Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Enchanted Parrot: Being a Selection From the Suka Saptati, or the Seventy Tales of a Parrot The Suka Saptati, seventy tales of a parrot, are quite characteristic of Eastern story. The peg on which they hang is a certain Prabhavati. This lady's husband, whose name is Madana, has gone on a long journey. He has, however, left her his parrot, a bird which appears to be under a charm. Prab havati, after her husband has been absent some little time, begins to feel rather dull, and her attend ants, or friends, suggest that she had better look out for some admirer to console her during his absence. She accordingly is preparing to start on this errand, when the parrot suddenly finds his voice, and remarks very strongly on Prabhavati's disreputable intentions. Prabhavati makes up her mind to have the parrot's neck wrung, but before actually departing, and ordering the bloodthirsty deed to be carried out, she reflects that after all it is only a bird speaking, and tells him that she means to go in spite of his well-meant advice. This starts the parrot off, and he bids her go by all means, if she is as clever as some one whom he knows. Prab. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction. The Suka Saptati, seventy tales of a parrot, are quite characteristic of Eastern story. The peg on which they hang is a certain Prabhavatt. This lady's husband, whose name is Madana, has gone on a long journey. He has, however, left her his parrot, a bird which appears to be under a charm. Prabhavati, after her husband has been absent some little time, begins to feel rather dull, and her attendants, or friends, suggest that she had better look out for some admirer to console her during his absence. This starts the parrot off, and he bids her go by all means, if she is as clever as someone whom he knows. Prabhivati asks him who this person may be, and wherein their cleyemess consists. This leads to Story I, and just when the climax arrives the parrot stops, and asks Prabhavati and her friends how they think the story ends. Of course they don't know, and the parrot keeps them on tenterhooks for a bit, and finally tells them. By this time the evening is tolerably far advanced, so that it is of no use for Prabhavati to set out on her love-making expeditions, and she goes to bed with her attendants. This process is repeated for sixty-nine evenings, and finally Prabhelvati's husband returns. From what he gathers, he does not altogether approve of his wife's goings on in his absence and seems as if he meant to proceed to extremities, when the eloquent parrot calms him down with the seventieth story, after which Madana's father observes a great festival in honour of his son and daughter-in-law, and the parrot, having worked out the charm (or the curse), ascends to heaven in a rain of flowers. Note. The tales all begin and end in a similar manner. I have given the introduction and conclusion to the first two as examples, but it does not seem necessary to go through all the stories in the same way. Some of the Tales have been omitted as unsuitable for translation into English.

Book Synopsis Portuguese and Luso-Asian Legacies in Southeast Asia, 1511-2011, vol. 1 by : Laura Jarnagin
Download or read book Portuguese and Luso-Asian Legacies in Southeast Asia, 1511-2011, vol. 1 written by Laura Jarnagin and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1511, a Portuguese expedition under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque arrived on the shores of Malacca, taking control of the prosperous Malayan port-city after a swift military campaign. Portugal, a peripheral but then technologically advanced country in southwestern Europe since the latter fifteenth century, had been in the process of establishing solid outposts all along Asia's litoral in order to participate in the most active and profitable maritime trading routes of the day. As it turned out, the Portuguese presence and influence in the Malayan Peninsula and elsewhere in continental and insular Asia expanded far beyond the sphere of commerce and extended over time well into the twenty-first century. Five hundred years later, a conference held in Singapore brought together a large group of scholars from widely different national, academic and disciplinary contexts, to analyse and discuss the intricate consequences of Portuguese interactions in Asia over the longue duree. The result of these discussions is a stimulating set of case studies that, as a rule, combine original archival and/or field research with innovative historiographical perspectives. Luso-Asian communities, real and imagined, and Luso-Asian heritage, material and symbolic, are studied with depth and insight. The range of thematic, chronological and geographic areas covered in these proceeding is truly remarkable, showing not only the extraordinary relevance of revisiting Luso-Asian interactions in the longer term, but also the surprising dynamism within an area of studies which seemed on the verge of exhaustion. After all, archives from all over the world, from Rio de Janeiro to London, from Lisbon to Rome, and from Goa to Macao, might still hold some secrets on the subject of Luso-Asian relations, when duly explored by resourceful scholars. -- Rui M. Loureiro, Centro de Historia de Alem-Mar, Lisbon.

Book Synopsis The Quiet Avant‐Garde by : Danila Cannamela
Download or read book The Quiet Avant‐Garde written by Danila Cannamela and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blending of people and living machines is a central element in the futurist "reconstruction of the universe." However, prior to the futurist break, a group of early-twentieth-century poets, later dubbed crepuscolari (crepusculars), had already begun an attack against the dominant cultural system, using their poetry as the locus in which useless little objects clashed with the traditional poetry of human greatness and stylistic perfection. The Quiet Avant-Garde draws from a number of twenty-first-century theories – vital materialism, object-oriented ontology, and environmental humanities – as well as Bruno Latour’s criticism of modernity to illustrate how the crepuscular movement sabotaged the modern mindset and launched the counter-discourse of the Italian avant-garde by blurring the line dividing people from "things." This liminal poetics, at the crossroad of tradition, modernism, and the avant-garde, acted as the initiator of the ethical and environmental transition from a universe subjected to humans to human-thing co-agency. This book proposes a contemporary reading of Italian twentieth-century movements and offers a foothold for scholars outside Italian studies to access authors who are still unexplored in North American literature.

Download or read book The Lion and the Bird written by Marianne Dubuc and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By a talent and highly acclaimed illustrator, The Lion and the Bird is every bit as unusual, lovely, and powerful as Little Bird and should be represented. The high production values of the book, along with the quality of the images and storytelling, as well as the author's previous books should lead buyers to take a chance on this title. Not to represent this book would be to miss out on a major book of the spring season. This is a book for all ages so provide buyers, whether at the independents or the museum stores, with several strong choices in terms of shelving and presentation. As a French Canadian author, Dubuc is close to the east coast and will be coming to promote and talk about her book.
