Book excerpt: This literature review explores how political, economic and resource management policies and programs can reduce forest degradation and increase the contribution of forest goods and services to sustainable livelihood strategies. In Ethiopia, studies indicate that forest dependency is strong throughout the country, but the importance of forest income varies across different regions and wealth categories. Research suggests that improving forest product market governance is key to strengthening forest livelihood resiliency. Recent experiments with forest governance devolution have shown mixed results in terms of improving forest conditions and livelihoods. Smallholder land certification has met with considerable success, whereas participatory forest management schemes have positive ecological outcomes but fall short in terms of livelihood gains. In South Sudan, civil war has limited the depth and scope of research on dryland forests and livelihoods. Food security analyses indicate that the importance of forest income varies by region and season. Markets are poorly developed and forest governance systems are weak in many parts of the country. Key threats to forest livelihoods in both countries include: shifting climatic conditions, large-scale population movements, large-scale land acquisitions and weakened governance institutions; and in South Sudan, continuing violent conflict. In Ethiopia, research and policy reform should focus on the relationship between forest rights devolution, livelihoods, forest management practices and forest conditions as well as on the impacts of demographic change on forest-based livelihoods, forest management and forest cover. In South Sudan, research should focus on documenting the impacts of conflict on forest-based livelihoods with an view to structuring humanitarian aid programs in ways that mitigate the negative impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudan is a country located in northeastern Africa, bordered by Egypt to the north, Libya to the northwest, Chad to the west, Central African Republic to the southwest, South Sudan to the south, Ethiopia to the southeast, and the Red Sea to the northeast. The country is home to over 40 million people and is one of the largest in Africa in terms of land area. It is also one of the most diverse countries in terms of languages, cultures, and religions, with Arabic and Islam being predominant in the northern regions, while different African languages and religions are more prevalent in the south. Since its independence from colonial rule, Sudan has experienced widespread violence and instability, including two civil wars that lasted for several decades and resulted in the secession of South Sudan in 2011. Even after the split, Sudan still faces numerous challenges, including economic crisis, political turmoil, ongoing conflicts in Darfur and other regions, and a large number of refugees and internally displaced people. However, the country also has significant resources and potential, including oil reserves, mineral deposits, and a strategic location at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East.

The first chapter gives an account of the forestry situation in West and Central Africa, with emphasis on vegetation distribution and factors affecting forest management. Chapters 2 and 3 highlight past and present silvicultural and forest management practices and also consider management control systems. The relevance of biodiversity and the role of non-timber forest products are explored in Chapter 4. Inter-generational issues, socio-economic factors influencing sustainable forest management, and the relevance of policies and legislation are addressed in Chapters 5, 6 and 7. Chapter 8 outlines strategies and incentives which might be adopted to promote sustainable forest management. The report concludes with suggestions for research which could be undertaken to fill gaps in knowledge which became apparent in the course of this project.

This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Audit Committee states that the UK should only provide funding for multilateral institutions with strong environmental credentials. The current scale of the World Bank's lending to fossil fuel powered energy generation is unacceptable and the Committee urges the Government to be prepared to vote against new World Bank funding for high emissions coal-fired power stations. The profile of climate change has increased hugely but there is far less awareness of the importance of protecting biodiversity and ecosystems. The Committee believes that the Department for International Development (DFID) needs to publish a clear strategy on its approach to environmental issues to ensure that it gives them sufficient priority in its programmes and expenditure. Every effort must be made to help emerging economies leap-frog fossil fuels and fuel their growth with clean energy instead. High levels of consumption in the UK increases demand on production in poor countries which leads to degradation of their natural resources. The report calls on the UK Government to ensure that economic activity in Britain does not cancel out, or even reverse, the positive impact that UK aid is having overseas.

Book excerpt: "Deforestation in Maban" is an eye-opening exploration of the intricate dance between human survival and environmental consequences in the heart of Maban, South Sudan's Upper Nile State. In this compelling narrative, the lush landscapes of Maban County set the stage for a story that unfolds at the intersection of resilience, displacement, and the unintended ecological impact of refugees seeking refuge during conflict. As the pages turn, readers are transported to Maban, where the echoes of chainsaws reverberate through the air, and the verdant forests bear witness to the struggles of those who seek safety within its borders. The book delves into the lives of displaced communities, forced by circumstances beyond their control to make difficult choices in their pursuit of survival.
