Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson Year Book: Selection for Every Day in the Year From the Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson January First. The world exists for the education of each man. There is no stage or state of society or mode or action in history, to which there is not somewhat corresponding in his life. Everything tends in a wonderful manner to abbreviate itself and yield its own virtue to him. January Second. We have the same interest in condition and character. We honor the rich, because they have externally the freedom, power, and grace which we feel to be proper to man, proper to us. January Third. All literature writes the character of the wise man. Books, monuments, pictures, conversation, are portraits in which he finds the lineaments he is forming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson "I have the feeling that every man's biography is at his own expense. He furnishes not only the facts, but the report. I mean that all biography is autobiography. It is only what he tells of himself that comes to be known and believed." So writes the man whose life we are to pass in review, and it is certainly as true of him as of any author we could name. He delineates himself so perfectly in his various writings that the careful reader sees his nature just as it was in all its essentials, and has little more to learn than those human accidents which individualize him in space and time. About all these accidents we have a natural and pardonable curiosity. We wish to know of what race he came, what were the conditions into which he was born, what educational and social influences helped to mould his character, and what new elements Nature added to make him Ralph Waldo Emerson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 1 of 2 The letters I have found less directly available than I had hoped. Emerson says of himself that he was not born under epistolary stars he did not readily communicate his feelings of the mo ment, before they were tried and sifted by reflec tion letter-writing was an effort to him, and the efiort prevented him from giving to his letters that direct impress of his personality - of the man, apart from the author - which we look to find in them. And the same thing is true to a great extent even of his journals, of which there is a full series from his college-days onward almost to the end of his life: they do not often bring us closer to him than we are brought by his published writ ings. I have been obliged to dismember and re arrange them more than I wished, and often to give their general drift in my own words, instead of simply allowing him to tell his own story. Where shall we keep the holiday, And duly greet the entering May? Too strait and low our cottage doors, And all unmeet our carpet floors; Nor spacious court, nor monarch's hall Suffice to hold the festival. Up and away! where haughty woods Front the liberated floods: We will climb the broad-backed hills, Hear the uproar of their joy; We will mark the leaps and gleams Of the new-delivered streams, And the murmuring rivers of sap Mount in the pipes of the trees, Giddy with day, to the topmost spire, Which for a spike of tender green Bartered its powdery cap; And the colors of joy in the bird, And the love in its carol heard, Frog and lizard in holiday coats, And turtle brave in his golden spots; While cheerful cries from crag and plain Reply to the thunder of river and main. Are there not women who fill our vase with wine and roses to the brim, so that the wine runs over and fills the house with perfume; who inspire us with courtesy; who unloose our tongues, and we speak; who anoint our eyes, and we see? We say things we never thought to have said; for once, our walls of habitual reserve vanished, and left us at large; fwe were children playing with children in a wide field of flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Ralph Waldo Emerson to a Friend: 1838-1853 The letters and fragments of letters here printed are part of the early records of a friendship which, beginning when Emerson was thirty years old, lasted un broken and cordial till his death. In his well-known essay, Emerson has set forth his conception of friendship in what, with no derogatory intention, he called fine lyric words, and his ideal izing genius is nowhere more manifest than in his depicting of it. For its per fection it must be free from the limita tions inevitable in all human relations. It was never to be completely realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson: His Life and Writings That is always best which gives me to myself. The sublime is excited in me by the great Stoical doctrine, Obey thyself.' That which shows God in me fortifies me. That which shows God out of me makes me a wart and a wen. There is no longer a necessary reason for my being. Already the long shadows of untimely oblivion creep over me, and I shall decease for ever. By his holy thoughts Jesus serves us, and thus only.
