Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a focus on some of the main markers and challenges that are at the core of the study of structural transformations in contemporary capitalism and their implications for labour in the Global South. It examines the diverse perspectives and regional and social variations that characterise labour relations as a result of the uneven development which is an important facet of the intensification of capitalist accumulation.. The book provides important insights into the impact of the crises of capitalism on the wellbeing of labour at different historical junctures. Some of the issues covered by it include the conditions of work, and the changing composition of laboring classes and/or working people. The chapters also throw light on the multiple trajectories in the development of labour relations and employment in the Global South, especially after the ascendancy and domination of neoliberal finance capitalism. Some of the major aspects considered by the essays include the decentering of production and development of global value systems, crisis of social reproduction, and the rising informalisation of work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, a fascinating growth story has unfolded in India. Yet, the improvement in material conditions for the country’s vast majority has not kept pace with that growth. This is mainly because India is still grappling with poor employment conditions and widespread unemployment. However, there is not much clarity on the exact nature of this problem and the steps required to tackle it. This short introduction addresses this lack of information. Reviewing the evolution of employment conditions in India since Independence, this volume underscores the linkages between it and economic growth and development. It not only clearly outlines the contours of the employment challenge that India is now confronted with but also discusses viable ways of overcoming this hurdle.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with why unemployment is so high and why it fluctuates so wildly. It shows how unemployment affects inflation, and discusses whether full employment can ever be combined with price stability. It asks why some groups have higher unemployment rates than others. The book thus surveys in a clear, textbook fashion the main aspects of the unemployment problem. It integrates macroeconomics with a detailed micro-analysis of the labour market. it uses the authors' model to explain the puzzling post-war history of OECD unemployment and shows how unemployment and inflation are affected by systems of wage bargaining and unemployment insurance. For each issue it develops new relevant theory, followed by extensive empirical analysis. The authors are established experts in this field, and this book gives their definitive treatment. It is based largely on new research, but also incorporates the best of existing knowledge. The long `overview' chapter is accessible to any non-specialist with an elementary knowledge of economics. The rest of the book provides key elements for courses in macroeconomics and labour economics at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, and will serve as a major source of reference for both scholars and students. The basic aim of the book, however, is to provide the basis for better policy. As the book shows, by learning from theory and experience, we can avoid the waste and misery of high unemployment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In comparison to other social groups, India’s rural poor – and particularly Adivasis and Dalits - have seen little benefit from the country’s economic growth over the last three decades. Though economists and statisticians are able to model the form and extent of this inequality, their work is rarely concerned with identifying possible causes. Employment, Poverty and Rights in India analyses unemployment in India and explains why the issues of employment and unemployment should be the appropriate prism to understand the status of wellbeing in India. The author provides a historical analysis of policy interventions on behalf of the colonial and postcolonial state with regard to the alleviation of unemployment and poverty in India and in West Bengal in particular. Arguing that, as long as poverty - either as a concept or as an empirical condition - remains as a technical issue to be managed by governmental technologies, the ‘poor’ will be held responsible for their own fate and the extent of poverty will continue to increase. The book contends that rural unemployment in India is not just an economic issue but a political process that has consistently been shaped by various socio-economic, political and cultural factors since the colonial period. The analysis which depends mainly on ethnography extends to the implementation of the ‘New Rights Agenda’, such as the MGNREGA, at the rural margin. Challenging the dominant approach to poverty, this book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of South Asian studies, Indian Political Economy, contemporary political theories, poverty studies, neo-liberalism, sociology and social anthropology as well as development studies.

Book excerpt: Although India?s economy is growing at a steady clip of over 7 per cent a year, job creation is far short of where it needs to be. At the same time, most Indians who are employed are stuck in jobs that don?t pay well. Hidden in this tangle is not just a crisis of productivity and skills, but also a lack of employment opportunities for the country?s teeming millions. If the issues miring both demand and supply in the job market are not addressed urgently, we are looking at an economy in which over 20 crore people will be in `bad jobs? or even without jobs by 2025. Why are Indian companies not creating enough jobs? Why do small companies remain small? Will bots take over today?s jobs, from the shop floor to the back office? What will salaries of the future look like? Why have successive governments failed in their promises to create more jobs that pay well? Goutam Das explores these questions and more, in this engaging narrative that documents the real stories of workers of all shades across India, from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu to Gurugram in Haryana, highlighting the social and political consequences of unemployment and underemployment. Presenting astute analyses of the current and future trends in India?s job market, this timely book points to the path forward and underlines the human potential we can tap into to turn the tide.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this whole study is to assess the employment-unemployment situation for Muslims in India and in certain selected states. The study is based on the NSSO employment-unemployment data from the 50th round (1993-94) to the 66th round (2009-10) for about 17 years. The study focuses on the pattern of employment distribution among Muslims in India as a whole as well as in certain selected states. The employment pattern in terms of activity status, industry and occupation has been studied here for workers from Muslim community. This study looks at the unemployment rates among Muslims and then proceeds to find the factors associated with employment and unemployment problems. The study has analyzed the factors which are related to the employment-unemployment situation of Muslims in different states and have provided some explanations also. But at last in conclusion I can say that the major problems with Muslims in India and in the selected states are lack of education, poverty and lack of incentives to work especially among Muslim female workers.
