Book excerpt: This choreographed book is dedicated to the phenomenon of the bare body in contemporary performance. This work of artistic research draws on philosophical, biopolitical, and ethical discourses relevant to the appearance of bare bodies in choreography, setting a framework for a reflexive movement between affect and ethics, sensuous address and response. Acts of exposure and concealment are culturally situated and anchored, and are examined for their methodological and nanopolitical significance. The concepts of anarchic responsibility and choreo-ethics lead to a reevaluation of contact, relationship, and solidarity. Choreography is thus understood as a complex field of revelatory experiences based on ecologies of aesthetic perception and ethico-political agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a selection of Hubert Dreyfus's pioneering work in bringing phenomenology and existentialism to bear on the philosophical and scientific study of the mind. Each of the thirteen essays interprets, develops, and extends the insights of his predecessors working in the European philosophical tradition. One of Dreyfus' central contributions to reading the historical canon of philosophy comes from his recognition that great philosophers help us to understand the "background practices" of a culture - the practices that shape and embody our most basic understanding of ourselves and the things and situations we encounter in our world. Background practices are all too often overlooked completely, or else their importance is misunderstood. Each chapter in this volume shows in one way or another how a broad range of philosophical topics can only be properly understood when we recognize how they are grounded in the background practices that shape our lives and give meaning to our activities, our tasks, our normative commitments, our aims and our goals.

Book excerpt: What is persistent pain? How do we communicate pain, not only in words but in visual images and gesture? How do we respond to the pain of another, and can we do it better? Can explaining how pain works help us handle it? This unique compilation of voices addresses these and bigger questions. Defined as having lasted over three months, persistent pain changes the brain and nervous system so pain no longer warns of danger: it seems to be a fault in the system. It is a major cause of disability globally, but it remains difficult to communicate, a problem both to those with pain and those who try to help. Language struggles to bridge the gap, and it raises ethical challenges in its management unlike those of other common conditions. Encountering Pain shares leading research into the potential value of visual images and non-verbal forms of communication as means of improving clinician–patient interaction. It is divided into four sections: hearing, seeing, speaking, and a final series of contributions on the future for persistent pain. The chapters are accompanied by vivid photographs co-created with those who live with pain. The volume integrates the voices of leading scientists, academics and contemporary artists with poetry and poignant personal testimonies to provide a manual for understanding the meanings of pain, for healthcare professionals, pain patients, students, academics and artists. The voices and experiences of those living with pain are central, providing tools for discussion and future research, shifting register between creative, academic and personal contributions from diverse cultures and weaving them together to offer new understanding, knowledge and hope.

Book excerpt: 2022 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Shortlisted for the 2022 Best First Monograph Award presented by the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Hollywood fantasy cinema is responsible for some of the most lucrative franchises produced over the past two decades, yet it remains difficult to find popular or critical consensus on what the experience of watching fantasy cinema actually entails. What makes something a fantasy film, and what unique pleasures does the genre offer? In Encountering the Impossible, Alexander Sergeant solves the riddle of the fantasy film by theorizing the underlying experience of imagination alluded to in scholarly discussions of the genre. Drawing principally on the psychoanalysis of Melanie Klein and D.W. Winnicott, Sergeant considers the way in which fantasy cinema rejects Hollywood's typically naturalistic mode of address to generate an alternative experience that Sergeant refers to as the fantastic, a way of approaching cinema that embraces the illusory nature of the medium as part of the pleasure of the experience. Analyzing such canonical Hollywood fantasy films as The Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life, Mary Poppins, Conan the Barbarian, and The Lord of the Rings movies, Sergeant theorizes how fantasy cinema provides a unique film experience throughout its ubiquitous presence in the history of Hollywood film production.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of enlightening reflections on the 'SORROWFUL' Rosary mysteries that help us discern their meaning and applications for our life situations and challenges, appreciate God’s graces and goodness that we have taken for granted and importantly, listen to God’s ‘still small voice (1 Kings 19:12)’ speaking to us – In essence to help us encounter God through the Rosary. Mother Mary has always asked the people to pray the Rosary. But Rosary praying is declining because most find it to be a mere repetition of prayers and do not discover the real treasures of the Rosary which are hidden in its mysteries. The Rosary mysteries are called ‘mysteries’ because we are to ‘solve the mystery’ of how those biblical events apply to our own life when we meditate on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sixteen short but perceptive commentaries, Anthony J. Gittins recounts the experiences of various women and men from the New Testament--insiders and outsiders, people of substance and people regarded as sinners--whose lives were changed by an encounter with Jesus. Based on solid biblical scholarship but retold in language accessible to all and illuminated by the author's fresh perspective, these stories emphasize the way in which people come to faith and discover discipleship. Encountering Jesus presents New Testament figures in a new light and is perfect for both group study and personal reflection. Among the discipleship stories included are the healing of the paralytic from the Gospel of Mark, the healing of the Canaanite woman's daughter from Matthew, the conversion of Zacchaeus the tax collector from Luke, and the healing of the man born blind from John. Anthony J. Gittins writes: "Typically, the stories demonstrate that there are often a number of stages or steps involved. The easiest way to identify them is to notice exactly what each person says, and in what sequence, during his or her encounter with Jesus. With the rare exception of someone immediately identifying Jesus with God... most people are a little slower.... Readers may look out for a three-step or four-step approach to faith, as a person moves to an even more specific identification of Jesus. It is an interesting, englightening, and sometimes surprising exercise."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God, who existed from eternity, created the entire universe and everything in it through His Word. And God proclaimed this fact in the very first verse of the Bible. To receive all the blessings in heaven, one must believe in the first verse of the Bible, which proclaims, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Believing that the Creator God is alive is the first step of faith. Abraham is a representative person of faith who appears in Genesis. However, Jesus said about Abraham: “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56). Abraham, a man of faith who lived about 2,000 years before Jesus came to this earth, met Jesus. We also meet Jesus Christ in the Words of Genesis. Jesus is the Son of God, the only begotten of God the Father. Jesus, the Word of life which was from the beginning, is the true light that came among us in the flesh according to the will of God the Father. When the true light came to this earth and shone in the darkness, the darkness fled in an instant. Jesus, who came “by water and blood” (1 John 5:6), offered “one sacrifice for sins forever” (Hebrews 10:12) with His body and eliminated all the sins of this world. Through this collection of sermons, I hope readers will meet Jesus Christ, who has saved us entirely from all sins and made us children of light. And I pray that you will receive all the blessings in Heaven through Him.

