Book excerpt: This thesis explores the emotional connection between Architecture and experience. It is through Edward Relph's phenomenological reinterpretation of the person-environment relationship that a theoretical joint is articulated. Relph describes various levels of 'outsideness' and 'insideness' with regard to places. The greatest degree of 'outsideness' refers to places, which have only superficial qualities and have no sense of belonging. At the other extreme, the greatest degree of 'insideness' characterizes experience of places full of significance but with little self-conscious reflection. It is through this articulation, as well as through contemporary discussion by architects and theorists such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Steven Holl and Peter Zumthor that this thesis will explore the intimacy of an architectural experience. This intimacy, which relies on the experience of the human body and mind as one, constitutes the framework for an emotional experience of Architecture. The case study investigation, which will comprise the second half of the thesis, is concerned with the potential for an environment to aid the emotional well being of an individual. This investigation includes the design of a Center for Well Being. This facility will provide for the everyday enrichment of the human spirit. Targeted towards both those fighting an illness and those wanting to prevent illness and increase personal and family health, the Center will provide services such as educational health seminars and resources, movement and exercise programs, and workshops that promote a healthy mind-body connection. The aim of this case study will be to investigate a framework for encouraging a more intense and fulfilling emotional experience utilizing architectural poetics.

By contrast, the editors of this book have assembled a panel of experts in neuroscience and artificial intelligence who have dared to tackle the issue of whether robots can have emotions from a purely scientific point of view. The study of the brain now usefully informs study of the social, communicative, adaptive, regulatory, and experimental aspects of emotion and offers support for the idea that we exploit our own psychological responses in order to feel others' emotions. The contributors show the many ways in which the brain can be analyzed to shed light on emotions. Fear, reward, and punishment provide structuring concepts for a number of investigations. Neurochemistry reveals the ways in which different "neuromodulators" such as serotonin, dopamine, and opioids can affect the emotional valence of the brain. And studies of different regions such as the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex provide a view of the brain as a network of interacting subsystems. Related studies in artificial intelligence and robotics are discussed and new multi-level architectures are proposed that make it possible for emotions to be implemented. It is now an accepted task in robotics to build robots that perceive human expressions of emotion and can "express" simulated emotions to ease interactions with humans. Looking towards future innovations, some scientists posit roles for emotion with our fellow humans. All of these issues are covered in this timely and stimulating book which is written for researchers and graduated students in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Book excerpt: This project begins with a theoretical and methodological critique of contemporary empirically driven emotion theories. I advocate the rejection of three commonly embraced, but ultimately mistaken perspectives on the nature of emotion: (1) the basic emotions approach; (2) biological reductionism; and (3) the natural kinds approach. I unpack the substance of each of these views and I argue that the empirical data fail to substantiate these claims and that theoretical considerations further push against these claims. I then construct an alternative view that seeks to both makes sense of the empirical emotion data and is consistent with the emerging understanding of the architecture of the brain. The result is a theoretical framework that explains emotions as synthetic multimodal constructs and that characterizes the emotion construction process as a temporally extended, feedback oriented, multimodal, prediction driven process that is critically dependent upon previous learning. I argue that categorization plays an essential role both in individuating emotion experiences from other types of experiences and in differentiating within the category of emotion experiences, e.g. differentiating happiness from sadness. In the remaining two chapters I examine issues related to the epistemological and the motivation role of emotion. I provide an account of self-deception involving emotion experiences and argue that this suggests that emotions are a fallible source of knowledge. Next, I argue that empathy, understood as a process, is a way in which emotions provide a unique source of knowledge. Last, I discuss the role of emotion in moral reasoning and I argue for caution in treating emotions as a source of normativity in grounding moral judgments and suggest an alternative epistemological role for emotions in the process of moral perception. I focus on the potential motivational role of emotion involving moral actions via a discussion of moral agency. I examine in depth the morally relevant capacities of individuals with psychopathy, autism, and acquired sociopathy. I argue that none of these individuals meet the proposed criteria for moral agency. This argument exposes the critical role that emotion plays in moral reasoning and action since all of these individuals experience emotion related impairments.
