Book Synopsis The Burden of Rhyme by : Naomi Levine
Download or read book The Burden of Rhyme written by Naomi Levine and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new account of Victorian poetry and its place in the field of literary studies. The Burden of Rhyme shows how the nineteenth-century search for the origin of rhyme shaped the theory and practice of poetry. For Victorians, rhyme was not (as it was for the New Critics, and as it still is for us) a mere technique or ahistorical form. Instead, it carried vivid historical fantasies derived from early studies of world literature. Naomi Levine argues that rhyme’s association with the advent of literary modernity and with a repertoire of medievalist, Italophilic, and orientalist myths about love, loss, and poetic longing made it a sensitive historiographic instrument. Victorian poets used rhyme to theorize both literary history and the most elusive effects of aesthetic form. This Victorian formalism, which insisted on the significance of origins, was a precursor to and a challenge for twentieth-century methods. In uncovering the rich relationship between Victorian poetic forms and a forgotten style of literary-historical thought, The Burden of Rhyme reveals the unacknowledged influence of Victorian poetics—and its repudiation—on the development of modern literary criticism.

Download or read book Rhyme's Challenge written by David Caplan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhyme's Challenge offers a concise, pithy primer to hip-hop poetics while presenting a spirited defense of rhyme in contemporary American poetry. David Caplan's stylish study examines hip-hop's central but supposedly outmoded verbal technique: rhyme. At a time when print-based poets generally dismiss formal rhyme as old-fashioned and bookish, hip-hop artists deftly deploy it as a way to capture the contemporary moment. Rhyme accommodates and colorfully chronicles the most conspicuous conditions and symbols of contemporary society: its products, technologies, and personalities. Ranging from Shakespeare and Wordsworth to Eminem and Jay-Z, David Caplan's study demonstrates the continuing relevance of rhyme to poetry -- and everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by an Everyman, a person who has traveled through the ups and downs of life, with his eyes wide open and his heart exposed. The eyes have seen too much. The heart has taken a few hits. It started with a poem. One poem reflecting a single thought. Then a second and a third and a fourth. The poems span a period and, in themselves, have become a reflection of the writer, me. The observations are not so unusual. It is unusual, however, I guess, to maintain a printed word of the journey.

Book Synopsis An Emotional Menagerie by : The School of Life
Download or read book An Emotional Menagerie written by The School of Life and published by School of Life Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotions are like animals: No two are quite the same. Some are quiet; some are fierce; And all are hard to tame. An Emotional Menagerie is an emotional glossary for children. A book of 26 rhyming poems, arranged alphabetically, that bring our feelings to life – Anger, Boredom, Curiosity, Dreaminess, Embarrassment, Fear, Guilt, and more. The poems transform each emotion into a different animal to provide a clear and engaging illustration of its character: how it arises; how it makes us behave and how we can learn to manage its effects. Boasting a rich vocabulary, the poems also give children a wide variety of options for describing their feelings to others. Children experience all sorts of emotions: sometimes going through several very different ones before breakfast. Yet they can struggle to put these feelings into words. An inability to understand and communicate their moods can lead to bad behaviour, deep frustration and a whole host of difficulties further down the line. Like adults, they need help to recognise and verbalise their inner state. The greater their emotional vocabulary, the more likely they are to grow into happy, healthy and fulfilled adults. Filled with wise, therapeutic advice, brought to life through musical language and beautiful illustrations, An Emotional Menagerie is an imaginative and universally appealing way of increasing emotional literacy.
