Book Synopsis The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales 1595-1918 by : Roger J. P. Kain
Download or read book The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales 1595-1918 written by Roger J. P. Kain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive study of the enclosure mapping of England and Wales. Enclosure maps are fundamental sources of evidence in many types of historical inquiries. Although modern historians tend to view these large-scale maps essentially as sources of data on past economies and societies, this book argues that enclosure maps had a much more active role at the time they were compiled. Seen from this perspective of their contemporary society, enclosure maps are not simply antiquarian curiosities, cultural artefacts, or useful sources for historians but instruments of land reorganisation and control which both reflected and consolidated the power of those who commissioned them. The book is accompanied by a fully searchable, descriptive and analytical web catalogue of all parliamentary and non-parliamentary enclosure maps extant in public archives and libraries and offers an essential research tool for economic, social and local historians and for geographers, lawyers and planners.
Download or read book Walls written by Thomas Oles and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about walls is genuinely exciting and alive with insights, elegance, rigor, style, and thoughtful humanism. It reveals and interrogates the social, political, and historical complexities of one of our most common landscape features, demonstrating how we misconstrue or fail to appreciate the nature and possibilities of physical boundaries. Oles shows that our societies and our politics are shaped by the nature and quality of the divisions we make on and among landscapes, and he interrogates practical, theoretical, and ethical aspects of our landscapes and the boundaries between them. This leads him into stark discussions of barriers such as the USMexico border fence, Israel s fortifications in the West Bank, and the kinds of residential barriers that define neighborhoods by their edges in communities worldwide, from Johannesburg to Levittown. Oles further locates counternarratives of walls, showing how people have lived in walls or used them in seemingly contradictory ways, letting permeability become a form of strength."

Book Synopsis Manors and Maps in Rural England, from the Tenth Century to the Seventeenth by : P.D.A. Harvey
Download or read book Manors and Maps in Rural England, from the Tenth Century to the Seventeenth written by P.D.A. Harvey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P.D.A. Harvey is a historian of medieval rural England with a wide interest in the history of cartography; this collection of his essays brings together both these strands. It first looks at the English countryside from the 10th century to the 15th, investigating problems in particular documents, in the village community and in underlying long-term changes. How landlords drew profits from their property in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, how and why there followed changes in the way landed estates were run and in the written records they produced, what new light their personal seals can throw on medieval peasants, are all among the topics discussed, while the local management of large estates and the development of the peasant land market are themes that recur throughout. There follow essays on the way maps were brought into the management of landed estates in the 16th and 17th centuries, starting with the introduction of consistent scale into mapping, a new concept crucially important in the general history of topographical maps. The collection closes by looking at some of the traps that both documents and maps set for the historian of the English countryside.
