Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Media Luna Watershed contains various unique ecosystems, highlighted by the spectacular lake, Media Luna. This book was written to create attention to the fragile ecosystems within the watershed and the environmental impacts tourism and commerce is producing. Also, to provide the citizens within the watershed and tourists a field guide to the aquatic environment found throughout the watershed. This book covers the natural history to include aquatic vegetation, fishes, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and crustaceans that are commonly found within the watershed. This book begins with the history, both natural and social, of the creation of Media Luna as a park and ends with a discussion about environmental impacts that are currently occurring. In between, we introduce the reader to the natural history found in the watershed with nearly one hundred real photos for easy identification. With every image is a brief but precise description of the pictured species. The goal of this guide is to awaken curiosity and interest in the beautiful and diverse ecosystems found inside the Media Luna Watershed.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the simultaneous development of prominent social movements and the election of left and centre-left governments has radically altered the political landscape in Latin America. These social movements have ranged from the community based 'piqueteros' of Argentina that brought down three governments in the space of a month in 2001 to the indigenous movements in Ecuador and Bolivia that were instrumental in toppling five governments in the last decade. And in the cases of Venezuela and Brazil, social movements helped to provide the political base from which leftist leaders like Hugo Chávez and Lula were swept into power by election. This wide-ranging volume moves beyond simple discussion of these social movements to address an issue that is crucial for politics in the region today but has yet to be properly analysed - specifically, what is the position of the social movements after progressive governments take power. Are they co-opted in support of government policies or do they remain at arm’s length as continuing opponents? How many of the movement's demands are actually met and what happens when the government almost inevitably disappoints its supporters in such movements? This unique and important work explores these questions, shedding new light on how these social movements continue to operate in Latin America.

Book excerpt: This extensive reference examines extreme political movements and the political, cultural, and economic conditions that breed them, from the alt-right in the United States to the Houthi rebel movement in Yemen and the question of Taiwan's independence. Nationalism Today: Extreme Political Movements around the World is an authoritative guide for students and teachers who seek to understand nationalist movements across the globe. The two-volume work opens with essays that describe different types of nationalist movements: extremist, revisionist, and separatist. Arranged by country, the entries that follow provide the geographic, cultural, economic, and political context for the development of nationalist movements. The entries provide expert analysis of specific movements and lay the groundwork for comparison of the many different types of extreme political movements that are exerting themselves around the world today. In addition, easy-to-read tables give cultural, economic, and political facts and figures for each country. A comprehensive scholarly bibliography of secondary sources rounds out the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its early beginnings peace and conflict research has focused on causes of phenomena such as civil war, terrorism, and state failure. The author merges this approach with a peace causes perspective and asks why civil war happened in Peru (1980-1995) though not in Bolivia, which is striking given the structural similarities with Peru as well as a number of escalation episodes leading the country to the brink of civil war (2000-2008). He explores the political measures such as reforms and political dialogue, which prevented the country from rather hazardous consequences.
