Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Empirical Investigation of the Motivational Determinants of Task Performance: Interactive Effects Between Instrumentality-Valence and Motivation-Ability The present study was designed to operationslize and test two components of a motivational model thought to be useful in the explanation of productivity variations among operative workers, V room (1964) has suggested that performance can be thought of as a multiplicative function of motivation and ability C?= f(M A), Motivation to perform a task can be postulated to vary with the valences (V)of outcomes associated with the performance of that task and the instrumentality (I) of performance for attainment of these desirable outcomes or for avoidance of undesirable outcomes. Thirty-two operative workers completed questionnaires designed to operationalize the concepts of valence and instrumentality and to test the interactive effects of V and I as well as M and A, A modified analysis of variance procedure, utilizing a dummy variable technique and step-wise multiple regression procedure, yielded support for the hypothesized interactive effects. Results are interpreted in terms of the Vroom model as well as other recent research yielding Ma effects. Book excerpt: This second edition of the best-selling textbook on Work Motivation in Organizational Behavior provides an update of the critical analysis of the scientific literature on this topic, and provides a highly integrated treatment of leading theories, including their historical roots and progression over the years. A heavy emphasis is placed on the notion that behavior in the workplace is determined by a mix of factors, many of which are not treated in texts on work motivation (such as frustration and violence, power, love, and sex). Examples from current and recent media events are numerous, and intended to illustrate concepts and issues related to work motivation, emotion, attitudes, and behavior.

Book Synopsis Expectations and Actions by : Norman T. Feather
Download or read book Expectations and Actions written by Norman T. Feather and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book examines the current status of expectancy-value models in psychology. The focus is upon cognitive models that relate action to the perceived attractiveness or aversiveness of expected consequences. A person’s behavior is seen to bear some relation to the expectations the person holds and the subjective value of the consequences that might occur following the action. Despite widespread interest in the expectancy-value (valence) approach at the time, there was no book that looked at its current status and discussed its strengths and its weaknesses, using contributions from some of the theorists who were involved in its original and subsequent development and from others who were influenced by it or had cause to examine the approach closely. This book was planned to meet this need. The chapters in this book relate to such areas as achievement motivation, attribution theory, information feedback, organizational psychology, the psychology of values and attitudes, and decision theory and in some cases they advance the expectancy-value approach further and, in other cases, point to some of its deficiencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a meditation on the links between philosophy and its implementation, interpreting why and how a leader's "philosophy" strengthens his action predicated on the purposeful vision of life; and discusses the a hypothesis that performance control in management may be driven by transcendental and intrinsic motivations, contrasting with the traditional management control theory. It construes how Inamori's management philosophy disciplines accounting and finance management towards putting its basic tenets into practice. Examining, in particular, the history of Kyocera, the authors provide a contemplative look at a human centric philosophy, which will be of interest to scholars of management, corporate executives, and economists with a philosophical bent.
