate. Under such circumstances, is there room for individual translators or mediators to exercise their free will? To what extent are they allowed to do so? The authors see translation as a "shaping force." While intending to shape, or reshape, certain concepts through the translating act, translators and cultural actors need to negotiate among multifarious institutional powers that coexist, including traditional and foreign. Contributors include: Françoise Kreissler, Angel Pino, Shan Te-hsing, Nicolai Volland, Joyce C. H. Liu, Huang Ko-wu, Isabelle Rabut, Xiaomei Chen, Zhang Yinde, Peng Hsiao-yen, Sebastian Hsien-hao Liao, and Pin-chia Feng.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eve's Diary illustrated Mark Twain - This story puts a new twist on a very old story: the story of Adam and Eve from the Bible. In the Bible story, Eve, the first woman, is created as a partner for Adam, the first man. When she tempts Adam into eating forbidden fruit, they are thrown out of the garden of Eden. Twain's story, however, is from Eve's point of view. It paints a picture of her as fully independent with likes, dislikes, joys, and sorrows. She is separate from Adam, and the story follows as she discovers him and eventually falls in love. Twain takes the original Adam and Eve story and puts Eve in a positive light, showing her as a complete person. Eve's Diary (1906) is one of Twain's best stories, in which he addresses gender equity issues, using his iconic wit and satire. We mention this story in The Unreliable Narrator as a "Reliable Narrator" in contrast with Extracts from Adam's Diary. On the first day of her existence in the Garden of Eden, Eve begins her diary, believing herself to be part of a great experiment. Eve demonstrates a profound appreciation of and curiosity about her surroundings and attempts to win the affection of the insensitive Adam. The two remain together after being expelled from the Garden, and after Eve's death, Adam reflects that Eden existed wherever Eve did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of more than forty years of intimate contact with the 'religious elite' of the Far East, Dr. Reichelt's book is a study of a too-often remote and unknown world. For the western reader this study reveals the life of the East Asia religious communities, their sanctuaries, sacred writings and daily discipline. These non-Christian religions present a massive front of tradition and dogma, which so far the Christian faith has rarely penetrated. This engaging book is comprehensive in its scope. The author examines the meditation traditions of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and Yoga in detail, drawing on his first-hand experiences. Karl Ludvig Reichelt was one of the few gifted interpreters of the East to the West, who knew the mind of the East Asia religions, and had the respect of their leaders.

Book excerpt: This important volume affords a panoramic view of local elites during the dramatic changes of late imperial and Republic China. Eleven specialists present fresh, detailed studies of subjects ranging from cultivated upper gentry to twentieth-century militarists, from wealthy urban merchants to village leaders. In the introduction and conclusion the editors reassess the pioneering gentry studies of the 1960s, draw comparisons to elites in Europe, and suggest new ways of looking at the top people in Chinese local social systems. Chinese Local Elites and Patterns of Dominance lays the foundation for future discussions of Chinese elites and provides a solid introduction for non-specialists. Essays are by Stephen C. Averill, Lenore Barkan, Lynda S. Bell, Timothy Brook, Prasenjit Duara, Edward A. McCord, William T. Rowe, Keith Schoppa, David Strand, Rubie S. Watson, and Madeleine Zelin.
