Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greg and I met over twenty years ago and discovered we shared a mutual love for flying and for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Being very close in seniority, we have never had the pleasure of flying together, but I have flown with many of his co-pilots, and they all share the same opinion as I do: Captain Johnston is the real deal! If you would like a glimpse into the world of commercial aviation and an excellent source of encouragement, then this book is for you. Captain Dan Mack (American Airlines) Captain Greg Johnston combines his thirty-plus of years of experience on the flight deck to form this book of encouragement. Although the flight scenarios he shares apply to aviation, the biblical principles they illustrate will also apply, in a unique way, to daily life. This is a very good read for anyone, not just the aviation enthusiast alone. First Officer Ann Smith (American Airlines)

Book excerpt: Weiner introduces -- and offers his own motivation for producing - - this most impressive work with the following: There are two distinct approaches to the study of motivation. One stratagem is a product of academic, experimental procedures, while the second is an outgrowth of clinical, non-experimental methods. Each of the approaches has unique advantages and disadvantages. But all investigators in this field are guided by a single basic question, namely, "Why do organisms think and behave as they do?" To help answer that basic question, Human Motivation presents an entire range of motivation studies -- from psychoanalytic, social learning and humanistic theory; to social facilitation, arousal, emotions, personal responsibility, and the irrationality of attributions; through chapterand verse of Hullian and Lewinian theory.

Book excerpt: For a long time I have had the gnawing desire to convey the broad motivational sig nificance of the attributional conception that I have espoused and to present fully the argument that this framework has earned a rightful place alongside other leading theories of motivation. Furthermore, recent investigations have yielded insights into the attributional determinants of affect, thus providing the impetus to embark upon a detailed discussion of emotion and to elucidate the relation between emotion and motivation from an attributional perspective. The presentation of a unified theory of motivation and emotion is the goal of this book. My more specific aims in the chapters to follow are to: 1) Outline the basic princi ples that I believe characterize an adequate theory of motivation; 2) Convey what I perceive to be the conceptual contributions of the perspective advocated by my col leagues and me; 3) Summarize the empirical relations, reach some definitive con clusions, and point out the more equivocal empirical associations based on hypotheses derived from our particular attribution theory; and 4) Clarify questions that have been raised about this conception and provide new material for still further scrutiny. In so doing, the building blocks (if any) laid down by the attributional con ception will be readily identified and unknown juries of present and future peers can then better determine the value of this scientific product.

But the Bible is clear that Christians have nothing to fear in the long run in light of God’s sovereignty and love for his people. In this stirring exposition of 1 and 2 Peter and Jude, pastor David Helm explores these three New Testament letters in depth, reminding readers that suffering precedes future glories for anyone who claims Christ as Lord and Savior. An ideal resource for pastors and teachers looking to connect the Bible’s message to the everyday lives of Christians, this commentary touches on a number of important themes, such as finding encouragement in Christ, avoiding false teaching, what it means to contend for the faith, and how to finish life well. Part of the Preaching the Word commentary series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book portrays an extensive and intensive discussion of theories and research that refer to Vygotsky’s and Feuerstein’s theories of mediated learning and their effects on learning potential and cognitive modifiability. Most topics are discussed in relation to a broad spectrum of developmental and cognitive research that are under the conceptual umbrella of mediated learning and cognitive modifiability. Some topics such as neural plasticity, executive functions, mental rotation, and cognitive education are related to mediated learning, though indirectly, and therefore are included in this book. In many ways the book presents an extension of Vygotsky and Feuerstein’s theories and empirical validation in a variety of family, social and cultural contexts. The book includes a thorough analysis and summary of 50 years of research and methodology of the intimate relation between mediated learning interactions and cognitive modifiability and of dynamic assessment underlying measurement of cognitive modifiability. Special emphasis is given to Tzuriel’s dynamic assessment instruments developed during more than four decades. Tzuriel’s novel instruments are interwoven in the extensive research on parent-child interactions, siblings’ , teachers' and peers' mediation and in validation of dynamic assessment approach and cognitive education programs aimed at development of thinking skills and academic achievements.

Five Air Force general officers, each with decades of global, high-level leadership experience, offer their insight into the five characteristics every effective leader must possess. By offering their own stories and profiling men and women they've led and who have led them, these five generals showcase leadership in action. The stories within place you at 30,000 feet, from being forced to eject from an F-16 to witnessing the harrowing landing of a badly damaged U-2 flown by a badly injured pilot. They'll also place you on the ground in the midst of combat, with warning sirens blaring as an Iraqi missile rapidly descends onto a base where significant leadership decisions are being made. And they'll offer you a unique glimpse of the high-quality men and women of the United States Air Force. In all respects, Leadership from 30,000 Feet will challenge you to become a better leader today.
