Book Synopsis (Inter)Cultural Dialogue and Identity in Lithuanian Literature by : Irena Ragaišienė
Download or read book (Inter)Cultural Dialogue and Identity in Lithuanian Literature written by Irena Ragaišienė and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates that the idea of a 'national' literature is profoundly problematic. Chapters on boundaries and crisscrossing show how a nation and its writers' works do not exist in isolation from their history. Stressing migration and (inter)cultural dialogue, authors explore how the characters in the texts establish a sense of belonging both within the context of migrations and within the context of Lithuania since its independence. The final series of essays in this book discusses Lithuanian literature abroad that is in translation.

Book Synopsis Baltic Eugenics by : Björn M. Felder
Download or read book Baltic Eugenics written by Björn M. Felder and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of eugenics in the Baltic States is largely unknown. The book compares for the first time the eugenic projects of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the related disciplines of racial anthropology and psychiatry, and situates them within the wider European context. Strong ethno-nationalism defined the nation as a biological group, which was fostered by authoritarian regimes established in Lithuania in 1926, and in Estonia and Latvia in 1934. The eugenics projects were designed to establish a nation in biological terms. Their aims were to render the nation ethnically, genetically and racially homogeneous. The main agenda was a non-democratic state that defined its population in biological terms. Eugenic policies were to regenerate the nation and to reconstruct it as a “pure” and “original” race, Such schemes for national regeneration contained strong elements of secular religion.

Book Synopsis The Reception of Charles Darwin in Europe by : Eve-Marie Engels
Download or read book The Reception of Charles Darwin in Europe written by Eve-Marie Engels and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Darwin is a crucial figure in nineteenth-century science with an extensive and varied reception in different countries and disciplines. His theory had a revolutionary impact not only on biology, but also on other natural sciences and the new social sciences. The term 'Darwinism', already popular in Darwin's lifetime, ranged across many different areas and ideological aspects, and his own ideas about the implications of evolution for human cognitive, emotional, social and ethical capacities were often interpreted in a way that did not mirror his own intentions. The implications for religious, philosophical and political issues and institutions remain as momentous today as in his own time. This volume conveys the many-sidedness of Darwin's reception and exhibit his far-reaching impact on our self- understanding as human beings.

Book Synopsis I Collegi per stranieri a/e Roma nell'età moderna by : Alessandro Boccolini

This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Bats in the Anthropocene: Conservation of Bats in a Changing World by : Christian C. Voigt
Download or read book Bats in the Anthropocene: Conservation of Bats in a Changing World written by Christian C. Voigt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on central themes related to the conservation of bats. It details their response to land-use change and management practices, intensified urbanization and roost disturbance and loss. Increasing interactions between humans and bats as a result of hunting, disease relationships, occupation of human dwellings, and conflict over fruit crops are explored in depth. Finally, contributors highlight the roles that taxonomy, conservation networks and conservation psychology have to play in conserving this imperilled but vital taxon. With over 1300 species, bats are the second largest order of mammals, yet as the Anthropocene dawns, bat populations around the world are in decline. Greater understanding of the anthropogenic drivers of this decline and exploration of possible mitigation measures are urgently needed if we are to retain global bat diversity in the coming decades. This book brings together teams of international experts to provide a global review of current understanding and recommend directions for future research and mitigation.

Book Synopsis Studies Into the Balts' Sacred Places by : Vykintas Vaitkevičius
Download or read book Studies Into the Balts' Sacred Places written by Vykintas Vaitkevičius and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now, the ancient Balts' sacred places have typically been described according to the few known written sources, referencing mostly the same few examples of investigated monuments. A non-systematic approach is the main problem that has prevented us from using this valuable base of sources for the investigation of the Balts' religion and mythology. The aim of this work is therefore to examine various scientific information, to classify the Balts' sacred places in Lithuania according to type, to point out the main types and groups of sacred places, and moreover, to analyse their religious and historic contexts. The Balts' sacred places are examined systemically: typologically, according to complex archaeological, historic, ethnologic, linguistic, folkloristic scientific methods and the cartographic analysis of monuments. The results of these examinations are then compared to other data about the Balts and their neighbours the Slavs, Germans and Finno-Ugrians.