Book excerpt: Discusses the journey of Buddhist ideas on awareness and personhood from India to China. Encounters of Mind explores a crucial step in the philosophical journey of Buddhism from India to China, and what influence this step, once taken, had on Chinese thought in a broader scope. The relationship of concepts of mind, or awareness, to the constitution of personhood in Chinese traditions of reflection was to change profoundly after the Cognition School of Buddhism made its way to China during the sixth century. India’s Buddhist philosophers had formulated the idea that, in order for human beings to achieve perfect enlightenment, they had to produce a state of awareness through practice that they described as “luminous.” However, once introduced to the Chinese tradition, the concept of the “luminous mind” was to become a condition already found within human nature for the possibility of achieving human ideals. This notion of the luminous mind was to have far-reaching significance both for Chinese Buddhism and for medieval Confucianism. Douglas L. Berger follows the transforming path of conceptions of the luminosity of consciousness and the perfectibility of personhood in order to bring into clearer relief the history of Indian and Chinese philosophical dialogue, as well as in the hope that such dialogue will be reignited.

Burgess first travelled to Russia, he was hoping to expand his theological horizons and explore the rebirth of the Orthodox Church since the fall of Communism. But what he found changed some fundamental assumptions about his own tradition of North American Protestantism. In this book, Burgess looks to Orthodoxy to help the North American Protestant church„which has seen membership decline to below 50% of the population for the first time„find new ways to worship, teach, and spread its message. He considers Orthodox rituals, icons, the attention to saints and miracles, monastic life, and Eucharistic theology and practice. He then explores whether and how Protestants can use these elements of Orthodoxy to help revitalize the mainline church. Burgess helpfully demonstrates the ways in which Orthodoxy calls us back to what is most important in Christian faith and life.

Book excerpt: This book began when the author realised that, when people said they were fascinated by particular biblical passages, they were usually ones that presented dramatic encounters between people and between God and people. Such are the passages interpreted in this book. They usually set a vivid scene that heightens the dramatic nature of the encounter, and animated dialogue often directly ad- dresses the reader. There is also animated action that is vividly striking and often sudden and unexpected. These features involve the readers themselves and may question them about what they expect. Indeed the dramatic encounters provocatively lead to unex- pected new life in the future.

Book excerpt: The good-looking and beloved Fr. Alexander Vanos has served his church and community well. But, he’s no ordinary priest. Bored to death with the mundane rituals and routines of priestly life, he studies centuries old church policies and doctrines and asks the question....do they line up with biblical doctrine? Thus begins his quest for truth, leading to a life-changing decision that threatens to destroy close and supportive relationships. As if that wasn’t enough, a chance encounter with an African American Protestant female with her own issues, will dramatically reshape the course of their lives and set them on a collision course with their respective families. Will he choose love, or devotion to God? Can he have both? Will she do the unthinkable? But his decision to accept the challenge to spearhead an organization of ex-priests explodes into an international initiative and proves to be his boldest move yet. Described as a ‘modern day Martin Luther’ by some, Fr. Vanos and this organization embarks on an extraordinary journey, one that threatens the boundaries of family relations, and ultimately...challenges Rome on an international platform, continuing in the sequel The Silent Majority, (available now at on-line book stores, and www.westbowpress.com.)
