Now Emily's an orphan, and her mother's snobbish relatives are taking her to live with them at New Moon Farm. She's sure she won't be happy. Emily deals with stiff, stern Aunt Elizabeth and her malicious classmates by holding her head high and using her quick wit. Things begin to change when she makes friends: with Teddy, who does marvelous drawings; with Perry, who's sailed all over the world with his father yet has never been to school; and above all, with Ilse, a tomboy with a blazing temper. Amazingly, Emily finds New Moon beautiful and fascinating. With new friends and adventures, Emily might someday think of herself as Emily of New Moon.

Through a series of adventures, Emily is furnished with materials to write stories and poems, and even sees success with the short story "The Woman Who Spanked the King." In the meantime, Emily also begins to see romantic possibilities for her life. She and Teddy Kent draw closer, but due to misunderstandings and interference from Teddy's mother, the romance stalls. Emily also refuses a proposal from Perry Miller, and continues her long-lasting friendship with Dean Priest. At the end of the novel, Emily, now a budding young writer, chooses to remain at her beloved New Moon rather than leaving for New York with famous writer Janet Royal.

Book excerpt: "Emily and s Quest is the grand finale of the Lucy Maud Montgomery trilogy, set before World War I on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The orphan in "Emily of New Moon" and the hopeful student in "Emily Climbs" is transformed into a young woman seeking success and love. At the beginning of the story, Emily believes that everyone has abandoned her at New Moon Farms. Best friend Ilsa Burnley has taken off for school in Montreal, suitor Perry Miller is studying Law in Charlottetown. Most annoyingly, Teddy Kent, also left her to study actor and s craft. All she has left is a desire to write and her mentor, the cynical and manipulative Dean Priest. First Emily has no luck with her book, then, suffered a near fatal illness. Lonely and near despair, her only option seems to be Dean and s offer of marriage. But, a dramatic second-sight experience will offer her a vision of a different future. If the endpoint of Emily and s quest may be predictable, but the journey is not. Emily will struggle to sell her first book while dealing with some comical distractions. Emily and s relationship woes will continue to a cleverly written and entertaining ending. Lucy Maud Montgomery drew heavily on her own experiences as a struggling writer in the "Emily" series; the story has some real bite, along with the author and s characteristic humor and gentle wisdom (character of Dean was inspired by her abusive awful husband and her dread of having sex with him). "Emily and s Quest" is very highly recommended to her fans.

Montgomery covers the years 1935 to 1942, the year of Montgomery's death. No longer dwelling in a farm community or a small rural village, Lucy Maud Montgomery explored life in downtown Toronto. Here she experienced the cultural riches the city had to offer while finding friendship and neighbourliness in the suburb of Swansea. The journal chronicles her hopes and satisfaction with her new home and neighbourhood, but also her struggles with her own and her husband's recurring bouts of depression, her worries about her sons' academic performance, and her thoughts on the world events during these years. The final volume in the series offers an intimate eyewitness account of life in a growing city, a friendly neighbourhood, a changing world, and of a troubling family dynamic from 1935 to 1942, all recorded with Lucy Maud Montgomery's sharp eye and characteristic wit.

The biographical elements heavily influenced the Emily trilogy. The poem To the Fringed Gentian was the keynote of Montgomery's every aim and ambition. Like Montgomery, Emily climbs the symbolic "Alpine path" to be a female writer. "The Flash" is an extraordinary experience common to both Montgomery and Emily, but not shared with Anne Shirley. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L. M. Montgomery is perhaps best known as an author of youth fiction, especially her Anne of Green Gables series. But of her novels intended for adult readers, The Blue Castle is the most famous. In Valancy Stirling’s rural Ontario town, marriage is thought to be a young woman’s vital accomplishment. Yet Valancy, now in her late 20s, has never had a flicker of interest from any suitor. Add to this the oppressive home life she endures with her mother, and Valancy’s misery is complete. In order to find some relief, she builds a fantasy world in her imagination—her “Blue Castle”—full of love and beauty. Even this, however, fails to support her when her chest pains prove to be the sign of a terminal condition. This traumatic discovery combines with Valancy’s inspirational reading to prompt her to take back her life—much to her relatives’ consternation. Undeterred, Valancy finds new worth and freedom in relationships she could never have imagined before, which bring their own surprising twists and turns. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Starr was born with the desire to write. As an orphan living on New Moon Farm, writing helped her face the difficult, lonely times. But now all her friends are going away to high school in nearby Shrewsbury, and her old-fashioned, tyrannical aunt Elizabeth will only let her go if she promises to stop writing! All the same, this is the first step in Emily's climb to success. Once in town, Emily's activities set the Shrewsbury gossips buzzing. But Emily and her friends are confident - Ilse's a born actress, Teddy's set to be a great artist, and roguish Perry has the makings of a brilliant lawyer. When Emily has her poems published and writes for the town newspaper, success seems to be on its way - and with it the first whispers of romance. Then Emily is offered a fabulous opportunity, and she must decide if she wants to change her life forever. Lucy Maud Montgomery, publicly known as L.M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. In 1908, Montgomery published her first book, Anne of Green Gables upon which it became an immediate success. She then followed this with a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. In the last year of her life, Montgomery completed what she intended to be a ninth novel featuring Anne, titled The Blythes Are Quoted. It included fifteen short stories (most of which were previously published) that she revised to include Anne and her family as mainly peripheral characters; forty-one poems (most of which were previously published) that she attributed to Anne and to her son Walter, who died as a soldier in the Great War; and vignettes featuring the Blythe family members discussing the poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Anne and Gilbert Blythe, life in a small village is never dull because of all the entertaining gossip, and what strange and funny tales they hear: about the mischievous twins whose dearest wish comes true when they meet up with a bored and haunted millionaire; or clever Penelope Craig, who considers herself an expert on children -- until she adopts a boy of her own; or Timothy Randebush, a man so eager to keep his brother out of the clutches of a dangerous woman that he spirits her away -- only to fall prey to her charms himself. Filled with unexpected surprises, laughter, and tears, here are fourteen of the Blythes' favorite tales.
