Si por entonces Madrid era una ciudad periférica desde el punto de vista plástico, imaginemos en qué situación debían encontrarse las capitales de provincia. Será más o menos a partir de la década de los años 10 del siglo XX cuando la renovación, una modernidad ciertamente diluida, comience a apreciarse en los artistas alicantinos: en 1918 Emilio Varela, un autor que podemos sin duda calificar como moderno, encuentra uno de sus primeros momentos de clímax creativo; es el año también en el que el escultor Daniel Bañuls mostraba sus primeros trabajos. Como desarrollaremos a lo largo de este artículo, para rastrear la entrada de la modernidad plástica en Alicante tenemos que acompañar a los artistas de fines de siglo por sus periplos peninsulares y europeos.
