Book excerpt: Electromagnetic Pulse Simulations Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method Discover the utility of the FDTD approach to solving electromagnetic problems with this powerful new resource Electromagnetic Pulse Simulations Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method delivers a comprehensive overview of the generation and propagation of ultra-wideband electromagnetic pulses. The book provides a broad cross-section of studies of electromagnetic waves and their propagation in free space, dielectric media, complex media, and within guiding structures, like waveguide lines, transmission lines, and antennae. The distinguished author offers readers a fresh new approach for analyzing electromagnetic modes for pulsed electromagnetic systems designed to improve the reader’s understanding of the electromagnetic modes responsible for radiating far-fields. The book also provides a wide variety of computer programs, data analysis techniques, and visualization tools with state-of-the-art packages in MATLAB® and Octave. Following an introduction and clarification of basic electromagnetics and the frequency and time domain approach, the book delivers explanations of different numerical methods frequently used in computational electromagnetics and the necessity for the time domain treatment. In addition to a discussion of the Finite-difference Time-domain (FDTD) approach, readers will also enjoy: A thorough introduction to electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and basic electromagnetics, including common applications of electromagnetics and EMP coupling and its effects An exploration of time and frequency domain analysis in electromagnetics, including Maxwell’s equations and their practical implications A discussion of electromagnetic waves and propagation, including waves in free space, dielectric mediums, complex mediums, and guiding structures A treatment of computational electromagnetics, including an explanation of why we need modeling and simulations Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in physics and electrical and electronic engineering, Electromagnetic Pulse Simulations Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method will also earn a place in the libraries of scientists and engineers working in electromagnetic research, RF and microwave design, and electromagnetic interference.

Book excerpt: "During the Cold War, the United States as a nation, and its military in particular, were very focused on nuclear warfighting. After winning the Cold War this focus became significantly lessened. However, in the past decade new concerns have arisen and it is once again realistic to think that the US military might have to operate in a nuclear environment. The one nuclear effect with the possibility to effect very large areas almost immediately after a nuclear explosion is the electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The EMP has the ability to affect any system which is or is composed of electronics or conductive media (e.g., metal). As the most advanced military in the world, the US military is highly dependent upon advanced electronic systems to operate. By obtaining a better understanding of how an EMP is formed and propagated and then affects systems, the military can better design, test, and certify its systems to ensure that they are capable of operating in an EMP environment, and the better understanding will enable this to be done in a cost-effective manner. This paper shall look at what we know about EMP, the facilities and resources we have for improving that understanding, and make some recommendations for how to best move forward with future programs."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Planning and Architectural Design of Integrated Services Digital Networks: Civil and Military Applications provides a comprehensive treatment of ISDNs: how to plan and design them architecturally and how to implement them so that they meet certain given user requirements ranging from a variety of service demands to transmission performance, security, reliability/availability, capability for growth, interoperability with other ISDN and non-ISDN networks and, of course, cost. The book concentrates on the application of ISDN concepts and standards to the planning and design of real costed networks to meet certain specified user requirements. Where there are multiple options, considerations and rationale on the choice of network aspects and standards are discussed. The unique feature of the book, compared with other books on ISDN, is that it expounds an original methodology which starts from an assumed or given set of complete user requirements and proceeds to designing a complete network taking into account the technology and standards of ISDN, as well as some constraints including cost which may be imposed. Planning and Architectural Design of Integrated Services Digital Networks describes computer-aided design tools employed for dimensioning the network for various traffic loads and for assessing its traffic carrying performance for assessing different precedence categories and network configurations, transmission conditions and routing algorithms which may be static-deterministic or dynamic-adaptive. Aspects such as surveillance and control, security, survivability and EMP protection are also addressed. Planning and Architectural Design of Integrated Services Digital Networks: Civil and Military Applications is an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

The problem is discussed, a basic protection philosophy is advanced and general requirements and criteria are presented. This is followed by a more detailed discussion of the collection and coupling of EMP energy via antennas, Antenna-like structures, apertures, and cables. Then some protection devices are discussed, as well as good construction and installation practices. The applicability of such devices and practices is discussed for ships already in service as well as for those yet to be built. (Author).

Book excerpt: A representative electromagnetic pulse from a high altitude burst will typically have maximum field strengths near the ground on the order of 50 KV/meter and a time duration on the order of a microsecond and rise times on the order of 10 nanoseconds. Installation of EMP protective measures as a retrofit to existing installations is more costly that would have been required if included in the original design and construction. A basic approach for EMP protection of small city, county and State facilities includes containment of communications equipments in a minimus size, double layer galvanized steel wire mesh enclosure, with operators and hand sets adjacent to or remote from the shielded enclosure with connecting cables run in ferrous conduit with threaded couplings. Power cables should be contained in ferrous conduit and there should be a single panel entry of power, hand sets, control, and antenna cable conductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses how to protect against a cataclysmic nuclear EMP (electromagnetic pulse) event. Testifying before congress and elsewhere, experts are in unanimous agreement that an upper atmospheric EMP explosion is not if, but when. It can impact an area like New England states, the East or West Coast, or the entire nation, depending on the explosion altitude. While not instantly killing humans and destroying infrastructure, it ends modern civilization and throws exposed regions back into the 1870 darkness era. This destruction is possible by rogue nations and scores of terrorists groups who know, or think they know, how to do this. The book provides solution options, and ways and means to mitigate or prevent this and the loss of lifestyle from happening. The book does not speak to anti-missile lasers or other military attempts to help preclude this. There are basically two parts to EMP protection: (a) a proposed national plan to protect America and (2) the details of how the protection process is accomplished. The former is covered partly in the author's book “EMP Protect Family, Homes and Community”, and his published articles, while this new book provides the many details of how EMP protection is accomplished. The book also speaks to EMP protection of manufactured, and site-built homes and how to retrofit existing homes. The book provides information and strategies to help preppers and survivalists to live far better lifestyles in a post-EMP environment. Benefactors of EMP protected solar-PV rooftops will enjoy “free” electricity both before and after an EMP event. Thus, a high-altitude EMP will dysfunction electric power-grid and electronic infrastructure (telecommunications; devices, equipment and system controls; and most transportation). Knowing these and how to mitigate them becomes vital to individuals and their entire communities. In this book, you will learn how to electromagnetically shield, bond, ground and cable surge suppress and filter, buildings and their solar rooftops to provide electricity through an electric power-grid outage that may last from hours to years. This book teaches relatively inexpensive means for electromagnetically shielding all size structures, -- cottage sheds, houses and commercial and industrial buildings to protect the electrical and electronic items inside from EMP destruction. Next to saving our civilization from extension, the biggest take-away is the millions of new jobs generated in fulfilling EMP protection over next decade. Most material is written for the lay or non technical. A few formulas are included for those wanting more analysis of risks, achievablity and performance measures.
